Hi,

I've been working on my technique in general for a while now, trying to get all the techniques I use (ap, legato, sweeping) more accurate and cleaner. With that in mind I've been working on a steve vai solo from the end of Answers from the 1996 G3 live CD, as it features a bit of all of those things.

There's a few versions of this solo floating about (recordings from different concerts) but the one I've done is supposed to be the one on the G3 CD, rather than the videos floating around on youtube. The ones on youtube appear to be slightly different versions to on the CD from listening.

I can play it consistently to the standard on that recording, however I think there's a few parts that aren't quite right. The sweeping part at the beginning is probably the worst part, but then I think the whole thing feels just slightly 'rushed', the parts don't seem to gel all that well together to me compared to vai's version, but I suppose that's why he's the master. Also some of the tapping parts are a little ropey, but I'm new to that technique so hopefully it'll improve in time.

Any constructive criticism is muchly appreciated! Unfortunately I can't make videos to show my playing for analysis as I don't have a camera, though I hope to get one soon.

Also, if anyone knows how to do those harmonics he does right at the end that'd sure be a help. I figure he uses a sustainer or something but I can't figure out how to play it.

Cheers,
-Adam

You have very good sound, I'd like to know what you use to record! Despite some mistakes - quite seriously played,congratz. You're very critical of yourself - which is very good. Be persistent, and very fast you'll eliminate the deficiencies that currently you have !

Woa dude, i remember this solo form the live CD, i know it's different to the video ones, i like this one better.

With that said, i can't play like that, you got a very nice technique going on, congratulations, there are some weak parts that i'm sure other instructors can help you with, but you got the skeleton of a very complex piece of music.

Cheers, hopefully yea I'll get it sorted. I just try to play slow and accurate to the metronome and eventually things get better but it's taking a very long time.

To record I'm just using a line6 UX2 and pod farm 2 into reaper. The guitar I'm using there is a black korina strat with gibson '57 pickups. And that's it, there's nothing else in the signal chain. I used to use a tube pre-amp in front of the UX2 but the tubes went recently so I'm just going straight into pod farm 2 now. There's a few other recordings I've done knocking about if you'd like to hear those, there's a thread here;

I could post the patches I use if anyone wants them. I think a good recording sound comes more from your mind than the equipment, though.

Thanks, yea there's some stupidly good players knocking about on this site so it'd be nice to get some help with certain parts!

With that sweeping part, I can't work out how much of it is picked and how much is legato at the top/bottom of the sweep. I think the tapping is just a matter of practice and patience but that sweep I think I might be executing it wrong.
