Sweeping Differently

In my latest lesson, George Bellas Style, https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/George-Bellas-Style/ I include some sweeping ideas that are a bit different to the common 3 string style arpeggios that you often see. Instead of sweeping up, hitting a 2nd note on the top E and coming back down again, I instead play one note on each string only. However, when you change direction you will pick the same note twice.

In some ways, it's perhaps the most pure way of demonstrating how a sweep works because you are sweeping down and then up again with no added notes in between.

I also did a YT video a while back which demonstrates this idea. So, have a look at the lesson.. and the YT video because it's hard to explain with words.

You can expand on that basic up/down sweep approach and start applying it to extended arpeggios across all strings. You can even step up, step back, step up again as I do in the video.

There's more than one way to sweep - enjoy !!

Cool stuff Ben! Sweeping is probably the main reason I started to use thin picks smile.gif I love the extra amount of attack smile.gif

Hah! Amazing explanations and ideas - I've seen Mattias Eklundh use this approach on some 5th based shapes biggrin.gif Good going Ben!

That's interesting... do you feel thinner picks give more attack ? I thought it had the opposite effect ??

Yes...they give extra attack in sense of treble response. I suppose You meant the picking volume which in deed is a bit limited with thin picks but there is a solution for this too smile.gif But when I experiment with both thin and pick thicks I find it different in case of picking method that works for both cases smile.gif I like the tone of pick slipping from one string to another with this specific "shot" sound. smile.gif

It must be said that thin picks are very comfortable to use.. the feel of the picks flopping over the strings is very pleasing smile.gif

But when you are riffing, don't you feel like they are too floppy? smile.gif

Well that's why I use thicker picks but there is no denying that the thinner picks offer less resistance and are very comfortable. Even though they flex more they still seem to catch every note but it just has less attack smile.gif

Great lessons mate and great ideas you've got there.
Being inspired by Greg Howe i love to combine sweep with hybrid picking, pull offs and hammer ons with rhythmic phrases.
It contains the common 3 string style arpeggios in some sections but combining them with the other techniques i think they sound interesting

here is the close up exemple:

and the expemple integrated in the song:

Nice work.. I think arpeggios are great when people approach them differently. There are more ways of playing them than just sweeping up/down smile.gif

Hehe! Finally, Marius greets us with some awesome recordings smile.gif Great lines and concepts mate - as Ben says, from slow to fast, arpeggios can be presented in a lot of moods. Who else has nice arpeggio ideas? biggrin.gif

The same trick can be pulled with a delay pedal and maybe the volume knob for more effect biggrin.gif But it's amazing to see one doing with the guitar only!
