I can see both the downside and upside to this idea. So bear with me.

As I was reading the forums today I had a second window open with the UPLOADS forum active. As I was reading messages I would jump back to the uploads forum and play the various songs people uploaded in the background while I surfed the rest of the GMC message boards.

I think it would be cool to have a GMC "radio" that opened in a separate window that played the various songs people have uploaded to the UPLOADS section. Kind of like a mini Windows Media Player / Winamp window. It would display/scroll the name of the song (you could actually get the name from the message title) and the user who created it. It would have volume control and shuffle control (play randomly or sequential). It wouldn't have to be super fancy. Just a basic player that plays music from our very own students and instructors while reading the various forums. And of course it would have an ON/OFF button.

Anyway just another one of my ideas.

Oooh, this is actually pretty darn cool. There's a lot of stuff on the uploads and member uploads that I really like listening to - there's many that I have to listen to on a regular basis.

If I could have a php file that would return the locations of the mp3's that have been uploaded to the forum, I would even do an MP3 player for the site for it with visualization in Flash!

Here's some sample screenshots of one I've written :

I'll be honest, i'm not so sure about this. I know i may seem like i'm being GMCs biggest critic or something but i'm not trying to be. I don't think there is much need for something like this. When you go onto someones post and listen to their files you're there on the topic, you can post and read comments that way. If you do it your way, you'll have to search through the posts just to make a comment. I don't see an aweful lot of benefit you can save these files to your computer.

I think this is a good idea. Kris and Marcus could add their new songs there that they come up with also. Maybe other instructors will add their songs there too.

I understand the thing about posting comments. The player could have a link that allows you to click it and it would take you directly to the message so you could post a comment.

I thought it would be a nice little add on. What got me thinking about it was my experience I shared in my previous post.

As I was surfing the message board I listened to uploads from Andrew, BotoxFox and Amarok. I enjoyed all, especially Amarok's. It fit our current weather here, my mood at the time I was reading messages and then I thought "How cool would it be to have some type of background music streaming of all the uploads?".

It could also serve another purpose. A recruitment tool for new members. I've noticed that the number of guests really outweighs the number of actual members.

Maybe for the guests we have a different player that cycles maybe 6-10 uploads of our students. This would be more evidence that by signing up at GMC your playing improves dramatically. It would speak for the quality of our GMC community. Guests would hear REAL students making REAL progress.

Ok.. I'm done. LOL smile.gif

Ok seriously? Thats incredible. I'm a lot a bit jealous that I didn't think this up first. ohmy.gif

It would definitely be a lot of work, but I think something like that might just finalize GMC as the coolest website ever.

Kudos to you.

LOL! Too funny!!!

I've had a couple of ideas in the past and have shared them with Kris. Some he implemented (others also expressed some of the ideas) and a couple maybe I shared weren't too great. But I really like this idea. If I had the time I'd volunteer my skills to make it a reality.

I don't think the programming part would be the hard part. The hard part would be the organization of the files that are linked to the posts. Kris and staff may already have the files organized in their own location with reference to the posts. I don't know. And from there it's just a matter of being able to play the upload while at the same time linking to the post so the player would list the upload title (it could take it from the message subject) and also provide a working link to the actual post for commenting, etc.

We could even go a step further and have a ranking/voting system. The listener could click the number of "stars" it wants to give the song (1 through 5) and the overall ranking would also appear in the player window. Maybe on the home page have a TOP 20 STUDENTS RECORDINGS and have them listed in order of most votes. I don't know. Just more stuff to think about.

I agree, this just might work.

This is a hell of a lot better than my GMC personal ads Idea. laugh.gif wink.gif

Actually, the board should have a way to query just the uploaded files, and then you could filter out only the .mp3 ones and for a certain board.

So none of the programming stuff should be that difficult. It would also be nice to get collabs ( chunks with backing and completed ones ) in there too, as those produce some really awesome stuff as well, but I'm not sure it would be easy to separate those out with 100% success rate programmatically.

The voting would be another story, as it would require a new table that doesn't exist - and that would be at the discretion of Kris if he'd want that added to maintain (though it would be easy to put together and script).

Btw, I would definately volunteer to help with this. I can do anything from the PHP to Flash to Database work.

Collabs would be easy - the finished ones are all posted to the collab board (or should be, I think we are a couple behind though).

Yeah, the completed ones should be easy ( though as you said, we'd have to make sure the "complete" thread gets updated, and it is behind last time I checked ). I had been thinking the difficult would be in if you wanted to get each persons "completed" collab item individually, but only grab the one *with* backing track.

Again, I'm totally willing to throw down and donate some programming time to this. I really love the community and very much enjoy the content the members produce. It's also very cool to see the progress people have made over time in the things they've submitted ( whether it be with technique, mixing, whatever ).

My thought is: WOW! biggrin.gif

We have had some ideas about a gmc radio - but we have never come this far in the planning.

We will add this to our future wish-list with a link to this thread.

Actually, the first time Kristofer and me ever met in person, we talked about a "radio" feature for GMC smile.gif

But as Kris says, it was nowhere near this far in planning, and it was mainly loose ideas that it would be cool. This, however, is very doable and would be awesome!
