GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Funtwo.. Why?

Posted by: Jesse Jan 18 2009, 06:02 PM

Hes good, I reckon but why the deuce is he so famous? I mean, Jerry C composed it, and there are so many better players.... I bet he just got lucky.

Posted by: The Uncreator Jan 18 2009, 07:16 PM

True.

Plus I think Jerry C plays it better, it has more feeling. Funtwo is just that, Lucky, Nothing else.

Well, you gotta grab a moment, and on YT the most annoying clip can become the most popular one. Also, a great idea, can turn up great, and popular as well. There are no strict rules I guess wink.gif

OK...

I have a theory, Which I've wondered about for the longest time.

Well, when you go to Google and type "Guitar" Guess what shows up in the results? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Guitar&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

Thats right Funtwo's Famous clip.

Same thing with Youtube. Out of Millions of Videos of guitars, Funtwo gets put right at number 1. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Guitar&search_type=&aq=f

And, I've Got to imagine the word "Guitar" gets typed into google and youtube, at least 100,000+(probably even alot more than that) times a day from People All over the world.

And most of the people who search "Guitar" will see the video clip, and click.

And for alot of people who don't know much about guitars or are beginners they will see Funtwo and think he is like a "Guitar God".

Not to take anything away from funtwo, he's definitely a very skilled player,

But I always like JerryC version alot better as well.

So to answer the original question, I think part of the reason he's so popular (and has over 54 million views) Has got to be getting put at the top of the search results.

i completely agree, i posted that comment on his video and i got like 1000 thumbs down

Slammers theory seems about right tongue.gif

It's also a bit about luck, as you said... I guess it could happen to anybody playing a guitar on youtube, and it happened to him wink.gif

I am pretty sure he is on top *because* of the millions of views, not the other way around. So I really don't think that is the reason.

JerryC was big too with his clip before funtwo. I think funtwo got all the attention because he looked like a little kid who could cover the then famous Canon Rock. And it was a very early Cover too which meant a lot of attention.

Posted by: Pavlov Jan 19 2009, 09:37 AM

Yeah, I never understood either. JerryC gets comperatively way less credit for an at least equal job, not to mention composing.

Posted by: Jesse Jan 19 2009, 10:28 AM

Ah, glad im not alone in this case:D

I remember when YT was a reasonably new site, Funtwo's video was one of the first guitar videos I saw there. Maybe he just beat everybody else to it.

Posted by: Oxac Jan 19 2009, 10:16 PM

I've watched some JerryC videos and I can't say anything else than that he's very sloppy.

Posted by: slash48 Jan 22 2009, 02:22 AM

Yeah, I don't think it's fair either. If you look on youtube they have this youtube live thing where funtwo got to play with joe satriani. Jerry C should be the one up there!

Posted by: Mandos Jan 22 2009, 08:02 AM

Indeed and the guitar FunTwo uses is probably the ugliest guitar known to man.

that is exactly it

this was one of the first people to become famous through youtube, and he opened the door to a lot of people...it isnt because he is goood, but he is, its because people werent used to seeing good guitar players....now its impossible to become as famous because there are millions of guitar players trying to show off their videos

Posted by: fatb0t Jan 23 2009, 03:54 PM

I watched him play with Satch and he sucked badly. He could play but he sounded like a good hobbyist, not a professional like Satch.

Posted by: slash48 Jan 29 2009, 02:42 AM

yeah,he was very shaky with Satch. I heard him mess up on numerous occasions.

Posted by: Sircraigery Jan 31 2009, 03:48 AM

Man, this is exactly what I hate about other guitar players... everyone trashing someone else's skills. He's better than me by a long shot, and even if he wasn't who cares. Kurt Cobain probably couldn't run a scale as fast as me, but I still believe he was a better player than I'll ever be.

Live and let live, he's just a dude who plays guitar.

Take it easy man ^^ Of course we rip on people who get to play with legends and don't show their best!

Posted by: Sircraigery Feb 7 2009, 05:09 AM

Yeah man, but if I was playing with those legends I'd be so nervous I'd probably screw up a power chord.

On stage will cut your skills in half. Keep in mind, he went from recording himself with a crappy webcam to playing on live tv. I'd be frozen solid.

Posted by: SonofDestiny Feb 7 2009, 09:43 AM

Haha yeah I'd probably piss myself from fear.

Posted by: Jesse Feb 7 2009, 10:16 AM

Lol, he played alot live in between dude.
