Hey GMC! I am currently transposing a piano piece to guitar and am confused about a symbol being used.

Wut does the C mean?

Hi, the C at the beginning of the line means that the time signature is 4/4.
Cheers

I think you are right Muris, I did not heard of any other time signature that has letter symbol as well. C is for 4/4 only.

@Muris and Ivan,

hi, i'm not really sure about it, but i heard that the C with a line across (vertically) mean its 2/2.
but anyway thats a very rare (and probably boring) time signature to use. wink.gif

Cut time. I think without the line is common time 4/4

Yes quite right all, the C is common time i.e. 4/4 and C with a line thru it is cut time.

Yes indeed, I just remembered that one as well from old music books. Haven't seen that in a while so couldn't remember at first. C with a vertical line means 2/2

Yes, it indicates a 4/4. It comes from a tradition in musical notation, when the measure was not indicated by numbers.
There is a good book about ancient music notation from The medieval academy of America.
I hope it was usefull.

Found the book!! It's a royal schools of music theory book circa 1958.....
It does stand for 4/4. The book continues to say....
"C is not a capital letter for Common time. In early days music in 3 time was represented by O,
the circle or symbol of perfection; music in 2 or 4 time by C, the imperfect or incomplete circle.
2/2 time is called Alla Breve and is shown by the sign C with the line through"
Hope that helps out.

Agreed !! C means 4/4 and C with bar means 2/2, I see it some times in country music where tempo was to fast to count 1,2,3,4. wink.gif It's not weird in country, believe me wink.gif
