GMC Forum _ Collaborations _ Cliffs Of Dover Cover Video-collaberation Signup Thread!

Posted by: Praetorian Nov 22 2008, 08:04 PM

Ok guys, let's get this thing underway! This is going to be a video collaberation of our talented members doing a cover of Cliffs of Dover! I have been speaking to Ivan about how to undertake this, and we decided that we would break the song up into 20 or 30 second sections and assign that time frame to participants so they can learn that one section. Once all the videos are collected, I'll splice them together and we'll have the complete song! So, since this is different than a usual collaberation, and the fact that the song is only 4 minutes long...we will only be able to have 8 or 9 people depending on how long the sections are. But, I think that it will be really fun for those who are able to play this very difficult song! So...who can play this thing...and who wants in?! We'll give it two weeks for the video upload deadline. This thread is just for signups...and then when we have 8 people we will decide who wants to play which part and go from there!

p.s. Here is the backing track. The first 30 seconds or so are silent, as that is when EJ is cranking out that crazy intro solo...who is brave enough to take on THAT part?! tongue.gif

I'll take the intro, might take me a while to nail it though, when is the deadline?

Is it too late for me to join?

How about two weeks? Is that enough time? That will make the deadline for video uploading December 06!

Absolutely not...plenty of time! If you have the skills for this one, go for it!

Posted by: ParalyzedHorse Nov 22 2008, 09:28 PM

Cool, so how are the parts going to be divided?

When we have all the people that want to get involved, I'll break the song up into parts closest to 30 seconds that flow properly. Then, if people have a preference, they can request a certain section!

Sounds good!

Sign me in mate. I wanted to improvise as I wrote you on PM, but I will learn my part as everyone else.

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Nov 23 2008, 01:44 PM

I want to do it but I don't know if I'm capable as I have never tried the track. I love the song. Are there any easy sections?

I didn't try to play it yet, but from listening I think probably easiest part is first verse.

Intro scares me, tongue.gif and the rest of the song seems to be on progressive difficulty compared to the first verse.

By the way. To make things easier, specially in the mix, we should probably use the same reference and talk in terms of bars.

I think this is pretty much perfect tab
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/e/eric_johnson/cliffs_of_dover_ver2_guitar_pro.htm

So, the section I want to do is bars 37 to 61.

Gus, can you send me that tab version in email or message? Everytime I go to Ultimate Guitar website, I get bombarded with popups and I can never get to the tab itself!

Ok...so now we have:

Tjchep
ParalyzedHorse
ErikEklund
Gus
Ivan
and possibly OrganizedConfusion

Almost full!

I wanted to get involved as well...but after trying to get some sections down last night, I had to come to the conclusion that I am definitely NOT ready to tackle this collab! So, I'll stay on the organization side of it! tongue.gif

Maybe try the 30 seconds right after Gus's requested part. That seems to be the easiest section. I tried it last night, and it was still too hard for me though! Listen to the Youtube studio version that Gus posted and see what you think!

Yeah please can I take the bit from 1.25 to 1.53 ish if possible

Could I have bars 56 to 76. I think that makes more sense than Gus going on to 61 as 56 is a great part for a new section.

Ok, here is the official list as of now...

Tjchep
ParalyzedHorse
ErikEklund
Gus
Ivan
OrganizedConfusion

I think two more and we should be all set!

Oops...that's what I get for copy and pasting! tongue.gif HERE is the correct list:

Tjchep
bladezerok
kjutte
ParalyzedHorse
ErikEklund
Gus
OrganizedConfusion
Ivan Milenkovic

I think that should do it! Tomorrow I will start working on sections of the song to assign. Tjchep has requested the intro (brave man!) and Ivan wants the end. Gus wants bars 37 to 61 and OrganizedConfusion requests the section after that. I will check out which bars tomorrow!

Me and Gus sorted it between ourselves that he would have 37 to 56 and I'll do 56 to 76 smile.gif

Posted by: Praetorian Nov 26 2008, 07:54 PM

Ok guys...here is the assignment list! These are the bars you will be reponsible for playing. I tried to give everyone fairly equal time, and tried to follow requests for certain sections. These are the bars as they appear in the Guitar Pro file that is attached in this thread.

Tjchep - 1-22
bladezerok - 23-36
Gus - 37-56
OrganizedConfusion - 57-76
ErikEklund - 77-100
ParalyzedHorse - 101-116
Kjutte - 117-154
Ivan Milenkovic - 155 to end.

Kjutte has a larger part since he requested a more difficult section. Ivan is improvising his part, so it is up to him how many bars he plays. What do you guys think? Any problems, let me know and we will try to straighten them out!

We have a tentative deadline of December 6th. If you need more time to upload your video that is not a problem! Just aim for around that date and I will get to editing it all together! Good luck guys! I know you can do it, and I can't wait to see the finished product!!!!!

Here is the Guitar Pro file!

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Nov 27 2008, 03:29 PM

There is a backing posted I believe. And I'm fine but can I start on bar 56 rather than 57 as if you look at tab and listen to song it is more of a natural start for a new guitarist smile.gif It's up to Gus also though.

Yep. it's more natural indeed. I will go until 55 then.

And actually on bar 37, it is more natural if bladezerok play the power chord and I start after the pause.

What tempo is the backing at? It seems quicker than the actual song also. I can play along with the song but this might be tricky to get a good take at this speed but I will give it a go smile.gif

May I start on 122? It just feels natural to me.
Someone object if they think otherwise, I don't mind at all. smile.gif

Edit:
Where exactly is this in the backing by the way? and exactly where should it end? :S

The easiest would probably be to finalize one step at the time, and send that end product to the next one in line. Would make it alot easier!

No problem! I can edit the start of your video so that it blends nicely with the section before you!

Great job by the way!

How's it coming guys?

Posted by: ParalyzedHorse Dec 15 2008, 05:44 AM

Hey sorry for the delay, I've been having really bad luck. I sprained my left arm about a week ago, and I'm still having trouble bending it...I've also been sick the last few days. But I'm gonna have it up in the next couple of days, dont worry!

Posted by: Pedja Simovic Dec 15 2008, 10:20 AM

Some cool playing so far guys - very excited about final mix smile.gif

I kind of need a xx.xx to xx.xx of the solo
Does anyone have the exact digits for that on this backing?

kjutte - Don't worry about playing too much of it...I can edit where your video comes in and stop depending on what the guys before and after you play. It is better to play a little more than your assignment anyway to help with editing.

We have to get these videos in guys! I still only have three!

Here's my take Prae, sorry for the delay mate, I was a bit busy. I hope it's OK, it's a bit unstructured.

 Ivan_Video.avi ( 5.89MB ) : 81
 Ivan_With_Backing_Audio.mp3 ( 429.92K ) : 90
 Ivan_Without_Backing_Audio.mp3 ( 429.92K ) : 93

Are we using a backing or is someone covering the rhythm?

The backing that is included in the beginning of this thread.

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Dec 18 2008, 11:56 PM

Hey Prae mate, I forgot to tell you to blend in my take anywhere you feel it should go in. I didn't know exactly where to start playing so I jammed a bit. I hope I will not create too much trouble for you in the video editing process. Thanks! smile.gif

Posted by: Praetorian Dec 21 2008, 03:07 PM

Hey guys,

If you haven't submitted your video, PLEASE DO SO!!!!!! I have 4 videos from Ivan, OC, Erik and bladezerok. The rest still need to be put up so we can finish and release this thing! The videos I already have are great and it would be a shame for there to be sections missing!

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Dec 21 2008, 03:45 PM

I suggest PMing every participant in order to hurry up the finalization of the collab. When Christmas arrives, hardly anyone will record anything anymore :?

Posted by: ParalyzedHorse Dec 22 2008, 05:17 AM

Heres mine! sorry for taking forever...sprained my left arm!

Posted by: Praetorian Dec 22 2008, 05:25 AM

Nice tone! Hope your arm is ok!!!

Posted by: ParalyzedHorse Dec 22 2008, 05:28 AM

Thanks man, the tone is just the cliffs of dover preset on the pod lol

edit: Nice playing Ivan, amazing!

Posted by: Zynex Dec 22 2008, 09:59 AM

Hey guys, room for one more? I think I could give it a shot. Im intermediate, so a not TOO fast part woukld be nice

Posted by: kjutte Dec 22 2008, 10:54 AM

Thing is that the tempo changes during the solo. I'll do some research.

Posted by: kjutte Dec 22 2008, 11:15 AM

Seems it's 2.51-2.31 for my part.

Possibly Zynex...some of the original participants haven't submitted a video yet. If they don't, you could take their spot! I will let you know!

Posted by: kjutte Dec 22 2008, 02:03 PM

Here's my take.
I improvised it though, I hope that's ok.

It kind of sucks, I need more time with the backing.
Use this version if I don't get time to update it though...

Best of luck to the rest of you!

Edit:
I made a second take, lol.
Choose the one you like the most Pred, they both suck. tongue.gif

Maybe something similar mate, I improvised on this one, and it was one of the first takes so I didn't memorize it properly.

I cannot wait for this!I want the video already!! cool.gif wink.gif

Posted by: Dreamcatcher Jan 5 2009, 05:21 PM

I have never done any video collab and not sure how to go about any part of it ...however i just finished learning the entire tune your working on...so if there is something you would like me to throw together i will try my best to understand how you want it done and get it to ya asap smile.gif

Posted by: Vaialation1232 Jan 6 2009, 01:51 AM

Hey, Gus has given me the OK to take his part (1st chorus)...never done one of these...is it okay if i just do with the backing track cause i use a webcam...so it is hard to do it without the backing track and get the timing right

Posted by: Praetorian Jan 6 2009, 02:00 AM

Great! We have actually had a bunch of different guys step up to take these spots over! The more the merrier!!! What I will do is, all the guys that submit their takes at the end, will be included in the collaberation. I will put together a collection of videos of everyone that submitted their video at the end of the collab so nobody is left out!

Heres my take, with and without backing....sorry for sound and mistakes (threw it together today)...tried to do it ASAP though, thanks!

Ah, I see vaialation has got his take first after signing up today...

I had to study for an exam yesterday and I had to write it today dry.gif which only left me this afternoon for practicing and recordin. At last I'm finished [brushes the sweat off his face] ohmy.gif
Anyway I'll let Praetorian to decide which one fits in better (the B&W style is pure coincidence...).

Oh, and I managed to do mine in avi, if that makes it easier smile.gif Thanks again for the opportunity Prae (may I call you Ben?) biggrin.gif

I would prefer to be called Ben! I plan to include everyone who submits a video. If it is longer than the original, that's fine!
