GMC Forum _ Student Instructor Lessons _ Bump the Bop Lesson

Posted by: puxler140 Feb 13 2007, 12:38 PM

Hi my name is Paul Rotton
this is my first post. I am from St. Louis Missouri USA
I like bebop, blues and jazz.
I am around 44 yrs of age
and have been playing for many years altough for the last
2 years I have gotten more serious about playing.

Bump the Bop is a shuffle style blues done with a bop feel
as far as the melody is concerned. It is an 12 bar form
In the key of A Blues (D Major)

You will learn a chord melody (padding)
chord substitutions and variations.
The progression is a little different than a straight I, IV, V
in that it turns around at the Vii Chord to the IV

The riffs are in the A blues scale, the A mixolydian
and the chromatic scale.

This original piece seems simple because
the melody is very lyrical
however it may give you a challenge I hope.

The tabs are incorporated with the videos

Sincerely, Paul Rotton

in the next post I will cover the chords

Here is the chord sequence to Bump the Bop.

Substituting dominant chords for one another ( A11 for A7 and so on) is a way to create a chord melody and also a way to make a rhythm more interesting.

Here is the actual 12 bar progression: the / / are the bars
the chords in the ( ) are the basic chords and are not played.
They are for reference and help illustrate the substitute chords.

Here are the riffs to Bump The Bop.
(Use slides, bends, hammer ons, and pulloffs and vibrato as you like- make the piece yours)

Remember to use the A mixolydian scale against the A dominant chords, it may clash if used against other name chords for instance when playing D9 use the D mixolydian scale: E9 use E mixolydian: Bmin7
use B the dorian scale. You can use the A blues scale over the entire progession or use D blues scale against the D dominant chords and so on.

D|-----7----------------------------------------------------7-----7-------------|
A|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---|

Riff 12 is based on an augumented chord form (a chordal motif) an augmented chord is based on a whole tone scale. The scale doesn't have any half steps.
 riff_12.avi ( 3.57MB ) : 271

riff 12
e|--------------------------------4-------4-------4------4---5-----6-----5----------|
B|---------------------5------5-------5-------5-------5---------------------------|
G|------------5-----5-----5-----------------------------------------------------|
D|---------6-----6-------------------------------------------------------------|
A|------7---------------------------------------------------------------------|
E|----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---|

Other scales you could use against or over this progression are the diminished (half whole scale).
The augumented scale and the major and minor pentatonic scales. The root name of the scale you use
should correspond to the root name of the chord being played, ex. A half whole scale with A9 chord.
More on this in another lesson.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOw

we got ourself a jazz man. well done my friend liked it vey much

i think you should just wirte the tabs in notepad

go to the Teach On-line $ tag and over there there is a sample for you to take with empty tabs . i think it will be easier

I just had a biref look and it looks interesting. I can emmediately tell that you need to make the videos larger , size 3-5 mb each. In case you "uploading quota" reaches maximum - we can increase it with more megabytes, so no worries. smile.gif

Also would it is possible some people will have problems with the ".mov" format - let 's see what reactions we get!

Hey Paul,
First of all welcome and a big thanks for stepping up to the mic and creating the lesson.

Its great to see yet another potential instructor and yet another completely different style. Big big hand to you fella. I Loved the lesson, and I would love to be able to master that - it seems to have a lot of blues/jazz elements that can be used all over the place, I am sure there is lots to learn from it.

Kris has already mentioned the video size. It really is an issue, I only watched about 6 video's so far but they are pretty small, some like postage stamp size which would put me off watching them.

I think the Ideal size vid is as in Rockwouldbe's lessons, If you could get video of similar quality that would be great. I personally dont like quicktime but maybe its just me.
Once we get past the video issue though, I thought the lesson was pretty clear and has great potential to be really really really interesting.
I also think its helpfull when an instructor speaks sometimes - perhaps to explain fingerings and how they overcame any difficulties they had in learning a passage?

I agree with Rockwould be about the tabs being in notepad - that way you can have the tab open as you play to the video and of course makes it printable. Very important to students to have lots of paper to carry around.

I have already said it - thanks but there you go again.

I think with just some presentational technical improvements outside of guitar playing, you have the makings of some really popular lessons.

Hi, I second Fretdancer's comments about the video size, and would also add that I found the sound a little lo quality as well, but I really digged the lesson, its great to have a more jazzy direction - an area I have always been interested in.

Thanks very much!

Thanks for the positive feed back.
I've up sized the videos and reworked the tabs
I've also included a good quality music.avi

I can make the videos avi's and a little bit bigger size if you think it would better the lesson?

I'm still working on this lesson
I need to get an Mp3 converter among other issues.

Hey Paul, smile.gif

I agree with what's been said - also avi is a good idea!

Another thought - since you are the first jazzy instructor here - why not take it from the very beggining just explaining a few chords and standard jazz progression (you could use this tune).

Also, try and follow the example lesson's layout with lots of text and tab between each video. I think it would be more easy to understand!

Glad to have you here ! smile.gif

Kris, I'm having problems with avi's on my end.
I can't get a quality avi that is a small file say around 10 megs;
mine are triple that. If you can recommend a compression method
I'm all ears.

I have added explanations, a new main file, chord and riff notation
etc.

Thanks for your patience I'll get it right soon enough.

did you right this? i don't know if its my lack of jazz knowledge or not but my parents are damn into jazz and constently playing it and it could just be a common jazz riff but i recognize a tonnnnnnn of this from my parents music.

Some of the riffs are my take on some common cliches. others are all me. thats the way
jazz and blues is. common words in a language!

Hey Paul,

I jave had a brief look again and it seems the notes are doubled in a strange way - I suspect this might be because of latency...make sure to mute the channel you are recording onto.

Furthermore, the tabs make it really messy - you need to have them in text beside the video if people are going to use this material.

You need to fix all these issues and really work on the layout (do it exactly the same way as in the http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=2681):

Learning the first jazz licks and chords will probably be hard for people even with a perfect layout - as this lesson looks now I think it's nearly impossible...

Posted by: MickeM Feb 19 2007, 02:13 PM

I had a latency in the main.mov - the sound was up to 1 second delayed blink.gif

I'd also like to see some more up to speed Jazz stuff, some crazy riffing please.

Paul, you were looking for a mp3 encoder I use http://www.mthreedev.com/.

i like this im not into jazz but it has a nice sound to it

nice sound for jazzy

About this:

D13
e|--------------7-------------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------5-------------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------5-------------------------------------------------------------|
D|--------------4-------------------------------------------------------------|
A|--------------5-------------------------------------------------------------|
E|--------------x-------------------------------------------------------------|

I like this chord, I didn't know it can be used as 13. You can play melodic minor over this, maybe even dim scale, though I recommend melodicm.

Great chord sequence, it is tough to play over this mate.

Cool lesson!
