I'm always interested in knowing what I'm doing but theory confuses me.

What do you think of this for the price? Just to slowly work through on my tablet when not practising.

It's on 75% discount and is a structured college level course.

Hmmm, I watched some of the preview videos here https://www.udemy.com/course/music-theory-complete/ it kinda put me off, it doesn't seem very dynamic the way its introduced sad.gif

Definitely not "college" level.
You can most of that from the 'Music Theory for Dummies' book.

Cheers Ken

I have that book somewhere, I was a bit of a pillock when I bought it many moons ago, I read it from cover to cover and still knew nothing laugh.gif laugh.gif

Didn't take time to absorb it, I'll dig it out again and work through it slowly over many months wink.gif

I checked some previews, seems it takes things really slow and very casual. Some like to learn more formal while others absorb in such a way easier.

A good private tutor can shape his teaching method depending on the student, with video/book learning this is up to the student. I wouldn't look for the fun/dynamic factor, theory to me was interesting to explore (at times boring too to be honest but I was young...) but I never found the learning process fun or dynamic.

Cheers Mertay,

I find it very interesting but hard to remember. I don't want to get super advanced just understand a bit more than fundamentals. I'm not sure if it's much help though. It would be nice to find a game app, that's a good way to learn.

Cheers

I think we just saw another example of what a little bit of theory can do:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...view=getnewpost

So I would say for €20 you can't really go wrong - even if you just learn one thing from it that is useful to you.

Thanks Kris,

To be honest I've just been looking at that bundle Poster Boy mentioned above, (thanks PB wink.gif)

Looks good I'm just worried about fitting it all in. I've been neglecting my work with Gab of late because I've been working hard in Quick Licks. I really struggle to have the will power to spread my time, what I mean is, I get focused on one thing and struggle to spend just twenty minutes on it, I get engrossed and before I know it, my practise time is up.

Cheers

This might be what I need, I haven't looked at it in depth yet, I can't find my Dummies book. I need it to be guitar based as I don't want to be converting from keyboard /piano to fretboard purely from a time perspective.

You know something, I've been looking at a lot of theory related stuff and I find it overwhelming and I think I know why.

We learn open chords, a few barre chords, the major scale, the minor scale, the minor pentatonic and the major pentatonic and possible the blues scale, we then maybe learn some songs or maybe learn simplified versions of some songs.

In all the years I've been dabbling with guitar I've never seen any applied theory course so to speak. I mean something like learning the basic version of Obladi Oblada and then an explanation of which chords were used and why. I don't even know which chords to play in the key of C major, I think a i iv v would be C F G but I wouldn't know which "should" be major or minor. I did ask both of my guitar tutors years ago, one didn't have a clue and the other blew my brains with a theory overload (He came runner up to Guthrie Govan in the Guitarist Of The Year competition the year that Guthrie won it and went on to win the following year, great great guitarist).

I can't really explain what I think I want, but I don't think just reading theory will work for me, I need to learn some music, then have a basic theory principle behind it explained and do this over and over with simple songs until I can get it. I know it gets way more advanced but just being able to work out, even if quickly on a piece of paper, which chords to play for a given key would be great.

My friend is thinking of starting a guitar club at his shop one evening a week having jams and workshops etc, he knows I've been a student for a long time and I'm a little embarrassed to say I don't know what chords to play. I know he would tell me and wouldn't belittle me but it would be nice to know, or at least be able to work out, which chords to play, I don't want to just wing it with power chords rolleyes.gif

Cheers

Theory explains the "what" but I think you're looking for "why".

Like; with theory you can understand how many chords can optionally fit to a specific note of a melody. But if you ask "why that chord instead of that" theory won't help you, this is where harmony can explain things.

You may be spot on there buddy. One of my bad traits is having to understand things. My friend was once showing me how to play a song and he said "then it's an A7 chord". I said "why is it called A7, what does the 7 mean?" and he said, "it's just the name of the chord" I SERIOUSLY couldn't accept that.

Cheers Mertay, maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing.

I think guitar club is a GREAT idea. Being able to interact live and ask questions is a great way to learn!!! Please do take some phone vid of it if you can and share your progress here on GMC!
