GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Muting Strings

Posted by: Blister Jan 12 2013, 07:48 PM

Steve Howe is leaving Asia to return to Yes & his trio work. His replacement is Sam Coulson. No disrespect intended, but Sam sounds like he could be from the movie Spinal Tap (which I love! biggrin.gif ). Apparently Paul Gilbert caught notice of him & here is the video. What I found interesting was his comment that by practicing on a 10 watt solid state amp, help him perfect his technique of muting & controlling the strings. This vid is obviously prior to getting found by Asia.

It is amazing the power of youtube & helping to open doors for artists that may have never gotten noticed!

I probably should have mentioned what I'm talking about starts at 4:50 where he has Paul strumming the strings at the first fret while Sam is playing. He has amazing control over muting all strings except what he is playing. I have a hard time muting strings on simple bends so I was real impressed by his technique.

Knew this guitarist would be good if he got Paul Gilbert's attention. Really impressive technique and reminders about muting and vibrato. yeah, the accent is very Nigel-esque. biggrin.gif
