GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Let's Learn Muris's Lydian Intermediate!

Posted by: lcsdds Mar 13 2009, 04:20 PM

Hi Guys,
So I think a lot of you guys have been following my MTP thread and have been hearing me harp on my group to use the Kaz-box aka the metronome. Some of my mentorees and I are going to be starting the Intermediate lesson in Muris's Lydian Phrasing serial and we have noticed that the timing in this bad boy is pretty tricky.

I thought it might be helpful to make a series of videos breaking down this lesson bar by bar and going over exactly how to phrase each bar with the metronome. That way if you get to a bar and you are having trouble with it.....you have an easy soloution to be able slow it down and work it up to speed. You can't do this if you don't know how to count it using the Kaz-box.

I PM'd Andrew and asked him if it would be OK for me to do this and he said it was sooooo.......I'll be posting the videos in this first post....breaking down each bar and demonstrating how to play it with the metronome. A lot of tricky yet cool rhythms in this one.

Anybody who is interested go ahead and download the tab and keep checking back and we'll break down this cool lesson from the Bosnian Beast!!! smile.gif

EDIT: For anybody wanting to follow along....If you would check out Kris's great lesson on the metronome and the different note values it will help you understand what I am talking about in the videos.

First little intro video is up guys. I will post bars 1-2 and bars 3-4 as two separate videos. Let me know if you have any questions of if there is anything I could do to make the next videos any better. Thanks.

This is a great idea Monte so thumbs up bro!!

I think myself and a lot of member here at GMC will finds this very useful.

As you know Muris "The Bosnian Monster" has asked me to play this also, so he must not like me or something. laugh.gif biggrin.gif Not sure what I did to anger the man but it may please him if I could play this. smile.gif

So, I would like to watch this thread and work on this solo if it is OK with you and everyone else.

You da man Monte cool.gif

Nice idea!

The effort is appreciated. This should be very helpful.

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 14 2009, 06:04 AM

Videos are great but can you sit up or turn the recording input up some. The guitar I can hear but you words fall to the back and I would like to have that louder.

Thanks bro!

Thanks bro!

I'm 6'6" so it is hard to position myself so I fit in the camera!! tongue.gif laugh.gif I noticed the low volume after I made it. I think the next video is better.....and I'll turn up the input and speak louder for the next video. Sorry for the low volume.....still working out the bugs obviously!! smile.gif

Posted by: UncleSkillet Mar 14 2009, 06:17 AM

No big problems mate.

Everything so far is great! I'm just picky biggrin.gif

I just wanted your words to be louder.

Posted by: lcsdds Mar 14 2009, 06:29 AM

I'll be uploading bars 3 and 4 shortly and then I'm going out of town tomorrow so I won't put up any more videos until Monday. Probably get through bar 9 by then. If there is something that needs clarification or that I didn't do a very good job of explaining in these videos let me know and I'll address it in the subsequent videos. Hope these are helping somebody. smile.gif

Hi Guys....Anybody who is following along could you please go up to the first post and download the GP file for this lesson. I have made some notations on it that I think will help. Then next few bars are kind of tricky to count and get to sound right with the drum beat. They look simple on the tab but there are a few things that are easy to overlook that make it sound very cool and also add to the difficulty of counting these.

I'll probably have the next two phrases up by Wed.

Posted by: opeth.db Mar 17 2009, 01:01 PM

Worked with this last night Monte. Im really starting to see the benefits counting and following along how you tabbed this out in GP.

I was getting lost before with the backing tracks but now I can pretty easily follow along now with just a generic drum beat or metronome.

Its all I worked on last night but its getting cool now. smile.gif

Cool Dan...I should have a couple of vids up today explaining the notations I made on the tab. starting at bar 7 the timing gets pretty tricky. smile.gif

I am at that part now learning it. Its definately going to be a chore to get those runs up to speed. dry.gif

Posted by: lcsdds Mar 17 2009, 06:14 PM

I just got a program that will allow me to record my computer screen along with me explaining it. I am just going to make a movie explaining the tab and the different musical notations so you guys can see exactly what I am looking at on my computer screen. Should make everything much clearer.

Thanks for the suggestion Dan....and the link to the program. smile.gif

I added another video that I think explains the GP file better. Gotta watch it in full screen mode. Let me know if this helps. smile.gif

Thanks for this Monte. I will be checking it out soon. smile.gif

I'm trying to figure out how to upload the original file of the video where I explain the GP file for the lesson. It doesn't seem to want to upload. It is about 113MB. Any ideas? Youtube killed the quality....A LOT!!

Couldn't you make a torrent file...I'm not sure how that work's and if you need somewhere to host it. I guess you would for a file that size.

Going to start this lesson in the next few days. I really need to get serious about learning to count music and understand it. I've been playing for years and understand the very basics, but like many lazy hobby musicians, you just play by feel.

Hope you continue with this. I'm finally going work on learning this.

I am going to continue with this. I am going to finish it up this week. I took this last week to get it under my fingers and make a video of me playing it. I am comfortable enough with the licks now to finish it up. I'm gonna shorten up the video of me going over the tab on my computer so I can put it on yousendit.com.

Stay tuned....

Finally started. Memorizing the lesson now...I just have to stay disciplined and learn to count it out. With you walking us through the lesson, I have no excuse not to do it now.

No more lazy playing. rolleyes.gif We'll see.

I'm sure I'll be bugging you with questions soon.

This lesson seems a bit too tricky for me, but I admire your initiative ! Very well explained ! biggrin.gif Hopefully I'll be able to play this soon as well... smile.gif

I hope I can finish this soon...all though I don't know how many people are actually working on this lesson. laugh.gif I have a nasty cold right now and sound pretty bad. Nobody wants to see me wiping my nose in a video. laugh.gif Hopefully I'll be better in a few days. biggrin.gif

Hooked up with Muris in the chat last week and we talked about this lesson. He gave me the go ahead!
I started working on it Sunday and have almost half of it done. I can't wait for the other uploads you are going to do!

It's very cool that you are taking the time to put this together for everyone! This is a great explanation of how to learn a lesson like this. It looks easier to play than it is! There are a lot of interesting things to learn and hear. biggrin.gif It’s a awesome lesson if you want to work on timing to.

Cheers bro and hope you feel better soon. smile.gif

Feel better. Look forward to seeing the lesson completed.

Thanks for the hard work.

Memorized the lesson. Lick seven(I think), the triplet hammer on to sixteenth notes section, is taking some work.
I'm getting it though.

I have a couple timing or counting questions to hit you with soon.

Of course I'll let you both know. Great playing and lesson Muris. With both of your efforts, this is one of the most helpful lessons. smile.gif

When I get section seven a little better, I'll work on the counting details. Talk to you soon.

Been working on this when I can. It's pretty straight forward when you actually take the time and read how to count it out like you wrote it. laugh.gif Discipline, discipline.

Now I realize that the 7 lick is actually 16th note triplets into 32 notes and not 8th triplets to 16th notes. I learned that from the Muris "Timing Exercise" lesson. Well, I realized that again when I stopped being lazy.

Thanks again for the effort. I'm starting to get it. Almost have the lesson up to speed in the quick parts.
