Up And Down Strumming :(

Hello everyone im new on gmc and i love it! Im learning basics but i cant play a full song yet in normal tuning(i have a tuner for all tunings) I really dont understand up and down strumming like where to do it up up and where to do it down down for example Smells like teen spirit from nirvana intro:
This is how i play it:

B --
G -- 1 (down and then up)
D --1 (down,up,down) X(down 3 times then up) 3
A --3 X 3
E --3 X

G 4(down and then up)
D --4(down and then up) X(3 times down then up) 6
A --6 X 6
E --6 X

I really suck when i change chords lol ...and all the time i play extra string which i dont need to .

Hello gmc First of all! GREAT SITE <3<3!
My name Danny .Im 15 from Norway. I have been playing guitar for months but i really really really suck but i joined gmc few days ago and im learning alot! soo many things to do and practice. Its good that kris says that it can take months or weeks to learn because thats true. I heard about GMC on ultimate guitar. The only thing im finding very very difficult right now is that when to strum down and when to strum up :S for example nirvana-smells like teen spirit and i suck changing string and other stuff but im learning alot from GMC which i didnt learned in months! Im gona try my best and learn everything i can from GMC ! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!
