Feel free to record more takes if you want, and then we can choose the one you like the most.
Also it would be cool if you played after 4 clicks in as I might need to put you as the first one when you have pickup melody.
Hope that makes sense man - thanks

Thanks man,
I recorded it this morning 'cause I knew I would be very busy after that and in the next few days and I really wanted to participate.
I'll try to make another take starting after the count in though.

Pedja, buddy, that is great. I am not sure my solo will sound any near that... But I think in time with a lot of experience maybe I will be able to write fusion solos half good as this
Everything's great. And also I loved your tone it has a great low end, possibly thanks to a jazz body guitar, and got crazy with the little harmonic minor touch on the third measure before the descending arpeggio.
Wow
Outstanding middle solo, and the G7sus4 to G#dim7 part was also accompagned with an apogee of feelings
And the finishing melody was so great and all this in an improvisation, you are not an instructor for nothing buddy

I won't comment my take, I will leave that for all of you guys to say what you like or don't like about it.
I can however comment in terms of approach I used, what scale and arpeggio I applied, what was my phrasing there about etc. That can help in your future solos

For 7 months of playing this is great man !
Chord progression is not in one key which makes it very hard for improvising , even for people who play for years.
I will comment on your take when final mix is done.

QUOTE (berko @ Jan 18 2009, 11:20 PM)
Now this aint fair! When I first checked for new uploads there was David here who did his in only a few hours. I really got intimidated
When I wanted to bring my first solo (which was actually a clean solo): there came Pedja, Chris and enforcer and then I was like packing everything back into my sack.
Now here I come, this is my third solo on this BT and I won't escape this time
So, Pedja, my concept was quite simple: stick to the scales derived from the backing chords and mix them up with some passing random notes. I did a lot of "turn around"s too. There are some runs in there, but I wanted the F#m legato to be a bit more effective with a little interval leap. The last part before returning to Am was only improv (I've explored a bebop-like fragment in it but i'm not sure about that...
) cause I concentrated on the timing mainly and I was like sweating bucketfuls for 2 days.
Anyway, hope it's not that bad after all

Great takes so far guys!!
Pedja's take is just awesome, don't know why, but i hear some Al di Meola in there. Am i wrong?
Andy thank you for your (first) take !
I like what you have done in certain sections but somehow I think you can do even better (especially last cadence F/G G#dim7 A min part).
Record more takes, post them here, 9 more days left, do one take a day if you can and you will find your perfect take.
You are absolutely right about backing by the way. This type of harmony is not in one key and is definitely not something you are used to playing over guys. You mostly had Blues collabs and some Major and/or Minor type harmonies. This one is Minor with some modal harmonies combined so you have to use your ear as well as scale knowledge.
Andy your A minor to C minor part was really good example how you used Voice Leading to get from note from previous chord into the closest note of the next one !
Thats what makes Fusion music work and connected, you have to use voice leading when improvising. Jumping around is OK when you apply some rest in your solos, otherwise it sounds unconnected !
Hope these advices help out a bit
As far as Al Di Meola reference goes I will say THANK YOU , but to be honest I never spent any time listening to him and his style ! He plays Spanish type harmonies, uses alternate picking and muting and that just doesn't work for me.
Guitar players that I listen(ed) a lot are Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, John Scofield and of course Scott Henderson but also sax players like Michael Brecker, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker !
So thats my real influence and where I get all my inspiration from when I try to create something.
I am glad you enjoyed solo, I will record some easier ones and post them hopefully tomorrow.
Feel free to ask any questions guys and keep posting your takes - we are all here to learn and help each other out !

Your style is hard to pin down. Just when I think you are a straight blues guy you rip off a shred run and confuse me.
I am really gonna have to force my fingers to "behave" on this take. Should be fun.

Awesome Andy ! I think you can type on Youtube Steps Ahead and hear some cool stuff already there You are definitely not pushing to hard !! I feel a bit like back in school and i really hope you will continue collaborations around chord progressions like that.
I really feel we need to organize a master class series on this kind of lessons. I will talk to Kris and Maria see what they think of it, but idea is to have step by step layout of how to approach complex harmonies. Voice leading soloing, repetition , sequence, motive development, melodic shapes and contour, rhythmic repetition, trough composed soloing, single vs double time feel, odd vs even etc. You get the idea Next collaboration could be Blue Bossa , easier Jazz type, like Berko and some other members suggested Paiva was one I think also
I am in the chat now guys so come in if you are around and want to talk a bit about Fusion Collaboration

Thanks for your take Berko !
It sounds like you recorded couple of different guitar parts at different spots ?
Same thing as for everyone - 9 days left , do as many takes as you want and choose the one that rocks hard for you
Thanks man
Well ok, I thought it was going to fit nicely over the BT! I recorded the fast runs separately. The slides seem to overlap each other but actually that was some silly solution to connect to the Cm part... and I almost got my fingers tangled forever
Oh, and for the last part I tuned my B string to A to make that open-string legato motif
Wasn't an easy job to put this stuff together properly...
This was my first fusion attempt ever and I'm really curios about your comments on everybody's take. Thanx again, Pedja and don't refuse to "torture" us with these more "modal" BTs!

Ok Pedja, here's my take.
I had to stretch a bit to get this one, especially to stay with the chord changes at the end. Overall, I think it turned out pretty good...anxious to see what everyone thinks. Need to smooth out my legato though. Thanks so much for putting this collab together. It was a blast. I cant' wait to hear everone's takes.

And thanks Pedja for making this collab. I have never played much fusion at all, So it was really fun jamming with this BT, and this is a style I further want to explore in the future

Thanks

Hey Pedja, I see I've almost missed some important discussions here
This step-by-step collab series would be a great idea.
I can see now why you've organized such collabs so far (and why you plan a bossa as an upcoming idea). When I always read about your suggestions in the first post of these collabs about sequences, motif development etc. it is clear that your aim is not to simply torture us with complex backings and you surely help a lot when we ask. However, when I browse GMC and other stuff to help me out on creating something that at least a little resembles fusion or funk in your collabs it makes it a bit difficult and that's why I think even GMC is limited to only providing some (passive) examples rather than helping in composition with giving feedback live and supporting a platform to present our humble stuff (and parallel to this: getting us develop even more).
What Andy suggested, if I understand it correctly, is to provide these collabs but merging them with special guidelines. So in each collab we focus on different composition skills and we do that by doing our stuff and learn new theory related to it. Such masterclass series would be an awesome initiative and as far as I see it there are many members willing to participate (including meeee
).
I'm curious about your thought on this subject, Pedja!
EDIT: Oh and btw a first approach could be what you have just done with this collab: make your own solos to create lessons that are closely related to each collab. Anyway, some structure will be definitely needed to keep this together. It would be a pity to let such organized info (like your epic posts) simply sink to the bottom of our mighty GMC forum...

Yes, something like this.
If you cover a topic (complex harmonies, voice leading soloing, repetition , motive development, melodic shapes, ...) in one lesson of this series, it could be cool to work on the same topic in the next collab.
This collab for example is a bit different as usual. Normally the comments are only at the end, but you guide everybody already a bit to optimize his take. This approach would be great to really work on these topics. Collab is maybe not the right word .. it's a bit like a classroom
@berko : exactly
... a lot of theory is explained in lessons, but to work on this we are often on our own. To get started with topics like this, some initial guide would be really helpful !

I agree with you Andy as well !
So if I understood this correctly , I create a lesson over some backing track, and I use Repetition entirely , perhaps another device, like melodic shapes. Now we use that same backing track for Collaboration where you guys are asked you compose or improvise your solo using only these two devices ! I guide you and give you some rhythmic tips, record more solo samples (like I did for Fusion collab today) and I answer your questions. When the final mix is done , I comment and tell what was good and not so good like so far and point you where you need more work.
Am I getting warm or ?

Great concept, was thinking the same as well. Lesson-based "classrooms" could then give a structure to the whole idea.

If everything goes as planed, this might start from next collaboration , and I already have tons of stuff planed for you guys to have fun with - I think you will really enjoy it.
One other thing regarding lesson based classrooms... This will be much easier to do and control once I finish my instructor video and get instructor board. I can then open up a specific section that could be called Collaboration Masterclass even Composing, Arranging, Ear Traning, Theory and Harmony etc. I think you get the idea
So I promise to do my best, I will finish lesson on Fusion solo tonight and tomorrow and then I will get to Instructor video next

Hey Pedja
I decided to upload one of my earlier takes on this one. I modified it a bit though. Some ideas are the same as in my previous take which I still consider as my main one, that's why I'm not going to upload this without BT.
With this take i would like to show you how I had to distract myself from purely sticking to the actual chords and applying straightforward scales to them - and instead incorporating random notes plus some other stuff. So you don't have to comment on this one but it can help when evaluating the other solo
Not to mention it is a clean solo and I didn't find the tone suitable for the final mix since other people recorded their take with a more powerful tone.
fusion_berko.mp3 ( 604.41K )
: 179Berko I like this take !
I don't see why you didn't upload it in the first place
Tone wise , yes I agree you can add some distortion to it in the after mix , but this is very melodic. I can include this in final mix if you want me to - your choice

Pedja, could you send me the line6 tone for this one? (I'm sure I'll have to adjust it to my hot-signal-high-output humbuckers though...)
Awesome Berko
Here is a tone I used for the solo

Harry I like it more then the first take. I especially like how you handled the last part with modulations (F# min , F/G , G# dim7 A min etC).
I think it shows a lot of improvement.
I will wait for your take when your toneport arrives

I like it Can, but I can tell you are dying to bust out a chromatic shred run!!
Good job man!! This is a tough style. I have been working on my take and I feel like a total beginner.

Good job Harry. You are one hard working dude!! I am very impressed. What is your favorite kind of music Harry? If you could play any solo by your favorite guitarist what would it be?

To be honest I dont know Pedja, they are nothing alike, I think I really need comments for both
Really put on the mix whichever you like. It's up to you

Monte, it was really hard to restrain myself and really I think thats a bad habbit, way before starting that speed exercises, I was playing slow, melodic and lovely, now I dont want to give in to some ultra speedy nonsense
well when I listen to it today, I see I was unnecessarily hasty, on this take too
Maybe you are right, its because this is a very hard challenge, I dont know, I was hardly able to pull out some lovely slow melodic licks out of these chords... Time will tell
Thank you
Cheers

I think you played quite nicely Can.
This is a very difficult chord progression. I also think that this style of playing is outside both of our comfort zones. It is definitely a chord progression that is meant for improvising. I am a horrible improviser. When I try to improvise it always devolves into a shredfest for me. I am much more of a compositional player. I can't just sit and do a take quickly. Maybe my improvising will improve but to be honest I love to sit and compose something.

thx a lot guys
that means really much to me, it shows me that i can do a lot more on that instrument just with sitting and practicing
Pedja i will do my best, to get it in really nice sound for you
THX for your comment
lcsdds just to answer your question there can be only one answer hehehe, Angus Young
i love his style and specially the ACDC style, it followed me nearly the whole life and i have seen some shows of them
but there are so many players which i like to be able to just some parts of them, Kirk Hammet, Reb Beach from Winger, and many many more
cya guys

Harry you could record same solo when your Toneport arrives if you want to !
Also another thing I didn't mention is, you need to upload two tracks - one where you solo with backing track (which you did) and another one where you just have your guitar without backing.
You can do that in Cubase by muting backing track and exporting just solo guitar
Thanks Harry

Can you explain me exact process of how you do it in Cubase ?
I might be able to help you out with that - will try at least !

Very rough take Pedja so ignore the sloppiness. How am I doing with the changes so far? I still have a few days to clean it up and change things if necessary. I am pretty happy with it, just need to practice it a little more and clean it up.
Posted by: Pedja Simovic Jan 25 2009, 08:10 PM
Nice take Monte
If you are happy with it keep it if you want to clean it up by all means do so
Thanks

Hey Pedja
i have recorded one take
but if i want to export the take and the backing together it has some latency, so it dont fit together
it sounds pretty good alone and i always was in time when recording it
maybe try to put it in your mix to a backing, and let me know if it fits
i am not able to mix it right
let me know if you need more
thx

Hey Harry
This sounds like you are doing A minor pentatonic trough the whole thing ?
I am not sure how that would fit in over C min and F# min part.
What seems to be problem with recording ? Did your toneport arrive yet ?
