Hi Robert,

Welcome to your December MTP thread. For your 1st assignment I was thinking between technique oriented assignment and theory&harmony based assignment. Since I would like to get you started with something easier for your 1st assignment, I decided to go with theory and harmony assignment.

Here is your 1st assignment!

Your 1st assignment for December is due week from today (10th of December)

Here is your assignment

Theory reading :

- I would like you to read my posts from links provided below.
- Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.
- Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc).
- Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major as well as in F and G major scales.

Here are the links:

Hello Pedja,

I noticed all the notes in the 3th & 4 th part harmony haven't got # of b notes. All the notes are dirived form the c maj scale.(C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C)

Here are the 3 th & 4th part harmony for C:

 Assigment__1_Dec.doc ( 25.5K ) : 179

Going from 3 part to the 4 part you would think the V Gmaj in 3 part would be in the 4 part harmony Gmaj7

The reason the V isn't Gmaj7 but G7 is because of the fact that F# (7 in Gmaj) is in the C maj scale?

Tomorrow I will work on F & G scale.

Fantastic work so far Robert. I have just one suggestion when it comes to 7th scale degree 4 part harmony. Try not to use - sign but rather Min7b5. That seems to be the standard in all lead sheets, real books and written music. There are exceptions when you will use + sign and that goes usually for Altered dominant chords like G7alt or G7+5 which means G7b13 really... Hope that makes sense smile.gif

Hello Pedja

Here is my part two (F & G ).  Assigment__1_Dec_part_2.doc ( 35K ) : 247

I have also written down the scale & interval from which the notes of a chord is taken.

So if I play a I, IV, V chord progression in F (Fmaj/ Bb/ C) I can use
Fmaj scale for I and IV chord
Dm scale for I chord

Bb maj scale for IV chord
Gmin sclae for IV

Cmaj scale for IV chord
Am scale for IV chord

Cheers
Robert

Great work and observations Robert. I will just correct you on 4 part harmony for scale degree VII. You wrote dim7b5. The chord is Minor7b5 or Min7b5. In 3 part harmony we get diminished triad but in 4 part that chord is actually minor 7th chord with flatted 5th hence Min7b5. Hope that makes sense.
Glad to see you worked parent scales and chords into your observations, well done.
Expect new assignment tomorrow or day after!

Hi Pedja,

Yes I agree on the chord part Copy paste item :-)

Hi Robert,

We are moving onto your 2nd assignment for December. I will give you another theory and harmony based assignment and then we will start with practical application of these in your 3rd assignment. Your 4th assignment will be chords based lesson that you will submit for REC by the end of month. Here is your assignment for time being smile.gif

2nd assignment for December is :

Chord progressions & harmony analysis

- Analyze all chord progressions bellow
- For each example write out the proper labeling of each chord
- Write a description explaining why you think certain chord progression is in such key/mode.
- For extra work, record those chord progressions and improvise over them - upload recording in this thread.

Example 1

// C / B min / A min / B min / C / B min / A min / G //

Example 2

// D min / G min / C / A min / D min / Bb / C / A min //

Example 3

// F min7 / Eb / Bb7 / Bb7 / F min7 / C min Eb / Bb7 / Bb7 //

Example 4

// Eb maj7 / D min7 / G min7 / F7 / Eb maj7 / C min7 / Bb maj7 / F7 //

Example 5

// D maj7 / B min7 / E min7 / A7 / D maj7 / F# min7 / G maj7 / A7 //

Deadline for this assignment is 17th of December.

Let me know if you got any questions!

Pedja

Hi Pedja,

Thanks for the 2nd assignment.

I am working on it right now. What do you mean with labeling each chord: write down the notes of the chord?

Hi Pedja

Here is my explanation an what key these progressions are. Thanks to your previous lesson this was quite easy. biggrin.gif

Here it is:  2nd_assignment_for_December.doc ( 27K ) : 161

I don't exactly understand what you mean with label the chord. Is it write down 1-3-5 etc with the notes?

Cheers
Robert

Robert you did great. I would just like you to instead of just finding the key where these chord progressions come from analyze them as MODE itself. So first chord progression starts on C but you determined real key is G major. What does that tell you?
I hope you got idea by what I am expecting in analysis now wink.gif

Hello Pedja,

Sorry but I don't quit understand what you mean.

Is this what you mean:

There are 7 modes:
1. Ionian mode (the major scale)
2. Dorian mode
3. Phrygian mode
4. Lydian mode
5. Mixolydian mode
6. Aolian mode (the natural minor scale)
7. Locrian mode

I can see that the first example // C / B min / A min / B min / C / B min / A min / G //

So we have a IV/III/II/III/IV/III/II/I progession.
It starts on the IV (sub-dominant) in the key of G with a C maj chord/
So that means the were are in the C- Lydian mode because, the Lydian Mode is the 4th note in the major key.

This fits to a Cmaj7 chord
Notes C Lydian Mode:
C-D-E-F#-G-A-B-C
If we compare it to the C major , C lydian looks a lot like the major scale with the exception of the raised 4th (F#)

Am is the second degree which means we have A Dorian here: A-B-C-D-E-F#-G-A A Dorian mode fits with min7 chord

Bm is on the third degree which means we have B Phrygian mode: B-C-D-E-F#-G-A-B Phrygian mode fits with min7 chord

G- Ioniam mode is the Gmaj scale

Helpful will be this table with the modes:

I hope this is what you wanted to see. Is this what you mean with labeling the chords

Cheers
Robert

Robert there are 3 steps to do this.
First you figure out the key chord progression is. In 1st example it is G major. 2nd step is figure out the 1st chord of the progression and thats your MODE!. So 1st chord is C chord which is 4th scale degree which makes this chord progression sound in C Lydian not G Ionian! Why? Because we keep looping it starting on C and making cadences like in C Lydian. Read the post on cadences once again and you will see roman numerals for all cadences in major scale harmony! 3rd and final step would be to label chord symbols based on mode ! So now C is I major or Imaj7 B min is VIImin etc you get the idea. You need to do that for all the examples. Hope that makes sense!

Robert you mostly did very good however I have couple of corrections for you.

Example 1 = PERFECT

Example 2 = C is bVII in relation to D not VII. There was also a typo I assume because you named both G min and A min IV min when it should have been IV min and V min. I assume it was done in a rush a bit so no big deal .

Example 3 = We got problems here. If F min is I , what is Eb? What about Bb? You wrote there VII and bIV?!? I want you to correct this on your own.

Example 4 = Why did you start with bI here? bI doesn't exist I am wondering how did you find that answer... So Ebmaj7 is I, what about the rest? D min is VII (because it is major 7th away from root) but what about G min? When you did F7 you should have wrote just II7 because it is dominant chord not major (there is a difference of course). Also look to correct labeling for C min and Bb maj7.

Example 5 = PERFECT

I think you are having problems with intervals and writing proper scale degrees. I am sure you understand it all, where it all comes from and why which is great but I think it is essential to label things correct way because you don't want to have gaps in your mind when you are improvising. Things like I will jump to bI or bIV never happen smile.gif So this is all you need to correct and I will get new assignment for you in a bit. This was B if I had to give a grade, only because of scale degree mistakes but you derived modes and scale origins perfectly!

Hi Pedja,

Here are my corrections

All based on this maj scale formula= w-w-h-w-w-w-h

2) The key is F. (F, G, A, B♭, C, D, E F)

I- II - III- IV- V- VI- VII
F-Gm-Am-Bb-C-Dm-Edim

This cadence starts on D which is the 6 degree know as Aeolian

So this cadence is D Aeolian D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C-D
D maj scale : D-E-F♯- G-A- B-C♯- D

// I min/ IV min / bVII maj/ V min / I min / bVI maj/bVII maj / V min
Dm / Gmin / C / Am / Dm / Bb / C / Am

** Question: In F the third degree A is min. Does in D Aeolin A still become min because in D Aeolin A is the V degree (which is dom7)

Example 3
Key- E b
I- II - III - IV - V- VI- VII
Eb-Fm7-Gm7-Ab – Bb7-Cm7-Dm7b5

This starts on the Fmin7 which is 2e interval of Eb.
So this must be F dorian (play F to F in Eb maj)
F dorian F-G-Ab-Bb-C-D-Eb-F
F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F

Candence:
// F min7 / Eb / Bb7 / Bb7 / F min7 / C min Eb / Bb7 / Bb7 //
// I min7 / bVII maj/ IV7 /IV 7 / I min7 / Vmin bVII maj / IV7/ IV7 //

example 4

2) Key of Bb
Bb maj= Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,A
Based on this is the key of Bb
I- II - III - IV - V- VI- VII
Bb- Cm7- Dm7- Ebmaj7- F7- Gm7- Am7b5

Cadence start on 4 th note so this is Eb Lydian

Eb Lydian= Eb,F,G,A, Bb,C,D,Eb
Eb major = Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb

// Eb maj7 / D min7 / G min7 / F7 / Eb maj7 / C min7 / Bb maj7 / F7 //
// I Maj7 / VII min / III min / II7 / I maj7 / VI min7/ V maj7 / II7//

Cheers Robert

Here are my corrections

All based on this maj scale formula= w-w-h-w-w-w-h

2) The key is F. (F, G, A, B♭, C, D, E F)

I- II - III- IV- V- VI- VII
F-Gm-Am-Bb-C-Dm-Edim

D maj scale : D-E-F♯- G-A- B-C♯- D

// I min/ IV min / bVII maj/ V min / I min / bVI maj/bVII maj / V min
Dm / Gmin / C / Am / Dm / Bb / C / Am

Example 3

Candence:
// F min7 / Eb / Bb7 / Bb7 / F min7 / C min Eb / Bb7 / Bb7 //
// I min7 / bVII maj/ IV7 /IV 7 / I min7 / Vmin bVII maj / IV7/ IV7 //

example 4

2) Key of Bb
Bb maj= Bb,C,D,Eb,F,G,A
Based on this is the key of Bb
I- II - III - IV - V- VI- VII
Bb- Cm7- Dm7- Ebmaj7- F7- Gm7- Am7b5

Cadence start on 4 th note so this is Eb Lydian

Eb Lydian= Eb,F,G,A, Bb,C,D,Eb
Eb major = Eb,F,G,Ab,Bb,C,D,Eb

// Eb maj7 / D min7 / G min7 / F7 / Eb maj7 / C min7 / Bb maj7 / F7 //
// I Maj7 / VII min / III min / II7 / I maj7 / VI min7/ V maj7 / II7//

Fantastic work Robert!

** Question: In F the third degree A is min. Does in D Aeolin A still become min because in D Aeolin A is the V degree (which is dom7)?
A minor exist in D Aeolian because it is related to F major scale and in F major A is minor as 3rd scale degree. Later you will start to analyze and learn chord formulas by themselves for each of the major modes. Then this question will quick immediately as each mode is related to major scale but then again each mode is treated as a scale itself!

Now we continue with the rest of the assignments Robert!

3rd assignment and REC:

Triads in C major scale part 1

- Record video of Triads in C major scale part 1 lesson found http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Triads_in_Major_Scale_Series_Part_1/
- Use backing track provided in the thread when recording it.
- Try to apply left hand fingerings I applied but stick to right hand fingerings all the way.
- Upload video on Youtube and post it in this thread here.
- Once you have the video, post it in REC thread for grading.

4th assignment :

- Theory and Harmony test, complete answers to 10 questions bellow :

1) C is V in what major scale?
2) If G is I what is III ?
3) If A min is III what is V?
4) If F is IV what is I?
5) If E diminished is VII what is I?
6) If D is V what is II ?
7) If B diminished is VII what is III?
8) If C min is III what is II?
9) If D min is VI what is V?
10) If G min is II what is I?

Deadline for these assignments is 31st of December.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi there Pedja

He are my answers for the 4th assignment

- Theory and Harmony test, complete answers to 10 questions bellow :

1) C is V in what major scale?

scale formula= w-w-h-w-w-w-h so
F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F

2) If G is I what is III ?
G maj scale = G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G so III=B

3) If A min is III what is V?
This is F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F
so V=C or C7

4) If F is IV what is I?
F is 4 th degree of C maj scale.
so I is C

5) If E diminished is VII what is I?
This is F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F
so I =F maj

6) If D is V what is II ?
G maj scale = G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G
so II=A

7) If B diminished is VII what is III?
This is C maj scale: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C
So III= Em

8) If C min is III what is II?
Ab Major scale has C on third degree.
Ab,Bb,C,Db,Eb,F,G
so II- Bbmin

9) If D min is VI what is V?
This is F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F
V=C

10) If G min is II what is I?
This is F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F
I=Fmaj

Will work on 3 th assigment asap

Cheers
Robert

Ab,Bb,C,Db,Eb,F,G
so II- Bbmin

9) If D min is VI what is V?
This is F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F
V=C

10) If G min is II what is I?
This is F maj= F-G-A, Bb, C, D, E, F
I=Fmaj

Will work on 3 th assigment asap

Cheers
Robert

Hello Robert,

How is the REC assignment coming along ? We should have it completed by 31st. Let me know if there are any problems with it!

Hi Pedja

I was ill for a few days, so i couldn't play.

I have picked up the guitar since yesterday and played the progression in all 4 positions, not at full speed but that will come.

I will make a video before the 31th

I have worked out the theory on this already to fully understand.

What I have discovered analysing your lesson is that in the progression in the key of C the I, IV and V are containing there relative minors by adding a 6 th on the II, III and VI degree:
I-->VI (C-->AM)
IV-->III (F--DM)
V--> II (G-->Em)

I wasn't aware of that until now. I supposed that goes for every key you play.

Cheers
Robert

Hi Robert,

I hope that your health situation is much better and that you have recovered fully now. I am glad you discovered parent chords within major scales - this also works for relative pentatonics ( C major = A min , D min = F maj, E min = G maj ).

Look forward to video for REC tomorrow !

Hi Robert

I just watched the video and there are couple of things I would like to say.

1) This is definitely passing material. I would give this 7 or 8 perhaps even 9 if I am in the holiday mood which I am smile.gif
2) You should just play chords longer, full duration, rather than staccato which you did. Last string set 321 was the closest to what you should have done.
3) Sound could have had more bass, there was a lot of treble in this one.

Overall this is passing and you can go ahead and submit for REC. I hope these points are made are useful for future takes!

Hello Pedja

Thx for your feedback

1) thx I hope you will stay in a holiday mood for long time biggrin.gif
2) I agree, that would have sound better
3) I first had a take with the "bass"sound but I changed to the other pick up which I normaly used in other lesson. For this I think you are right more bass could be better.

Hehe thank you Robert!
I just want to remind you to post voting pool when you submit this one for REC thread. That way all instructors can cast a vote and give you a grade!
