I hear alot about cleaners vs guitars and to be honest it depends on what your cleaning. The paint on the body can handle almost all cleaners assuming you apply to cloth first and wipe dry when done cleaning. They usually have a clear laquer finish which is resistant to most everything but heat and paint thinners such as nail polish remover, etc.
To be honest, except for fretboard conditioners (just use lemon oil, or butchers wax, etc.), and polishes, most guitar cleaners are mostly water. One used guitar I bought came COVERED in yellow smoker grime and smelled of 10 year old tobacco. Guitar cleaner just didn't cut it. I used 3-1 cleaner (Degreaser, Cleaner, Protectant) and scrubbed for over 3 hours and when I was finally done it looked beautiful. When I sold it 5 years later it still looked brand new.
