Recently I had to have a tooth pulled due to an infection it got from several years kidney problems and surgeries (The two are connected I guess). When it got pulled, it went great! I felt so much better, nothing worse than a toothache. And man it was some serious pain, almost as bad as my kidney stones.

The worst part were these massive headaches my tooth would cause me, after it got pulled I thought it would be so much better, and in a way it is.

But...

The side effects from the combination my antibiotics and pain medicine? - Possible migraines! laugh.gif

Is it me or does some time the side effects of medicine become almost as bad as the problem there treating?

I alway try to limit the medicine I take to nothing because in 80% of the minor everyday sickness you don't need them except to lessen the pain or to feel comfortable.

Not a big fan of medicine myself...but once I had to take some pills for a couple of months and the side-effects sounded horrible. But the only side-effect I got in the first two weeks that I got really tired and fell asleep 30 minutes after I took the pills. After that everything was fine.

I can sympathise - I'm allergic to penicillin and so if I get a chest infection I have to take erythomicin instead. That always leaves me feeling physically sick for days after. Family doc tells me at least I know it's working rolleyes.gif

A little known word used to describe a certain mechanism/cause of an ailment is, iatrogenic.

iatrogenic
[ī′atrōjen′ik, yat-]
Etymology: Gk, iatros, physician, genein, to produce
caused by treatment or diagnostic procedures. An iatrogenic disorder is a condition that is caused by medical personnel or procedures or that develops through exposure to the environment of a health care facility.

Adverse reactions to medical care, result in over 80,000 hospital admissions, per year, in Canada. Not a wonderful statistic as about 24,000 of those people drop dead. The US numbers are proportionate to the population difference between Canada and the US. I'm not sure what European numbers are, though I suspect they wouldn't be much better.

In many instances, one can extend their period of good health, by limiting their exposure to the healthcare system...anywhere.

I will leave this discussion with a quote from my dad, who is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon: Life is NOT a pharmaceutical deficiency state.

Don't you just love irony! I do...

You think that's bad, it affects more than just medicines, who here likes coke?

This is a study on the irony of drinking Diet Coke daily compared to normal Coke as a healther option:
QUOTE
Diet coke and Coke Zero both have the sweetener aspartame in them and that's nasty stuff.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet is an active ingredient in Diet Coke, rather than using sugar, a brain drug that stimulates your brain so you think that the food you're eating tastes sweet. The problem with it is it causes you to crave carbohydrates, wanting to eat more. Hence, you won't lose weight using it. So much for Diet?

Aspartame/Nutrasweet (aspartylphenylalanine-methyl-ester) also breaks down to poison constituents at 86 degrees (Aspartic Acid 40%, Phenylalanine 50%, and Methanol 10%). Remember your stomach is at 98.6 degrees! Therefore you should never use Aspartame/Nutrasweet in hot beverages or cooked foods. You are basically poisoning yourself. Burning Mouth Syndrome due to the acid?

Aspartic Acid is an "excitotoxin" in the brain and excites neurons to death, kills off brain cells.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet triggers Migraine Headaches.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet's breakdown products attack the bodies tissues and create Formaldehyde which builds up in the tissues forever. Formaldehyde is thought to cause cancer.

Aspartame/Nutrasweet also breaks down to diketopiperazine [DKP] which is proven to cause Brain Tumors!

Think that's bad? Coke is worst for you.

Energy drinks and specially coke is high in sugar. Massive amounts of sugar in anything will cause bodily harm. Aside from bringing on Diabetes, excess amounts of sugar will increase your body weight, which makes your body work harder just to function daily. It gives a quick rush which the body craves, but doesn't last so you want more or will crash.

Colas also contain ethylene glycol, which is used in anti-freeze. Ethylene glycol is a slow poison, it won't kill you if you have it in small quantities but it will kill you in large quantities.

The last major reason cola's are bad for you is the extremely high acidity. The pH for colas is around 3.4, strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones.

Coke cola trucks require toxic signs for the Coke concentrate, or Coke syrup. It will desolve a nail if left in a glass of it. It's also really good stuff to clean the trucks engine and metals.

It's not the sugar in coke that will cause cavities it's the high acidity.

Coca — aka cocaine, use to be in coke, which is where the name came from. Coca-Cola did once contain an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass, but in 1903 it was removed. Coca-Cola still contains coca flavoring.

Enjoy drinking coke, I actually like the stuff.
Add bourbon with coke that's my favourite poison. smile.gif

The thing to learn, is don't freak so much but too much of anything will kill you.

Everything we drink or eat seems to have a few side-effects these days! tongue.gif

Yeah, it's best not to think about it too hard...
Interesting article, I remember when I was in 10th grade and a few kids drank 1,5 litres of coke on a regular 8 - 13 school day, our chemistry teacher showed us an experiment. He put a raw piece of meat in a bowl with coke. Next day...the meat was dissolved.

It's a very slippery slope when you start chasing side effects with other drugs!
