I took a musical history class in my early days of college, and one thing I remember the teacher telling us is that artists have 3 different stages.
Stage 1 where they are emulating
Stage 2 where they come into their own
Stage 3 where they go into a different direction
She said from Beethoven to Zeppelin you can see this pattern. (Usually with the second stage being the most 'popular')
But sometimes these artists and bands can have some misses. Sophomore slump, label pressure and a major band fighting can lead to something that just plain stinks.
What are some of your favorite bands that put out something that you consider a complete miss?
OR is there an album that is way different for a band that you totally love that might not be popular?
I LOVE Stone Temple Pilots' Tiny Music album. It's a garagey, striped down vibe that at points feels a little disconnected in the writing (mostly because the singer was in rehab during the initial recordings). But Other STP fans consider it a miss.

I always loved this song - I just figured it was them noodling with sort of an updated 60s vibe (so I thought they nailed it).
My favorite band is Tool, and about half of their stuff I don't even listen to because I think they're misses (to me), but being half their stuff, it's exactly what they intended, but it's the other half I do like resonates deep.
As far as misses for me, I think everything Metallica has done except Enter Sandman since Master of Puppets - although I'm not a huge Metallica fan.
And then there's Rush phase when Geddy decided he wanted the band to be keyboard dominant.
Queensryche went downhill fast when Hear in the Now Frontier came out, then DeGarmo left and they've sucked ever since.
I guess I typically don't like everything a band comes up with, but depending on the overall dominant vibe of the band determines if I love them or not.

I love the Megadeth album 'Cryptic Writings'. To me, it has Dave's best singing and even though it's not as heavy or out and out metal as some of their other releases, the whole album is a journey. It's much more like what the old Zeppelin albums were like. Not every song has the same intensity, or even same genre.. but together as a listening experience, it all works.
Plus, the production was great. The added atmosphere that Dan Huff brought to the record is something that has been missing since the 'Deth went back to the metal. For some reason, it's like their heavier records since then sound even more dated than C.W. and I think it's because C.W. sounded mature whereas all the albums since 'The System Has Failed', although having great material, somehow seem like a step backwards.
When Dave re-mastered C.W. he left out a lot of the samples and noises from the original and it just isn't the same. The flatline sound in 'Use The Man' is gone, which was one of the most effective parts of the song !
Risk was a step too far into soft land for me, but there were still moments of greatness like Prince of Darkness, The Doctor is Calling and Time.

+1 to Criptic Writings!! I love the album and I still listen to it very frequently. It's different from their heavier stuff but it's just perfect! 
On the other hand, their album Risk is different and I think that it's not good, it's empty, I don't like it. I didn't hear the following albums too much but I know that they are irregular.

I couldn't express myself in respect to Megadeth because I never liked the band (I know, I know, stay your rotten tomatoes ready to plunge towards me 
) but to add another album which I didn't particularly like ...

I thought Tool Fans were hardcore about all their stuff. I'm surprised to hear this. Tool is hit or miss with me, but I've never dived too deep into their stuff.
Like the Perfect Circle stuff? I jammed their second album hard, for a long time.
What about Death Magnetic? I hard the singles on that one when it came out. Felt like Metallica going back to And Justice For All

I think that Tool can't be called a hit and miss Neither can A perfect circle. Maynard is that kind of guy that touches something and turns it into gold - but, that's just me 
Otherwise, I would say, all that Linkin Park did after Meteora and Hybrid Theory, was a sort of a hit and miss for me, because somehow they put on a new skin that wasn't ok for them - any thoughts on this, guys?

I think what Tool does is very good overall, but they have a lot of songs that just drone on and on. I understand to many people (obviously the band included) this is a great musical place to be, but to me, it's just not my vibe - especially when listening to the stuff by them which I really enjoy.
Tool is more about painting an emotion and creating a visual than they are about writing hits - and I love that about them.
I've been to 3 of their shows and they come out and pound you with heavy grooves, then switch the mood entirely and drone you down with a hypnotic ambiance that to me, is the perfect time to go to the bathroom.
I love A.P.C. too - Me De Noms is my favorite album by them - I just recently got their Red Rocks concert and it is a must have, but they changed up 3 Lybras to something that sounds nothing like the original song. Also the latest lineup of APC (this concert included) has 2 guys from Pussifer in it.
My favorite APC songs are Magdalena and The Outsider - but what I love about APC is they keep you in the same sort of sonic cocoon they wrap you in - everything is in the same general area.

Indeed - Tool is definitely not hit music
it doesn't have to be Painting emotions is tho, one of the best descriptions I ever heard about Tool or about Maynard's music in general. This song stays among my favorites and this live interpretation is something unique:

) but to add another album which I didn't particularly like ...This was the album that made me turn away from Metallica. To be it sounded cheap and 1/2 assed. I'm even one of the few people that really enjoyed Load and ReLoad. Sure its not to some taste but I liked the pushing new boundaries and trying new things and found the longs to have depth to them. And lars will forever be known for having the worse sounding snare ever. I have cake tins that sound better than that snare.
On another note. God I hate Lars. Even if you ignore all the annoying things he has ever done he just seems like one of those people I dislike and distrust just by look alone. That and Bono. Hey there is a thread idea. Artist you hate on a personally level and it has nothing to do with their music.

Mate, Load and Re-Load are my favorite albums from Metallica
A lot of people don't get it, but hey, who's to say that they should get what's in my head and heart? I think those two albums sound very nice both recording wise and composition wise even today
