GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Intense Rock

Posted by: Jenkinson May 22 2008, 09:48 PM

Hey Guys,

Yesterday I bought PG's Intense Rock Complete, wich is chalk full of AP licks, legato, string skipping, and some sweeping.

I realized yesterday when I was watching it, the most important thing for me, is to balance my shred. Like David's lesson showed, shredding needs to be used at the right time, and can grow boring and frustrating, not only to non guitarists, but to guitarists also.

I understand to each his own, some people like to do nothing but shred, but I need some slow melody.

I enjoyed Paul's playing more when he slowed it down and showed us phrasing.

It is an ok video with some terrifying speed runs, and some cool techniques like arppeggio string skipping (which paul prefers instead of sweeping ).

I would recommend this to someone who wants to seriously focus on and only on playing fast.

I give it 2 1/2 stars.

Its a really good DVD imo! Back then paul was still very young and trying his best to keep up with all the hot new shredders on the scene like Satch and Yngwie ! But I think the idea of the DVD is to show licks and runs that you can work into actual music. Today paul is IMO one of the most musical sounding hard rock/shred guitarists out there smile.gif

Paul have a great rhythm ability, and a great blues taste. His videos are so useful for mastering techniques even for a guitarist who don't wanna be a shredder, this is just my opinion.

Maybe I was a little harsh. His phrasing ability is amazing, how he will "try to find a better note to end on," and that he can remember his phrases like that is great. His approach to applying notes to a beat is very cool, and has helped me out. I just got frustrated watching an hour of shredding, maybe I should break it into segments next time.

You should check out some of pauls recent work. He throws shred in very tastefully, and he is incredibly musical! smile.gif Also check out his more recent instructional Get out of my Yard DVD, its awsome! Loads of rock guitar in there wink.gif

Aren't instrcutional videos best for shredding? I mean, phrasing and stuff is something I don't really want to learn from instrcutional videos, but some help with tricks for playing faster and better technique in general is what I want from instructional dvds. And if I get to chose one where I can watch the coolest person in the world (mr. Gilberto) then I'd be glad to watch it, even if it's only good for shredding.

Just my opinion.

Paul is awesome, he can mimic their styles. I think he enjoys the different style comming up and jamming differently with them.
