So today is the day where Metallica's New Album waiting in the store's.
I bought it and i think i need more time to like it:) But what i can say after listen to it the first time i don't like the Style of the lyrics. This Staccato style in nearly all songs make me sick:) I think you know what i mean.
Examples: Luck. Runs. Out. or Show your Scars or They Scratch me, They Scrape me, They Cut an Rape me.
Why Hetfield write lyrics like that and not like Santarium or the early days.
But the rest is good at the moment:)
Edguy
I've had a few listens to it, and in my opinion it's ok..
It's not something great, not bad at all, but quite boring a few times.
Some riffs and songs are cool, but it lacks something.
I can't put my finger on it but I had hoped for more
Still, much better than their last effort
For some reason, I don't like James voice...Unforgiven III destroyed my views from the previous unforgiven's, I think they made a new music and just named it unforgiven III for people to buy it and try to follow some sort of a story. It's better than St.Anger, but still, good thing I didn't buy it...My crazy metallica fan Carlos did
I would say that this album is fairly average. But considering that St Anger was, in my opinion, one of the worst albums ever released I guess this is an improvement.
I actually quite like it to be honest, I'm not saying its the best of '08 or the best ever or whatever. But it was enjoyable to listen to, Sound somewhat like "...And Justice For All" a little to me.
I'm a big Metallica fan aswell, and I must say I love this album. I've listened to it twice through so far!! My favourite song at the moment has to be Cyanide.
It's definatley not better than Master Of Puppets, Black Album and the earlier ones. Metallica can never get back to 'old metallica' they are now 'modern metallica'. I'm pleased Lars took out that awful snare sound he had on St. Anger.
I'm definatley pleased with this album. I love it!
I really like the album, but the lyrics are just childishly written.
I mostly like it but I haven't had a chance to listen really hard yet.
I love that stuttering riff on Broken Beat & Scarred. I mean, I really, really love that riff.
While the song is OK, just the idea of there being Unforgiven III bugs me. Unforgiven I and II were bad enough.
There's a lot of good ideas in the album, I think. It seemed that they made up their mind to have long songs and for a couple songs could have been a lot better if they cut them down a bit (The Day that Never Comes comes to mind).
I expected to be blown away. I don't think I was so I'm a little disappointed. It's a lot better than Load, Reload, and St Anger though. There's some good stuff there though. It raises even more expectations for the next album.
I like it, not all songs, but I consider worth buying if you are the Old Metallica fan, they kind of have the sound of ...And Justice for All, sound has definitely improved, I don't know what they tried to do with St. Anger I couldn't stand the mix and production of the album. On this one even though the sound is raw and dry, it sounds much better. I agree that the lyrics are not the best, James used to write deep lyrics, they were dark but I liked them, I guess I am dark too.
Ehhhh....
It's ok.
Better than St Anger. But is that the bar that should be set for a band like Metallica? All over the web we read peoples comments on this album. And the common denominator seems to be "It doesnt suck" and "Better than St Anger". Those arent high marks.
Some bands have 1 good album in them.
Some have 10.
Metallica had 5.
In today's music scene Metallica aren't leading the charge. They're being passed by the likes of Lamb of God, Trivium, Shadows Fall and others. And there isn't anything wrong with that. Rarely does a band stay on its A game for more than 2 albums.
Don't settle for a mediocre album with a recognizeable brand name on it. Dig and discover a band you havent heard of yet and find your next Metallica.
Some songs have some nice parts but overall I find this album nothing special and rather boring (imo ofcourse)
FYI - shouldnt this thread be moved to the Review/Wiki section?
Im happy with it i think its there best album since the black album
The new album is great! Some songs even sound a lil' bit like AJFA! Just with other lyrics. I think one shoud listen to it a few times before judging the whole album. Metallica-songs always get better after hearing them many times.
wut happened to old metallica, the opes who brought metal back from the deep abyss known as Hair Metal. Dont get me wrong, I like Hair Metal but Metallica is epic
I must say I'm liking it so far
Best stuff since the Black album. It definitely fits in with the great albums of the past. It's not at the level of those, but it's an excellent album.
I like that it has alot of the vintage thrash vibe of the old stuff and that it sounds new and different compared to the other heavy bands out there. There will never be another Master of Puppets, Lightning or Justice.
Death magnetic is not as great as their older stuff (kill em all-black album)but i'm actually starting to get addicted to it
Hey guys,
Been listening on the album on repeat 9 hours at work. Well, some pauses of course but not many.
I think the album is 9.5/10 and this is why:
The songs are just insane! Great rhythm guitars (don't like the solos too much), bass good but a bit "hidden".
Hetfields vocals are 10/10, I think he really delievers on this album. About the lyrics, very good imho!
Lars is banging the drums as he should, hard and tight enough. I really like the whole production. It gives a kind
of garage, live more dirty feeling than the most shit I listen to these days. It really sounds oldschool AND modern but
still as many say, old Metallica. I hear Sabbath, RATM, Slayer and even Disturbed in some of the riffs. Really cool stuff.
Hetfield is Hetfield but he really shines at some parts like in Cyanide "Suicide I've already died" etc is wicked!
Judas kiss is also insanely great especially the vocals are superb! It's also in Judas Kiss you can here a bit of
Disturbed on the Chorus riff. Anyway, I won't bore you with me reviewing all the songs haha.
I can't really say why the solos isn't feeling perfect... they ARE very good but it feels like someone else said like
Mr Kirk put some of the solos just as "fillers" and not as a songlifting solos... if you know what I mean.
If those old farts manage to play these songs live gig after gig on tour man, oh man... They ARE ON DRUGS!
Metallica rules again! Much respect!
i acually love the album. has some sweet riffs. first day!
I've only heard their single... not bad, but the drums sound like a trash can... I would like to hear the rest...
I only heard a few songs, and after hearing those songs I'm not interested in buying the album.
I agree with RIP, i love metallica, but this album wasnt it for me :S Il just stick to the older songs ^^
I think the album is pretty cool, a lot of classic Metallica headbanging riffs. I was a little disappointed about unforgiven III, and Day that never comes was ok. Except those, the first 6 tunes are killer! And My apocalypse.
By the way, I have an idea I would like to share.
Track 9, Suicide and Redemption. Since this is a instrumental song, the song couldn`t have been named after the lyrics. So I wondered if it was meant to symbolize Metallica`s latest records. St. Anger was suicide, Death Magnetic is redemption. What do you think ?
Mh i have to say i change my Opinion after listen to the album a couple of times:)
I really love what Metallica did:) Hetfield's voice sounds amazing and their really nice riffs there. Maybe it was not the best idea from me to listen to the record that early in the morning:)
Edguy
Havent listened to it tht much but Cyanid is my favorite song
Not bad not great, simple as that
I was skeptical... but the album is actually pretty good!
Ive listened to it five times, and its so average, i find myself just not able to like it. also, did anyone else notice the Horrid production? the entire album is the victim of clipping and generally muddy production. Unfortunately, its NOT a thrash album, like they promised. oh well, i guess i just don't care about metallica anymore.
Well, the first single from the album, kinda grow on me.I will go to stores for shore. But I don;t like the idea of Unforgiven III,but,I will wait and hear.
Defenetly sounds better then the last one.
I think its geat that htis kind of discussions are done with a band as great as Metallica once was. I think we are all holding onto something that may get great again.
Kinda like the Cleveland Browns.
Its apparent all of us loved the Metallica Gods at one point.
But I agree with Jer. The CD is ok. Just not as great as it used to be.
I bought Death Magnetic last night on iTunes. (which I find kinda ironic just due to the whole digital downloading saga with Napster. I know iTunes is a legal site and I paid for it and all but it still amuses me a bit.) Anyways I must say I kind of like it. It's not the Metallica I grew up listening to back in the 80's but I'm not holding that against them. The 80's were 20 odd yrs ago and well the band has changed a lot since then, but I did see glimmers of their former hay days. The riffs are catchy, and I think pretty solid. Also James is pretty solid vocally I think. I've only had a few listens however I believe they put out a good album, not all will like it and that's fine, but for me it has earned a rotation on my iPod.
rok
My personal opinion is that the album is utter garbage in comparison to SO many other metal bands that are out their trying to make a name for themselves. Bands who are working hard to make a name for themselves and putting out good music, not just sitting back and releasing garbage and cashing in on royalties.
The lyrics and vocals are just horrible and the guitar-work is so... uninspired. Metallica is the band that made me want to play guitar (Master of Puppets to be specific) but I want nothing to do with any of the music they've created this century. Sure, it's better than Saint Anger, but that doesn't say anything.
The part that really surprised me was how bad the production/sound of the album was, and apparently I'm not the only one who's noticed: http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/09/does-metallicas.html
just my opinion tho...
I definitely like the album and I refuse to classify music and compare different bands/songs/albums.
Damn, this is music, it's art ... you can't say there's anything wrong because it's the way the band wants to play it!
You just don't look at a model magazineand say "Hey, the girl on this photo looks hotter than Mona Lisa, Da Vinci sucks!"
I agree in most points with Iron King ... especially the propulsive Cyanide and the terrific riff in BB&S make me hear and practice this songs whenever and wherever I can.
I think some of the tracks are nice.
This is not Metallicas finest, but without comparing too much many of the tracks are worth listening to.
Unforgiven III is a nice track but does not live up to the legacy of I and II...
Musical technique is good, but the feeling is not completely there.. I miss the real anger and sorrow in James' voice that gave you a cold chill down your spine..
I do think "The day that never comes" is the best track on the album .. I don't care if it sounds a bit like one.. they are allowed to it's their track anyway.. And the video is even about the same subject just more actual. I like it. War sucks Metallica rocks.
For my final judgement I'd like to see Death Magnetic performed live.
just my 2 cents. Rooks
Well I bought the Album and I am actually really pleased with it
Sure its not like Black and Master of the Puppets, but It does bring me back to those feelings I got when I listened to songs off that album.
I really like "The Day That Never Comes" , "All Nightmare Long", and "Broken Beat and Scarred"
I think everyone is taking things a step too far saying things like " Oh Its Awful " , "Terrible" .
Nothing is every going to be the same as it used to be. You cant dwell on hoping that Metallica will somehow go back to what they were and have every album be as good as their old ones. Thats just stupid thinking. I think Metallica gave it their all on this one, put together 10 good tracks, and made what I believe is a pretty good album.
Now im going to stop talking, and just enjoy the music
I like the new album too... can't really say why!? but I keep on playing it for days now... Really like The Day That Never Comes!
In my opinion:
1. Master of Puppets
1. Ride The lightning (Can't decide beetween those two. )
3. Death Magnetic
4. Kill Em All
5. ... And Justice For All
6. Black Album
7. St. Anger
8. Load
9. ReLoad
_MY_ opinion.
Edit: The fact that I can't decide is a good thing though!
this album -I dont know why- gave me a ride the lightning'ish impression... and I must say that I HATED the work done by the recording engineer, the mix sucks... and I wonder where the hell has gone metallica's good old hi-fi drum sound.
Vocals were hidden under a shroud of noise made by the horrible snare drum and lame cymball eq, and clean guitar sound was a mess...
All and all I had the impression of a better than fair album (considering the work made since black album) wasted by some mixing technician and poor producing capabilities...
Considering metallica's succes is (at least half of it) made of trade mark hi-fi sound I wonder what is metallica up to...
I listened to it maybe 4 or 5 times now, and well... it is much better than anything since load in my opinion, but all in all a bit boring
At least they didn't release St. Anger II, even though I have to say that Idon't really find this "Justice for all II" much more creative. The album just sounds too constructed for me.
I still haven't listened to it, and honestly...don't have any intention to do so.
Meatlicka died the day Cliff died, or at least...the band's ability to write music.
Say what you will, I think the album is fantastic... Not just coming from a Metallica fanboy but I really don't see a lot of reasons how someone could not enjoy it. To each their own
I think it is the worst mix of an album ever. A shame as well as some songs aren't so bad. It's so distorted I can't listen to it though.
Thats what surprised me too, I expected a slightly better production...
but again, this might be concept, I also never liked the sound of "Justice"
I have'nt listened to it more than twice since it came out pretty much sums it up for me,
but thats not too bad cos im listening to triviums new record and all that remains to far far better in my opinion also we have had the new slipknot record which is pretty good to, ooooh and the new gojira record awesome!!!.
Plus i just bought tickets to judas priest who are being supported by megadeth and testament (AWESOME) so don't get to down folks there is life beyond metallica and its about time we just accepted it.
Later on
