This is also why you see him pimping various signature line products. The money to be made is as a result of his fame, stemming from Periphery, not from actually making money being in Periphery. As he says, Periphery is a break even business. They don't actually make money. Touring is expensive and record sales are almost non existent. So how is a guy to put food on the table? Same way Misha does. Break through the noise barrier, get a decent sized following, and milk it for all it's worth by taking advantage of lucrative sponsorship deals and such. Thus why he has a signature pickup, guitar, over drive pedal, etc. Also by using your recognition to promote other products that are useful to the making of music. The AMPHION audio monitors he is using right now are around Ten Thousand bux and he didn't have to pay for them as they want folks like Misha to use them and speak well about them. Pretty much gone are the days when record sales/cd sales etc. could make you a decent living. Sure there are exceptions to every rule, but for guys in guitar bands playing math rock, it's not about unit sales. Not even about Merch. or about live shows. It's about the ancillary income from endorsement deals and the like. The key is actually developing a following. Then building on it. Making music alone is just not enough. Say you make the best record of all time. And you release it, to nobody. It sits there. Not making you any money or gaining you any recognition. If an album is released in the forest and nobody clicks on it on Spotify, does it actually make a sound? No, it doesn't. Now more than every it's critical to promote the brand that is you and your music in order to get over this hump. Assuming you want to make some sort of income with music. If not, then none of this crap matters. Just make music and put it on spotify and who cares if anyone notices. Once can focus entirely on "honing ones craft/growing as an artist", but the result is typically the tree falling in the forest scenario. That is something of a tradition on Music When I was playing in bar bands, all of the guys in other bands at the practice space had "sugar mommies" who were hard working gals that typically had high income, cash based, employment that allowed them to support their Musician Boyfriend. It was a small group of folks. Everyone knew everyone and you could visit their girlfriends by going to any of the local gentlemen's clubs.
