Anyone else still collect some form of obsolete media? I recently gave my VHS collection to CHAMPION VIDEO which is a private VHS rental shop run by a very passionate collector. I gave him my laserdisc collection as well. I kept my DVD collection which I'm still adding too. DVDs are very cheap now that they are sorta obsolete with BluRay and all. My PS4 upscales them to HD and I keep finding amazing deals on out of pint stuff. Anyone else have some oddball collection of something obsolete? I know FZALFA collects obsolete Super Computers and keeps them in his basement! Anyone else?

I don't 'collect' it but I'm not getting rid of my DVDs (or my CDs or my vinyl) anytime soon.

VINYL and CDS actually outsold digital media for the first time since 2011! VINYL has made a HUGE comeback in recent years. From an entirely dead medium, to now being the "hip" thing. Wads of metal bands releasing on vinyl and re releasing. I never got in to Vinyl, but I get it, warm sound, big cover art. Unlike downloads, which are just a data file, or a stream which isn't even really yours. I think part of it is the sense of dissociation with the music creating a response of people wanting to make the connection again. Buying something substantial, that you can see and hold. Tween girls are keeping CDs alive almost entirely by themselves.

I have a couple pals who are serious VHS collectors. One guy started his own video rental store with his vhs collection. It's called CHAMPION VIDEO. Saw a thing about it on CNN.

What's old is new again smile.gif

I friend of mine from India (she was an exchange student) commented that some American bedrooms are the rough equivalent of what they think of as a Mini Mall. Her village had one shop that rented movies, she said most folks she met had bigger personal collections in their home. One shop for music instruments/insstruction, I had more guitars than she'd ever seen in one place. Many folks don't even have their own tv, they pay a small amount to watch movies/sports at a local bar on a 40 inch hd set using the internal speakers. It's easy to forget the difference between what we have vs what some really poor countries have. I'm very happy to have my collection of gear, movies, etc. If I ever move to india I could always start a mini mall smile.gif

Yeah, me too.
But we have get all that crap over there wink.gif

*I know I just bought another guitar but I also sold one along with two pedals this week. I've been in divestiture mode for the last 3 years. It's actually been a secondary source of income.
My rules are that if I haven't used it for a year and it's not a 'valuable' piece - it goes on the block.
So far, no regrets.

I have been doing the same actually. My Ibanez collection had ballooned up to a dozen Ibbys and I had three full pedal boards and a huge rack of crap. I finally realized I never used most of it. I've been pairing down to what I actually play. So I'm down to 3 Ibbys smile.gif All MIJ of course. I sold off two of my three pedal boards. I kept the hotone pedal board with the on board mojo 5 watt amp and Xtomp pedal. It's a complete rig with amp on a pedal board. handy! I kept my 11 rack and myasnkov preamp with rocktron velocity power amp as well. So a live rig, practice rig, and a laptop going in to a big HDTV. smile.gif That's pretty much it for me. My home studio had gotten a bit out of control. It's much better now actually now that I"ve culled the herd a bit smile.gif

I do keep seeing folks home studio even pro studio rigs with an imac off to the side. This is where the majority of work gets done these days, not the console in many cases. But the speakers are still set up as if the console were the main work service. As a result folks mix to their left or right ear depending on which side the imac/laptop is sitting on. I had this problem too til I found a thunderbolt dock that lets me sit the laptop off to the left, and put my big HDTV in the middle. The dock has HDMI out and USB 3 out which my macbook doesn't have either. laptop, HDTV and a pair of monitors and you've got a home studio smile.gif

here is an example of the "side saddle" mix position. I have seen folks put the imac on a cart and wheel it to the middle position between the monitor sweet spot during production, then roll it back out of the way after. It's as if folks don't want to admit to themselves that they are working in the box? Do you know what I"m talking about? What do you think this is about?
