Hi!

I was wondering... what is the best way to practice let's say, licks or speed patterns? I noticed that when having just a dry overdrive my playing kinda sucks, when it comes to single note patterns. Is there a best way to practice there kinda things? Should I use a nice leadsound, overdrive, clean or even... *gulp* not amplified? In this case I am taling about lead guitar workouts, solos, and licks.

Thanx in advance!

Donny de Vries

Hey Donny:

Best way is to practice with both! When you play clean you have to focus on playing exactly the right notes. Playing with distortion focusses more on keeping the sounds clean, it helps you to learn the muting. If you can combine these, you'll play the right notes, and muting the right notes as well!!

Definitly both...Clean to be able to exactly hear what you're playing and have more tone control and on Gain to practice muting technique and cleaning up the sound.

Both is the correct answer, although I practice a lot of things on clean. But overdrive can help you to clean up the sound, and make every note even, cause it amplifies all your moves so you hear them loudly.

I also say both, if you only practice clean you might end up with a lot of unwanted noise when you suddenly play with distortion.

Depends on what you're practising. If the stuff you wanna learn is with distortion, I recommend maxing your gain, as it will be alot harder to avoid unwanted noise.

Either way I am definitely agreeing with the others; both.

I do both. If I'm just working on technique or speed, I'll just go unplugged most of the time. I plug in when I'm concentrating on cleaning up.
