Distortion Or Clean While Practicing?

I noticed that when having just a dry overdrive my playing kinda sucks, when it comes to single note patterns. Is there a best way to practice there kinda things? Should I use a nice leadsound, overdrive, clean or even... gulp not amplified? In this case I am taling about lead guitar workouts, solos, and licks. Thanx in advance! When you play clean you have to focus on playing exactly the right notes. Playing with distortion focusses more on keeping the sounds clean, it helps you to learn the muting. If the stuff you wanna learn is with distortion, I recommend maxing your gain, as it will be alot harder to avoid unwanted noise. Either way I am definitely agreeing with the others; both.
