I recently bought MSI StarCam Clip II, it works fine, has auto-focus, nice picture quality, built in mic... I use it for talking. I suppose it can be used for recording.

Quickcam 9000 can be a very good solution for some basic recordings and video chat.

Regarding the other problem, you need a video editor. Movie Maker comes free with Windows, and it can serve the purpose, but I really recommend Sony Vegas Movie Studio. It's cheap (~55$), and much better than Movie Maker. It is non linear editing software, which means you can have several tracks (layers) of video in one project, while Movie Maker is linear and has only one video track in timeline that you can use.

When I record I usually record Video in Vegas, and record audio in DAW. Then I sync video and audio files together in Vegas. It helps greatly if you have somekind of audio information on the video file, so you can sync the files using the audio peaks. If you cannot record some kind of audio with that Webcam, you can use a movie "clap" method. Simply strum the strings in the begginning of the video and then you have a sync point.

Quickcam 9000 or the Sphere AF are great! As long as you turn off all the automatic lightning options and such (as that will drastically improve your frame-rate).

I have the logitech 9000- but if im recording a longer clip the audio and video go outof sync- im guessing this is because the webcam is dropping so many frames. Apart from that its a tidy piece of gear. Im using a toshiba camileo h10 for my video stuff now- which was cheap and awesome quality!

From what I've read from the people who write the Linux Drivers for those Logitech Webcams is that they are horrible. That's a nice example: http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#footnote-1 a firmware bug that makes timing unstable. wink.gif I would probably either buy a cheap webcam like the logitech E3500 or a proper video camera.

Generally for videos you may want to think about a used miniDV camcorder as well...They transfer files via firewire to PC....Any camcorder will give you much better results then webcams...and if you search you can find some cheap ones (older models - doesn't matter!)..

Regarding a webcam , Quickcam 9000 should be a pretty good solution.

Hmmm...

Yeah a camcorder would be better quality and still useable for other things I guess, might be the way to go. By fire wire do you mean USB connection?

Firewire is not the same as USB. Most DV camcorders use that connection so check that you have it if you choose to go that route!. Hard drive cams on the other hand usually work with USB 2.

I would say that the Quickcam 9000 is a very good, cheap solution, which can give great results if used correctly.

Here is what I get out of it:

First video is recorded at 2 megapixel with logitech quick cam recorder with logitech cam mic, the second is recorded through my Emu soundcard, but still with the same program.

another 9000 user here.

But for guitar playing vids I use my miniDV cam. No sync issues there.

keep in mind when using a miniDV cam for a webcam, the miniDV cam doesnt need a tape or anything in it. Really it doesnt even need to have that entire mechanism. Maybe you can find an older busted one for cheap?

Man that looks really good! I just got one of these and really want to get things setup right. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

Why the 2 megapixel setting vs one of the others like VGA640x480? My first attempt at a video was VGA640x480 and things were a little lagy.

When I try to record my guitar sound with the built in mic all I get is clipping, pops and other garbage. Since the software updated itself I noticed that the options for Echo cancelling and things like that are gone. Could this be causing the problem? Should I try to reinstall?

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato

Not sure I can answer your questions, I'm afraid. I just reinstalled everything (on my computer), and whenever I do that it seems to work fine. Of course you have to turn "Right Light" off, and I usually turn all other settings under the Right Light settings off. That seems to do the trick for me.

From what I've read it does take a somewhat powerful computer to do those very large videos, but I'm not sure about that. VGA640x480 does seem a bit more smooth here though.

How are the settings above 640x480 for you?
