You will need a DAW to record. Reaper, Cubase, Sonar, well there are many out there.
Some POD product is probably the easiest to get started with regarding connecting your guitar to the PC, all you need is a guitar and a PC with USB and you're ready to go.
You also have software amp simulators like Amplitube, Guitar Rig and so forth... But then you need a soundcard with a line in for instrument, or a mixer/box to get the enhance the signal into the soundcard.

I would recommend Toneport ux1 or ux2 (newer versions of it are called POD studio ux1 etc)...I use UX2 for all my lessons needs. Its a very easy to use device and you can get high quality recordings with it..

You will also need the recording software , I would recommend Reaper. Its very powerful and FREE!

Hope this is helpful! smile.gif

The FastTrack from M-audio is USD 129 (really cheap) and it's external like the TonePort.

Also it comes with some recording software.

do you want to get an amp modeling software for the computer? or just get the sound of your amp.

I used to like my toneport, but not so much since i got my new amp...you can get an instrument mic+stand+connections for less than $150 (thats iff you want to capture your amps sound)

if you want to just record and dont care about your amps sound..go for the toneports.

*****a side question....do different toneport models have different sound capturing quality? i use the cheapest toneport...does that mean that i get less quality..or is the price and model differences in the features (like extra inputs)??

For 100-250e you really have choice mate. It depends what you really need. If you wanna record only your guitar, you can buy even POD Studio GX. But sometimes you will wanna record something with the microphone as well, so a mic preamp and additional channel can work great too. This is why I recommend POD Studio UX1. POD Studio UX2 is a good choice as well, but it can record only 2 channels of audio, so it's basically the same as UX1, except for some minor added features like VU meter, footswitch inputs, and phantom power for condenser microphones.
With all 3 devices you get software modelers called "Gearbox" or "POD Farm". Both are the same except POD Farm is newer and still lacks some options, but it has better graphic interface than Gearbox.

In the price range of POD Studio UX2 (200$) there are some interesting solutions:

Guitar Rig Session. Has a more quality hardware then POD Studio devices (Cirrus Logic converters). Also you get Guitar Rig XE, Steinberg Cubase Le 4, Kore Player and the Kore Soundpack "Pop Drums" for FREE.

The best solution in my opinion would be to get EMU 0404 USB interface. It's an entry level sound card for audio production from EMU, but in a professional category. It has a lot better hardware then POD Studio or Guitar Rig Session. It also includes great software bundle for FREE:
Cakewalk SONAR LE, Steinberg Cubase LE, Ableton Live Lite 4 for E-MU Systems, Steinberg WaveLab Lite, BIAS Peak Express 5, Celemony Melodyne essential, K Multimedia Amplitube LE - Guitar Amp & FX Modeling Plug-In, SFX Machine LT - Audio Multi-effects Plug-in, E-MU Proteus VX Software Sound Module (Windows)
