It comes with lot of playing and practicing.
As one guy said once,it's not about how many years you've been playing but how many hours. Good thing is to find some bend,school mates or som,jamming will help for sure. If nothing ,just take some backing tracks and play over it,you'll come up with something nice.

Also you should improvise at a slow tempo to learn wich notes sound good in a combination. If you play fast runs you won't get the feeling for the notes so fast.
For me it helps to listen to a songs wich styley i like before i jam around so i can put a bit of the songs feelings into the improvisation, this really helped to make my improvisations sound better

It takes a LONG time and ALOT of practice. Improvise inside scales, make/learn new licks EVERY DAY!

I practice all the time i can spend on it. if i'm tired of practicing excercises i jam around a bit. But i could train one single exercise for about an hour without getting tired of it.
In my opinion it's all about motivation. I want to become as good as possible as long as i have the time for it. There is nothing in life that i want more. That is the reason why i can play the whole day long without getting tired of it. I think you could use the jam with your friend as a good motivation for yourself. If you really want to become better as your friend, you won't get tired of playing so fast. Fabian

Just focus on practicing and never look at the watch!! It's waste of time.

I haven't heard of that one. I've been dieing to see the Sexual Harrassment Panda episode! Anyway, I also found myself stuck with improvisation. I would take a simple backing track and try to improv over it, and that has helped me greatly
