Help With Improvisation And Soloing?

What seems pretty hard for me is to be able to, for example, skip a string or jump up or down a few frets, to go out of the standard boxes and scales and play some "real" licks and not just 1-3-4, 4-2-1, etc... Perhaps, what really helps me is to sing what I want to play. It's often easier to have a nice lick in your head and the trick is to instantly translate it on the guitar (I am completely unable to do that now ). But well, that's not improvising anymore I guess. It's composing. One said, you shall not improvise, but always compose. David, could you please give some names of players who are good at improvising ?
