Being good in improvisation needs far more than adding major pentatonic in use.

Listen to great improv players and use you ears to pick up their licks and note which chords they work over.
After doing that for a while, you'll connect some dots in your own playing...

Learn the chords. Your soloing/improvising is a direct reflection of your harmony/chordal knowledge.

I really like impro and soloing. What seems pretty hard for me is to be able to, for example, skip a string or jump up or down a few frets, to go out of the standard boxes and scales and play some "real" licks and not just 1-3-4, 4-2-1, etc...

Perhaps, what really helps me is to sing what I want to play. It's often easier to have a nice lick in your head and the trick is to instantly translate it on the guitar (I am completely unable to do that now wink.gif).

But well, that's not improvising anymore I guess. It's composing. tongue.gif
One said, you shall not improvise, but always compose. tongue.gif

David, could you please give some names of players who are good at improvising ? smile.gif

Improvising should be some sort of composing "in a walk". smile.gif
