I don't think a Bigsby was designed for doing a lot of major bending/whammy bar. One thing that might help though is to make sure that the strings aren't binding at either end - nut and bar.
Personally I'd avoid taking off the bigsby if you can as it may devalue your guitar if you fit another that doesn't have the Gretch type vibe. Although you could always refit it at a later date provided you don't do any major surgery to the Gretch . Robin posted a link to a company that make vibratos for Gibson LPs a while back that might be a solution for you. Can't remember the name but if you search on Robin you should be able to find the link. Or Robin might notice the post and re-link it. ahhh i think it maybe nut/bridge/saddle slippage... First time a guitar of mine has had this problem but i beleive i may need some guitar lube lol.
