Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Funky Satch by Piotr Kaczor

Ok,I'm kinda reluctant with this...it could be a lot better.Especially the tone. Would like some feedback on tone here apart from technique etc! I get that the sound should really come from dynamics, been trying them but the setup could be better too. I decided not to use distortion pedal(screamer),delay and reverb.I'ts only amp, here's the setup https://app.box.com/s/7jcsarh9gqsymasmg0pi4rcjvt6cvb9f

Wow, that was really good.

The opening chord riff could be a bit clearer, especially the chords around 0:17.

In terms of dynamics, I think you could experiment with creating more pick dynamics.. picking harder in certain places, maybe getting a semi pinch harmonic in other places. Your playing is very clean and precise but the pick attack doesn't vary much. So my suggestion would be to try to get more variation in your pick attack to create more variety in your playing.

Your tone choice was good. Just enough gain to be crunchy and sustained without going overboard. If anything, it maybe deserved a tiny amount of reverb or even delay, just to give it a bit more life. But other than that, no problems with it smile.gif

Hi mate, this is a great lesson to work on groove and dynamics.

I think that your tone could be a bit cleaner to be able to get more dynamics while you play. The lack is dynamics is related to tone but also to pick intensities. The original lesson includes softer and harder picking depending the the note that the instructor is playing to give the tune more life and feeling. So it's a combination of both tone and playing. Talking about the EQ, I think that your tone could be have more presence or treble to be more defined.

So work on dynamics, and also as Ben said on the first riff. wink.gif

First of all You made a good decission to go through some tone experiments. At the beginning it's hard to focus on too many tone aspects. My tip would be to start from finding an amp and it's eq settings that give You most objective dynamics translation. Then You can use a Low Pass Filter (usually most of the DAW's can give You this option in it's regular EQ section) and experiment with a cut off point. LPF is a very powerful tool.

I see many good things about the tone You present in this take. It's raw and very demanding. It's exposes a lot of details and makes a lot of technique issues to be visible much easier. I would keep that setting for a practice routines. I think it will help You. Of course Your final tone doesn't have to be like that but it's surely worth something in an educational meaning smile.gif
