Well I'm back, let's hope this year is better. I hope yesterday was a good omen, I won £50 in the bingo, I never play it really but it's kind of a new year tradition.
I hope you're new year's celebrations went well. Cheers Gab -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I don't know if you read the post above this one but please do.
Here is a little jam I did based around Todd's Quick Licks 8. I can hear that some of the bends are off, and that is something i am working on. I should have another REC take for the Phil Collen lesson at the weekend. https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/ditty Another one, just messing around, left mistakes in, maybe you can hear what I'm trying to do and why I don't pull it off. I'm just getting back into end of session jamming so don't expect miracles https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/just-messin This post has been edited by Phil66: Jan 3 2018, 09:53 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil! I hope you have a great 2018! It seems that you've started it with good luck. I had a great time with my family, thanks.
Great to see you working on improvisation. The first thing that comes to mind when listening to your improv is that you need to work on some more rhythm variations. I've shared some interesting stuff about this: Here and HERE -------------------- My lessons

Wow thanks Gab,
I watched the videos, it ate into my practise time but was very valuable, I will watch them again at the weekend and your Improv course looks very interesting but a bit too much to look at tonight, I will pick away at it. Thanks Gab,
I've been working hard on my bending to pitch, please ignore the tone, I made some changes that I didn't really like but ran out of time to set it back to how it was. Do you ever find that sometimes, the tone just doesn't come the same as the day before, even though every setting is the same???? Anyway, here is just the solo from the Phil Collen lesson. Let me know what you think please. https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/collen-solo Thanks -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil,
I can hear improvements in your bending technique. Well done! About the tone, it's weird if you are using an amp emulator. Real amps usually sound different, but not digital machines. This could be related to your guitar, cable, or any soundcard setting. -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
I'm still working hard on bending to pitch. I am noticing more when I go sharp than when I go flat for some reason but I am getting better. I bought a Boss TU3 pedal as it has a bypass output so I can check my accuracy as I'm playing without losing my sound, obviously I will NOT use it in REC takes as that wouldn't be right and would defeat the object of REC. I'm struggling to keep the low E string quiet during the chord changes in the Collen piece but I'll find a way. Just so you can see that I am working hard on the bends, see the picture below. Can you see anything wrong with the position of the string in relation to the finger tips? Cheers Gab -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hello Gab,
I don't think my fingers will hold out much more, they are going to split, the blisters will fall off very soon I do have one question, why does it feel like I have to put more physical effort in bending a whole tone on the high E on the 12th fret than I do on the B on the 12th fret? I wish I had a way of measuring it, it feels like about 50% more force. I even checked that the E was the thinnest string but they we correct, I used a micrometer. Could it just be down to effective pressure like elephants foot stilleto heel syndrome? Cheers buddy. UPDATE Jan 12th: It's suddenly got a bit easier, I think it was the combination of the thinner string, the soreness of the finger tips and muscle strength. It seems to take more force with a thinner string because you have to press down a little bit harder to prevent it from slipper. Take it to the extreme, look how easy the wound strings are to bend. What are your thoughts? Cheers Phil This post has been edited by Phil66: Jan 12 2018, 08:35 AM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil,
Are you using other fingers to help the one that is bending? What string gauge are you using? -------------------- My lessons

I'm using three fingers, the three between the middle and the thumb. I don't think I have the finger strength to do a more than a whole tone bend on the high E in that area but on the B string I can easily do a tone and a half. I'm using 10s, I used to use 9s but got a big free box of 10s from Fender when I had all that problem with my truss rod on the Baja Tele. I do like 10s
Cheers UPDATE 11th Jan: It is sudden;y a bit easier, I even went sharp at one point. I think it is a combination of the thinner string, fingertip soreness and muscle strength. I think thinner strings need more pressure towards the fret to prevent them from slipping. Take it to the other end, look how easy it is to bend the wound strings. I may be wrong, it might be poor technique.. What do you think? Hi Phil,
I think that it's a combination of the strings gauge, guitar action, fingers strengh and technique. As always, it's just a matter of time so you would be abe to bend even 012 string or 013 on an uncomfortable high action guitar with practice. The secret as always is diary practice, nothing more than that. There is a cool Guthrie video where he shows many different bends, and the same from Doug Aldrich. Did I share them with you? -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
Ca you watch this video please. You may find it a little bit boring but please analyse my bending technique. You will see what I was talking about before when I said I was choking the string. It rings out until I release the bend then it dies, sometimes it doesn't but I can't see what I'm doing different. It's not the right hand causing it, I've checked that. Thank you for taking the time to do this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYWbWHWiiPg -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil, some things that come to mind while watching your video:
- You are doing the bend more form your fingers than your wrist. Remember that Satriani's video where he shows clearly how to make the movement from the wrist. - You are having muting problems. - The closer string low string should be muted with the tip of your first finger and we usually do when soloing. - The higher strings should be muter with the bare of your first finger. - The other lower string should be muted with the palm of your right hand. Let me know if everything makes sense. -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
It does make sense, it looks like I need to go back to the drawing board and start again. Can you see what is happening when the note stops just as I start to release the bend? The issue with the right hand muting was more because I was removing my right hand to prove to myself that it wasn't the right hand killing the bent note just as I release the bend. I'll work on this for a few days, I think it's currently my worst technique along with my poor pitch recognition. From what I can see here, it seems that you are not keeping the fret correctly pressed when releasing the string. You lose pressure and that's why your string mutes.

Hello Gab, (There was an update in the post above, it's not a big deal though if you're too busy )
I'm trying to get this bending sussed out. I'll be posting regular vids if that's ok because I want to get the technique right, the ear will follow. I think it easier to force technique than the ear, the ear has to develop itself in time don't you think? The main reason for posting is I want to correct any poor form before it gets established, I'm already struggling to break the "too much finger movement" issue so i don't want to add to it. How does this look? The pitches aren't brilliant but as I said, I need to get the mechanics right first and develop my ear alongside that process. I think I'm still using too much finger movement but it doesn't seem natural at the moment to use all wrist rotation. I also find that my finger tips grab the lower strings, I can't control that at the moment either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gbTcB1XpG8 Guthrie seem to use a fair bit of finger here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWWvTIKg3Vo Cheers Gab -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil,
I can note improvements in your bending now. There are some times when the note keeps ringing and that movement seems much better now. I'm watching Guthrie's video and I note that most of his movement is focused on the wrist. His technique looks perfect so it's good for you to see his bending and try to emulate his movements. There are some other cool vids by him talking about bending, go for them. -------------------- My lessons
