Here is the test video from this morning. THis is just a test of sync and quality, is it good enough for what we are doing. I can zoom in if that helps. Position my camera better, etc....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cihzvn4nYTc

I'm getting confused.... What you are writing doesnt match the tab above it.

Do you mean this?

----8---7---6---5--------7---6---5-----------6---5--------------5------------------------
-----------------------8--------------8---7-----------8---7---6--------8---7---6---5-----
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Keeping all 4 fingers down at all times?

Np man, my tab writing there was actually showing which notes to play, your tab writing above shows the finger positions, the problem was there, Danilo wrote in GP file the actual finger positions, thats why GP plays it oddly because it thinks these are the tabs for the playing....

Keep your fingers down, thats correct. And what you are gonna do is:

position 1:

|-1-|-2-|-3-|-4-|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
5th
fret
(1-2-3-4 are your fingers and the frets are 5-6-7-8)
Here you pick the E string. (you hear 8th fret on E string here)

So the tab must be:
E--8--
B-----
G-----
D-----
A-----
E-----

than move your pinky to upper string while keeping the index, middle, ring fingers down

position 2:

|-1-|-2-|-3-|---|
|---|---|---|-4-|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
5th
fret
Pick the E string again (you hear 7th fret of E string)

so the tab becomes:

E--8--7---
B---------
G---------
D---------
A---------
E---------

now move your ring finger next to the pinky, while keeping index, middle and pinky down

position 3:

|-1-|-2-|---|---|
|---|---|-3-|-4-|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
5th
fret
Pick the E string again (you hear 6th of E string)

so the tab becomes:

E--8--7--6--
B-----------
G-----------
D-----------
A-----------
E-----------

now move your middle finger next to the ring, while keeping index, ring and pinky down

position 3:

|-1-|---|---|---|
|---|-2-|-3-|-4-|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
5th
fret
Pick the E string again (you hear here 5th fret on E string)

so the tab becomes:

E--8--7--6--5--
B--------------
G--------------
D--------------
A--------------
E--------------

then move your index next to others while keeping all the others down.

position 3:

|---|---|---|---|
|-1-|-2-|-3-|-4-|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
5th
fret
Here you pick the B string again (you hear here 8th fret on B string)

so the tab becomes:

E--8--7--6--5-----
B--------------8--
G-----------------
D-----------------
A-----------------
E-----------------

and repeat this until you reach the lower E string...

there you'll have a position like this:

|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|---|---|---|---|
|-1-|-2-|-3-|-4-|

and tab of total exercise (the notes that you hear) would be:

-8-7-6-5-----------------------------------------
---------8-7-6-5---------------------------------
-----------------8-7-6-5-------------------------
-------------------------8-7-6-5-----------------
---------------------------------8-7-6-5---------
-----------------------------------------8-7-6-5-

So what we are going to do here is,

1- Getting to the upper strings leading with pinky and picking the lower string (the string you move your fingers FROM) until we are all the way up,
2- Getting to the lower strings leading with pinky and picking the upper string until we are all the way down,
3- Getting to the upper strings leading with index and picking the upper string(the string you move your fingers TO) until we are all the way up,
4- And finally getting to the lower strings leading with index and picking the upper string until we all the way down...

That is to say, 1st exercise is the one above that I described.
in the 2nd exercise, you start from the last position of 1st exercise, you do the same but you get form lower E to A by starting with the pinky and picking the 7th fret on E string etc.
In the 3rd exercise you start with the first position of the 1st exercise but you start with your index not your pinky and you pick the B string, the string that you actually move your fingers to. And you go all the way up...
In the 4th exercise you start with the last position of the 3rd exercise, and you start with your index and you move it to the A string and pick that string.

Drop me a line when you got this ok?

Later biggrin.gif

and a little add,

video sync is ok, I see clearly what you are doing there, just you may add some lights facing you for a better fps I guess. But in any case, that is ok biggrin.gif

Video is pretty much ok Jeremy, you can add a little light for a better fps but I can see enough.

By the way you are doing great in Losfer, I am sure you will do better now that this video agony is solved! Some little mistakes but they will get better as long as you keep working on it.

Its harder to play it slower I think.

I want to rush it back to speed.

That and the video this morning was WAY RUSHED. My car was runnning, I was late for leaving to work, just trying to get the damn video fixed....

Its -9 degrees F here today by the way.

What kind of weather do you have on that side of the globe?

No problem man, I'll check what you will have tonight, I am sure it will be better!

Well its cold here too, not -9F (lets see this must be -9-32=-41/180*100= -22 C!!!) man!! thats way too cold!!! Its around 9C here, it makes 48 F I think. But there is a lot of humidity here, you feel like its colder biggrin.gif So there must be snow everywhere!!!

Ah, If it gets that cold here, it snows like hell! biggrin.gif

We've got about 9 inches laying around right now....

I'm not a real fan of winter either....

I'll be putting in another 75min tonight. Same as last night.

15min strumming (50bpm - This will be my last without adding the Arpeggios in)
15min finger independence (80bpm, I'll go all the way thru the 1 finger exercise)
15min string skipping (whatever speed I can do it corrrectly at)
15min Losfer Words (from beginning thru 1:45)
15min Sanitarium (solo 1 - from beginning thru 1:06 if possible, 15min isn’t much time, its tough for me to even memorize the part in that time)

I am familiar with that method, or one very similar. I took some lessons from a different site that is no longer running... Can't remember the name at the moment. They did a similar thing. There were 5, 2-string shapes that you used in different combinations to get all 7 modes.

For now I'm gonna stick with what we have. Thats gonna take a good amount of time as is.

My progress tonight.

Strumming is getting a bit better. Still not near where it should be, and no arpeggios yet....

Finger Independence. Am I doing it right?

String Skipping - I think this went ok....

Losfer Words - A bit more done. The part after solo 1 is monotonous as hell and I get lost in the arrangement....

Sanitarium - A little bit more down. And yeah, that part is too fast for me tonight. And most nights..... I am speed challenged by slow parts. And it sucks.....

Wednesday night I have other plans so I wont be doing anything else til Thursday night.

Looking forward to comments here.

One word. Awesome. You are going really great.

Now some comments:

1-In strumming exercise, you nailed the finger positions, now for the next training, when you do strumming alone, I want you to upstrum (I dont know if there is such a word) the chords that are strummed with a upstroke on original video. And you can start to play arpeggios if you feel you are ready. And also there are some timing issues, you tend to strum faster, your starting points are a la tempo but duration of strums shall be constant.

2-Finger Independence exercise was great. You see while keeping you fingers down, it becames quite a challenge, but you got this right, for the next session, I want you to use this as a warm up exercise, and try to nail the next finger independence exercise.

3-For the string skipping exercise, I recommend you to play it along the metronome, and play it a little slower because you see there are some little errors. And also try to work your way on different patterns too. On the video you are doing the 1-3-4 (index-ring-pinky) version there is also 1-2-4 and 1-2-4wide versions to it(index-middle-pinky) (index-middle-pinky wide ) you should try them also next time. And tell Juliette I said hi! smile.gif

4-Losfer words are ok, rhythm parts nailed, solo is correct. You play it on time, There are still some little timing issues but you will eradicate them in time as you get used to playing.

5-Sanitorium solo was without problem until the fast part. The only way you can nail this is to play this part and this part only along with a slower metronome. Slow down the metronome until you play it without even a little mistake. Then play it like a 50 times. Then increase the tempo gradually. Increase it until you make a mistake. When you do that pull the tempo back to the previous one play it like 20 times, then continue to increase it until you reach the original tempo. Thats the only way to play that faster parts. And alternate pick at all times. The only thing you should economy pick on this solo is the sweepy part before the fast part. Other than that you should alternate pick everything.

You are doing great. You lack some bending and vibrato techniques, but we will add them in time.

Good job mate and Cheers

Can

and a little addendum, you may want to shorten your strap a little to reach that lower strings, I know that doesnt look as cool as it would be but our primary purpose is to play guitar better biggrin.gif

Not sure what this means.

This morning I worked on this some before work. I noticed that I have themost trouble going to G, F and D. So I went GFGFGFGFGFGFGFGFGF for while. Then FDFDFDFDFDFDFDFDFDFDFD for a while etc.... I think that helped.

There is still parts of Finger Independence I that I havent done. Like all the 2 finger parts... I need to do that too before going to Finger Independence II right? Should I be working towards any particular bpm here?

QUOTE
String Skipping - And also try to work your way on different patterns too. On the video you are doing the 1-3-4 (index-ring-pinky) version there is also 1-2-4 and 1-2-4wide versions to it(index-middle-pinky) (index-middle-pinky wide ) you should try them also next time.
I need to watch the video I guess. I just printed the tab and was playing it however felt comfortable. I wasnt paying attention to what fingers I used.

QUOTE
4-Losfer words are ok, rhythm parts nailed, solo is correct. You play it on time, There are still some little timing issues but you will eradicate them in time as you get used to playing.
Thanks. This is feeling good. THe parts after that first solo are difficult to count out. Its an odd arrangement thing, instrumental tunes are hard to follow at times.... But thats the part I am working on next.

QUOTE
5-Sanitorium solo was without problem until the fast part.
Right. I'll use the GP file and slow it down. I've been playing with the cd. Its tough using a metronome for me on this one cuz I find it hard to follow the beat on solos. I do it all by feel and just try to get it to match the cd. Rather than knowing where the notes fall with the beats. This solo in particular is tough to hear against the beat while playing it. Does this make sense? I need to spend some time listening to the beat and seeing what notes fall where. Then I can tap my foot along with it. That will help. It will also allow me to play it with a metronome.

Slowing down GP files doesnt always help since it can get kinda "skippy" when you slow them down. Know what I mean?

I have been alternate picking it all. To my knowledge anyway... I am used to alternate picking all of the time anyway. Am I not alternate picking it? Gonna look at the video again.... I thought I was.

Thanks Can!!!

Yeah buddy you did the right thing. That will improve your transitions for sure.

Yeah you should do them to in your warm up exercises, but I dont think you will have some problems about it, because they are nearly the same.. And you wont do anything tonight, so for the Thursday night you shall work a little longer smile.gif
Try the finger independence 2, if it feels comfortable, take a video of it. If not, keep practicing until the next session. Ok?
There is no bpm target here, as you play these exercises speed will come as a natural result but its not a target. Just play it on bpm where you feel comfortable.

QUOTE

Your fingerings are correct here, but I was saying there is other versions of this exercise, one using:
-5-6-8- in place of 5-7-8- for tabs and your index middle pinky for fingers and
-5-7-9 for tabs and your index middle pinky in a wide position...

You are correct about instrumental tunes, they tend to be more complex, but this is an advantage, when you get to play an instrumental song you play lots of different licks, as you were playing 5 non instrumental tunes... smile.gif

Well tapping your feet sometimes help, sometimes not. You tend to listen to your to your feet, but who guaranties that you feet is tapping to the tempo? Well I dont know, if it works for you you do that way but imo, you should directly try to follow the metronome. That will be a little hard at first but you'll get used to it eventually.
QUOTE

Yes you are correct, and I must add that it is always harder to keep the tempo at a slower metronome because duration between beats gets wider thus there is more time for you to skip the beat. There is one solution to that, if you are working only with metronome you may double it, and pick every other beat. Or if you play with GP you may change the time signiture to beat also half beats. that means changing the 4/4 for 8/8, they are exactly the same on timingwise but 8/8 also hits the half beats. Try it if you think it will ease your burden. But eventually one day you'll need to play 4/4 on a very slow metronome, so the call is yours...

No you are alternate picking it. All of it. And I want to add here that you are a great student at that point, you do everything I tell you to do exactly the way I tell you, you immediately apply the suggestions I really appreciate that. The thing I was talking about is the fast lick, I said even if it feels easier to play it legato you should alternate pick it. You didnt do something wrong buddy try to keep it this way smile.gif

You are welcome mate, you are doing great, as you can feel it your improvement on these exercise in one week (in few days is more accurate) is just amazing. This way I am assured that we will achieve our goals as soon as possible.

I'm getting confused with the finger independence thing.... I havent even done half of the Finger Independence I exercise. You want me to stop and go to II instead? Or should I move on to the 2 finger part of FI-I?

Sorry if I am confusing you.

No buddy, you are not biggrin.gif

I was merely saying that, I dont think you will have problems with the other half, surely you will do it, play the both halfs for the next session, and if you have time and energy try to start Finger Independence II too.

I hope thats ok biggrin.gif

Later

Gotcha.

I dunno, moving 2 alternate fingers like that and keeping all down I have a feeling will be difficult...

But I'll do my best!

Week 1 - Day 4

Here we are.

I can tell that things are improving. And I can tell that they are improving SLOWLY.

But hey, we're 4 days in. And some of this stuff is unlike anything I've ever done. Taking that, and my schedule into consideration and I am happy with it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilJSQxzKkIk

(DAMMIT!!!!!! - My video got hosed!!!!! Last part of Losfer Words and ALL of Sanitarium got jacked up.) I'll be posting another one tomorrow night and I'll watch it all before deleting the files.... GRRRRRRR!!!!!!)

Tomorrow (Friday night) I'll be putting in another hour or so. Then the weekend. I'll get in another 2 hours minimum. That'll end our first week. (since I was out of town last weekend.)

ok... I was pissed and squeezed in another Sanitarium clip. DAMN YOU MOVIE MAKER!!!!!!

(I need Vegas)

I had a couple of beers and got very tired during the editing of the last movie... So this isnt as good....

Hey there bro, It was a nice comeback after a long silence biggrin.gif

Anyway, I couldnt watch you first video, because of a "This video has been removed due to terms of use violation", so movie maker flaws didnt make much of a problem there laugh.gif This is not your fault and no problem, I know you worked hard for that and you will take a better shot tonight... And there comes the second video, I must say, you are getting better and better, yes, the improvement comes slow, but remember you have been practicing for 4 days and around 1-1.5 hours per day, so you are making this improvement after 6 hours of practice max.

So this is great IMO. Ok, how could I say that from only second video?

Well I dont know its that 2 and a half beers but, you play more confidently, you got some vibratos improved, the fast part rocked (3rd video), and you had that right feeling there and also you had 3 takes, you did that persistently, that shows your dedication this alone being a good prove that you'll get what you want. Few timing issues as this is slower than original, I know your fingers want to play it at original speed sometimes, especially where its easier to play and it is normal, just try to follow it, I dont know maybe these little timing problems are the sideeffects of beer biggrin.gif ... You may get your vibratos more wide, but we will do some exercises about that anyway, so you may focus on getting the solo done, or try to improve them also, your call...

I am looking forward to watch your next video, where you'll have all the others to better comment on your progress.

Cya and take care, smile.gif

Can
