Hey All,
Well clearly most everyone on this site is well versed in who the greatest technical players around are. I thought I'd start a topic on some funky players. I'm a huge fan of funk/acid jazz/soul and two of my favorite players are Simon Bartholomew - The Brand New Heavies Rob Harris - Jamiroquai Both of these guys play funk rhythm in the pocket like it's their job (oh wait....). Well anyway, their rhythm and feel are great. Does anyone else know about/like these guys? Does anyone have additional funk/soul players that they're into? _Bryan Edit: Here is a great Jamiroquai vid with Rob Harris on guitar. Great phrasing on lead break at end of song! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLa8CtJG3-U This post has been edited by BMcG: Nov 19 2008, 07:52 PM |

You can check Paul Jackson Jr. early work, he's a guitar legend, and recorded for many famous artists back in the days.

nobody was funkier than Grant Green in his late 60s Bluenote phase. Check out the album "for the funk of it"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqvcR0NFHgc listen to some Kenny Burell or Wes Montgomery and Mr. Benson did some pretty funky stuff to. But really cool funky jazz came from John Scofield: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgyHqJ4U1UE But if you talk of funk guitarists never forgett Nile Rodgers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhAjvYXy7jM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yxTNIi2g14 Ah and I forgot one of the godfathers of Jazz funk Melvin Sparks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8BubiqVi4g This post has been edited by ItsMe: Nov 20 2008, 03:52 PM |

Yeah! Cool! Now we're talkin'. Those are a few of my favorite players. Thanks for the vids. The North Sea one with Scofield and MMW was great.
Grant Green is probably my all time favorite. Here is what I'm told is the only known video of him playing (with Barney Kessel and Kenny Burrell no less!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKW40qCeql8 Also, if you like that organ trio type of sound, theres a new-ish group from the UK, The New Mastersounds, that are cool. Their guitar player Eddie Roberts is great. Check out this clip (he starts soloing a couple minutes in). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8aLuZbnFUk BTW, that Melvin Sparks is KILLIN'! Yes stumbled over the New Mastersounds a while ago. Pretty cool.
I saw Melvin Sparks some years ago live. He still really great. Oh btw. Not really allot of guitar here but I have to spread the word. A friend of mine plays trumpet in that band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QukQKLjoHiw really cool funky stuff and here the band of my friend steffen (Steffen Waltenberger Band). It'S more easy going funky jazz. The guy that plays trumpet in the band above also plays trumpet in steffens band (there is some talking in german in that video). In the second video they are in the studio and have some fun with the guitars. http://www.artmetropol.tv/index.php?movieid=258 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zzkfFlOfFU |

Wow, that's cool. I love that first video! Hah. Awesome. The piece with the singer in the second was great too.
Here's a trio from the UK called Fast3. They're all Grant Green nuts, and they've been cleaning up at festivals around Europe for a couple years. http://www.myspace.com/fastthree |
