GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ What Is A Good Overdrive Pedal For Metal Leads?

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 12 2008, 03:05 AM

Hello, i would like to know good OD pedal for Iron maiden/Judas priest style leads, i play through a Roland 30X

thanks in advance

I'd recommend a Rat Pro distortion pedal, they're modestly priced and cover a wide range of sounds. Used by a huge array of artists out there.

Another Megadeth fan, perhaps? cool.gif
I second the Tube screamer, but be sure to get the "vintage reissue" (IE the more expensive one) , the tone is better

yeah bro, megadeth is my favorite band, your lucky to have got a pic with Mr. Mustaine biggrin.gif , i met him at a gigantour signing, but i got all nervous and forgot how to speak, so i couldn't say hi or anything dry.gif , but i met J.Lo and Glen and they were very nice

question about the tube screamer, will it still work on a solid state amp?, sorry ifts a dumb question, im new to OD pedals since my old digital amp did that itself

also, is it this one? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-TS808-Vintage-Tube-Screamer-Reissue-102547361-i1124276.gc

OD pedals will work on Solid State, but it will work much better with tube amps. OD's were invented to push tubes so yeah haha. I use a cheap FAB pedal, and it works fine for my Crate Solid State. I play Droning Doom though so I need an over staturated kind of distortion.

My two faves are the Ibanez Tube Screamer and The Guv'nor 2 from Marshall.

Thanks for the recommendations guys : )

sorry another noob question, but how do OD pedals work?, if i have my amp on a high gain setting and want to do a lead, is it as simple as pressing the button, or will it override the high gain and sound bad?

Posted by: VinceG Oct 12 2008, 10:40 PM

It will still be high gain, but with a bit more "color" or gain or boost that you will notice.

You may want to determine whether you want an overdrive pedal or a distortion pedal. An OD pedal may not serve you as well with a Cube 30 since it's not a tube amplifier.
Distortion pedals create their own dirty sound and the there are many really nice ones. A few decent distortion pedals include the Boss Metal Zone or ds-1 and Electro Harmonix Metal Muff. These aren't boutique pedals but are quite nice and get you from a light crunch to quite a high gain tone. One that is a bit nicer than these is the new Satchurator pedal, that's a very nice pedal but is a bit more expensive than the others.

I agree with Marcus, Tubescreamer is a very good choice, and also Guv'nor 2 is the pedal of choice for many metalheads I had chance playing with.

In addition to that, I think a good overdrive can come only from the amp, the pedals main function is to boost that overdrive sound.

Posted by: Bogdan Radovic Oct 13 2008, 06:39 PM

Definitely consider the Tubescreamer , so many people use it and will give you what you're looking for...And if you need something just for boosting (to make leads louder) you may want to look into MXR Microamp pedal.

well I only need to a pedal for leads since my rhythm tone doesn't fit my desired lead tone, should I get and OD pedal or a distortion pedal?

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic Oct 14 2008, 10:18 PM

I suggest you consider a smooth overdrive pedal for leads, to boost up your rhythm tone.

Would the Ibanez tube screamer work?

That should work very well !! Also if you need just the volume boost you may consider the mxr micro amp pedal too! smile.gif

Sounds awesome, I will buy that pedal too

Thanks all of you SO much, This board is amazing

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 19 2008, 05:34 PM

I'm sorry, another question

I was thinking of also buying a Boss Metal Zone pedal for a better rhythm sound, would an Ibanez tube screamer sound good over a Metal Zone?

Posted by: VinceG Oct 19 2008, 05:40 PM

I dont like the sound of Boss Metalzone. Its too restrictive or too digital. Even though its a Metal distortion, it has that trebbly awful sound. If I were you, I'd try the Metalmuff. Its the only pedal I use for Metal.

I love my Tube Screamer so much.

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 19 2008, 06:04 PM

I will look into that one, but would a overdrive pedal sound good over a distortion pedal? Are they allowed to be on at the same time?

Posted by: Xuestor Oct 19 2008, 06:08 PM

it will be VERY fuzzy, and create A LOT of feedback problems.

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 19 2008, 06:13 PM

hmm, that's not good, is there any solution to this problem?

thats only if you turn everything up on the OD all the way. Although I like the feedback and fuzz my OD pedal produce, it can also be turned down to be just a standard boost that's quiet and give your sound a nice beefier tone.

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 19 2008, 06:51 PM

So with the proper eq, I can have both a distortion and an overdrive pedal on at once?

Posted by: VinceG Oct 19 2008, 07:30 PM

Yes, of course. I use it all the time.

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 19 2008, 07:34 PM

awesome, thanks

by the way, is this the metal muff you are using?

if you configure the the pedals' EQs right, yeah. You could have your distortion pedal set to teh br00talz, but instead of using your OD to add more gain to the signal, you can turn the gain on the OD down, and have the Level (or whatever) turned up to boost the signal, or make it louder without the extra fuzz and feedback from adding more gain.

if you check out the EHX Metal Muff, like Vince mentioned, you'll find that it might be a distortion pedal, (a dang good one, too) but it has something called a Top Boost, which adds more treble to your sound, so you can play leads while cutting through the mix at the same time. Its kinda like 2 pedals in 1. So i second that you check out the Metal Muff smile.gif

Posted by: VinceG Oct 19 2008, 07:41 PM

thats my baby! Be sure to try both out first. What sounds good to me may not be good to you smile.gif

I dont like the top boost though. I hate over the top treble. That's why I stick to my OD pedal to cut through the mix no problem while still retaining a nice beefy over driven tone that the top boost doesnt deliver smile.gif. Its by all means a great pedal so don't hesitate.

Keeley modded Ibanez Tubescreamer, perfect smile.gif

Posted by: megadeth1117 Oct 19 2008, 07:47 PM

Cool, I'll be sure to check out some pedals cause its my 15th bday soon and I'll be able to get like 2 or 3

Thanks for all the help : )

I didn`t quite like the original Metal muff, too many knobs:P
But the pocket metal muff was awesome!

Had a very nice and tight metal distortion, even when i tuned to C. Sounded badass. And it`S cheap, only 900 NOK in Norway. And Norway is a pretty expensive country, most pedals are 1000+
