GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ What Was Your First Guitar?

Posted by: ZakkWylde Jun 8 2009, 12:37 AM

What was the very first guitar you owned? On which guitar did you learn to fret your first chord?

Post the guitar you have started to play on! Some may still have it or play on it but I guess it's interesting to hear what started our instructors' guitar career...

I was so stubborn and wouldn't let anybody tell me otherwise so I bought this one from my summer-job-money:

A low end Jackson with a VERY BAD FLoyd Rose copy tremolo.
Let's just say: V-body+Tremolo+Bad setup= not the best starter guitar to choose^^

It sounded fine but the tremolo was driving me crazy, it would go out of tune by just looking at it^^ I sold it as soon as I could afford a Epi Les Paul...

My first guitar (acoustic one) was broken years back
but I still have my old Ibanez which was my first electric guitar,
I'll try to make few shots. smile.gif

This is me playing my first guitar the first day I got it, and that's probably the only picture I have of it. That's only a bit more than 2.5 years ago though, but if feels like ages ago. Probably one of the happiest days of my live and getting a guitar is definetly the best decision I ever made. It's a Squire Showmaster. Insanely cheap and not very great, but still decent for starting out with.

Wow, this is unbelievable. I went to search for the first guitar I ever owned (I sold it on eBay) and it's been put up on someone else's web site. Those are my original pics and text from the eBay auction.

It was old acoustic guitar, don't have any shots atm, but will get it when I go to my sisters place, she is keeping it now smile.gif

Posted by: Praetorian Jun 8 2009, 01:26 AM

My first guitar ever was a Terminator by Synsonics! It had a built in speaker right in the body. I got it when I was about 13 or 14. I actually used it for the first few months I was on this site! I gave it to a woman I work with so her daughter could have something to play.

I've searched, but cannot find.. sad.gif My first guitar was a 70's model EVH replica made by Memphis. My grandfather bought it for me in the early 80's from a pawn shop that I re-pawned shortly after.. The seed was planted then and until a year and a half or so ago, started to grow.. smile.gif What I wouldn't do now to go back and play that thing daily!! wink.gif

Posted by: wrk Jun 8 2009, 07:37 AM

The first guitar was a classical guitar my parents had.
My first electric guitar was a Westone Pantera which i loved and played for years. I have kept this one until it burned 2004 in a house fire ... RIP

Not an original photo, but same color and setup ..

I bought a black Squier '51.. It's a nice, cheap and unique starter guitar, but looking back I would probably have chosen something else

Posted by: Keilnoth Jun 8 2009, 08:31 AM

My first guitar was a no name which looked like a Fender. I've paid it $200 with an amp. So crappy, I used it for 3 months only and then dumped it and bought an Ibanez. smile.gif

Posted by: audiopaal Jun 8 2009, 09:01 AM

My first "guitar" was a Fender Squier Stratocaster smile.gif
I don't have any pics I'm afraid..

A friend of mine has it now though, but I think it's barely playable smile.gif

An Epiphone acoustic on and later a maya strat model

Posted by: Velvet Roger Jun 8 2009, 09:58 AM

My first guitar was an incredibly cheap copy of a stratocaster in 1992 (can't remember the actual brand) + an even cheaper transistor amp, which I both sold to the store when I bought my Ibanez RG770/Marshall JMC900 combo in 1993.

I have to look at my parents home to find some pictures though tongue.gif

I bought my first guitar when I was 16, a spanish classical guitar. Learnt the basic open chords & sang Springsteen songs with it smile.gif
I still have it.

One year later I got my first electric, a Fender telecaster thinline '69 reissue. I sold that one this year. Never really liked it! laugh.gif

Posted by: Vasilije Vukmirovic Jun 8 2009, 03:35 PM

Oh, I borrowed my first guitar from one guy, it was classical guitar really nice one, after I gave it back, I borrowed another classical from a cousin smile.gif
Basically, after 1.5 years I bought my first guitar, electrical guitar Jolana, I payed it about 20 euros, really cheap one, but I was happy as little child! smile.gif

One of those. I no longer have any parts of it, which is a little sad. I bought a very very very cheap ibanez AX-something to replace it, but even that instrument is a decoration in my mother's living room back in Philadelphia.

The Westbury was surprisingly nice. It stayed in tune just fine, the neck was quick, the action low. The pickups were a little scary and microphonic. I even yelled into them (for the distortion and digital delay) as part of the intro of one of our songs we performed in my crappy highschool basement rock band.

I`ve searched high n low on the internet for pictures of my first guitar, it was my cousins who is 12 years older than me and gave it to me when I was about 12, I have no idea of the make, it looked hideous but I guess it served its purpose, I have no idea what happened to it since! laugh.gif

This isnt the exact guitar but it looked more or less the same as the guitar at the end on the right

Posted by: Sensible Jones Jun 8 2009, 04:26 PM

My first electric was a Westone Raider II!! RAWK ON!!!!

It was the model on the right with the twin Pickups and Tremolo but in the Silver and Black Sparkle Finish!!!
Nice!!!

Mine was a cheap strat shaped guitar, brandname "Riverstring" tongue.gif
It was decent as a beginner guitar but went out of tune alot.
After playing it 4 months i sold it to a friend who i made start playing guitar, and he still plays it biggrin.gif

I dont have a real photo of it but this is the picture from the shop.
Before i sold it i planned to get a custom pickguard for it (i hated the white one on the blue guitar), it would have looked awesome but then i was getting another guitar and selling this so i never did it.
the second pic is a quick preview i made back then, for how it would look cool.gif

Great thread to see what some of the more experienced players started with smile.gif
My first guitar is the one in my signature... and ESP LTD Viper 100FM... I think it has served me pretty well so far as a started, and I am still learning a lot. I like that its a very heavy guitar, I've gone to my local Guitar Center and played around with some other guitars, and they feel like a sheet a paper in my hands when compared to my current guitar.. It is easily like 2 or 3 times heavier than other guitars I've picked up.. I kind of like it that way.
I am saving up for a Fender American Strat, hopefully I will get it sometime next year, I only put aside like $10 a week for it in a savings I made just for that purpose lol. By then, I will definitely be a much better guitar player and deserving of it smile.gif haha

My first was a Japanese made guitar branded with the name Taro for import into Canada. It was a Gibson SG copy. I sold it when I was 16 to buy drums. I don't think it was very good, but it may have been. Taro manufactured and imported guitars into Canada in the 70's. Mine was Angus Young red. I remember, my brother had a Black body with ivory inlay Les Paul from the same company. My brother's guitar is still with him after more than 30 years. I searched but couldn't find any links on Taro guitars, other than people searching for information on Taro Guitars.

Cheers!

My first guitar was a white Big Sound strat copy. Sold it sometime around 1993.

I've looked high and low all over the net for some information on it, but cant find anything sad.gif

Posted by: sted Jun 10 2009, 10:02 PM

Heres mine!

Its a Westone Spectrum DX, twin humbuckers, coil taps (i think!) locking trem (Definitely not an original Floyd!) and must be around twenty years old now! lder than some GMC members! biggrin.gif Still looks pretty cool though I think!

Posted by: djohnneay Jun 10 2009, 10:23 PM

I first played the acoustic guitar for about a year, i don't know the brand, but the action is very high.
After about a year I bought an electric guitar, a silvertone sik1 shredder. I still have it and play alot, because I believe the guitarist makes the music, not the guitar.

When I have enough money, I will buy an Ibanez, but I will never sell this one.

This guy, almost years ago. Still have it, still like it, although I play a LP most of the time. I believe that when you do something, make a commitment in it, believe in yourself, i.e., get good equipment, best you can afford, right from the get go.

This is a cool topic. But sad. Mine was a black Peavey Tracer with 24 frets and a Kahler Spyder trem. My late father got it for me at a pawn shop. It was awesome. I left it in a drummers basement one weekend, because I planned on returning the next weekend to jam. I didn't going over because of work. But the drummer had another dude that I didn't know come by. That dude left with my guitar. My friend and I hunted him down and found him. We convinced him to bring it outside in order to avoid broken windows. When it arrived It had a 22 fret maple fingerboard neck, all of the fine tuners were missing and the bridge was blocked. It also played like caca.

Though I regret the entire scenario, including my resulting behavior, I cracked the the guy in the face a couple times and disowned the drummer (but he and I worked things out a year or so later).

I'm constantly on the lookout for a similar guitar. I'd buy it in a second for admittedly false sentiment.

Mine was an Ibanez Silver Series Strat. I bought it new in 1977 in Hong Kong. I've still got it - though it's out on loan to a friend and has been for quite a few years. Think Ibanez only made them for two years as Fender got a bit upset. I replaced it with a Gibson semi.

Details and pictures of the Silver Series http://www.break-even.org/ibzspecial/silver/silver_series.html and http://www.musicplayer.com/article/ibanez-silver-series/mar-05/4178.

Yeah, those were the years now known as Pre and Post Copyright! Out of the same factory as Ibanez came things like Grant, Avon, and a few others including Tokai! It was when Fender™ and Gibson™ won their court battles that Ibanez then released the 'Roadstar' Series with re-designed Headstock!
I have one of those early 70's Grants!!

Posted by: tonymiro Aug 6 2009, 06:12 PM

Friend had an Avon Gibson EBO bass at the time plus an Ibanez Fender Jazz copy - guess there was a fair chance that all three (Ibanez Silver, EBO and Jazz) may have come from the same factory cool.gif .

Posted by: mattacuk Aug 6 2009, 06:17 PM

Mine was an "Eleca" les paul, it was pretty sweet for a first guitar, great fun smile.gif

Quite possibly!!! Some of those early copies are getting quite collectible!!! The Factory was the Fujigen which is also why the quality of those instruments was so good!!!!

Well my first guitar was an ibanez western guitar. I dont know which model but it was black/green colored, very dark. I then traded it for my real baby, my first and only electric guitar, a Charvel Model 3DR. Since there are not so many good pictures of this model on the net i decided to make a 3D Rendering of it, the color is a bit off, but near to the original smile.gif

Posted by: Pizzoaro Aug 10 2009, 05:39 AM

My first guitar was a Pearl River Acoustic that i now use as a flower pot tongue.gif xD
My first electric was a sucky Cort tongue.gif

Posted by: Emir Hot Aug 10 2009, 04:26 PM

I had an old and cheap acoustic guitar which was impossible to tune properly. I learned all the basic chords on that one and even some simple solos

Posted by: Caelumamittendum Aug 10 2009, 04:38 PM

Won't post mine! Too embarrasing! tongue.gif

Posted by: twist Aug 11 2009, 01:37 AM

i took a pictur of mine, so you can now judge the real color smile.gif

Well, actually its a lot darker in reality, the flash messes up the color... Oh and the little hole just above the volume knob is the old position of the volume knob, the pre owner didnt like it there so he had it changed. I think its better that way.

Yall should love this story. My first guitar was a fender rip off that was broke by KISS in one of their concerts. I meet a guy that worked the show who brought it home. The neck was broke and held in place by the strings. I paid 35 USD for it. It took me a month or so to find a cheap guitar to steal the neck from. I never bought strings for it, I used the one that came on it, I played it for months before I figured out,,, this did not work like a real guitar. There was NO intonation of any kind. But after getting a brand new Hondo guitar (Not much better lol) I put the notes on the old KISS with tape and paper. laugh.gif

My first guitar was a acoustic one bought second hand from street musician in Prague smile.gif I'll try to get a photo of that one...My first electric was a Chester stratocaster copy...Pretty "bad" instrument considering quality of make, comfortably (action from hell) etc...
