Gabriel's gig where the band used 'backline' equipment got me thinking ....

You guys who gig out of town - do you travel with amps or do you use amps (and drums) provided?
What have you found that you've liked?
If you know you're using 'backline' do you bring a specific pedal(s) or even a specific guitar(s) that you know "will work with anything" ?

We always travel with our own backline, as there aren't too many occasions in which the organizers can provide a setup like ours in clubs here. It's for the best and since we have the possibility to do it, why not? smile.gif

Absolutely!
But what about when that's an impossibility?
I noticed that Gab mentioned he brings his Jeckyl and Hyde pedal to help get his OD tone where he likes it. I do that too when I have to use backline gear ... Fulltone 'GT-500' or Lovepedal 'amp-11' (depending on how much drive I need) and sometimes a compressor. With one of these plus the compressor I can usually get 'my sound' through any amp - tube or solid state or modeler.

When we toured weekly, we did it via same organizer and used their equipment. It wasn't ours but we got so much experience on it that we managed to make it sound as good as possible. When we organized our gigs (out of town ones) we would usually aim to have a backline waiting for us in the club - whatever it is smile.gif It was just easier for transport. Of course - we would bring our stuff when needed (Amps/drums).

I always chose my bass gear having this situation in mind - being ready to play on whatever amp is there!
For example - I got a nice pedal especially for this purpose : Markbass Super Booster. It has DI (for going clean to PA) + it has a clean boost as well as "shape" filter on it. I can get most bass amps to sound great using "shape" filter clever. Usually called "enhancer/shape" knob on amps, it allows me to cut mid frequencies and boost highs/low end at the same time. It can really make the bass sound sweet with thumping low end and clear highs (great for slap bass style). Since not all amps would have it - it was very neat to have the same thing in form of a pedal and just use it when needed. Since I have active pre-amp in my bass, I basically eliminated most of "surprise" factors. Amp would just need to have flat settings on EQ and volume knob turned up and I would be good to go! smile.gif

yeah, this is what I'm doing nowadays because we are usually travelling by normal bus. Every time that we have a private bus for us I bring my mesa head with us but as this is not the most normal situation I have the option B (pedal distortion). I'm curious about the full tone, what sounds do you get with it?

The Fulltone GT-500 is (I think) his highest gain distortion pedal (he also makes 'fuzz' pedals which are a different thing).
It can get very gainy. It also has a separate boost section that can be used independently from the distortion. You can also configure the boost to be pre or post distortion.
The dist. side has bass-mids-highs-gain-volume. The boost side boost-highs-gain-volume (very little actual gain available on the boost side). So, like Bogdan's mentioned with the 'Mark Bass' pedal - a lot of control over your sound especially with the configurable, separate boost section.
Anyway, here's a sample. The distorted rhythm guitar is the GT-500 (lead stuff is a fuzz pedal) ... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songI...;songID=8435192

A little heavier here. The riff guitar at 0:53 and heavier rhythm that follows... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songI...;songID=8439019

*I use normal (vintage) output pickups and no hot-rodded 'lead' channel on the amps. The first example is into a clean, Fender style amp and the second one is a stock (and beat to crap) JCM-800 with the MV up and the gain lower. If you have anything hot or overwound then you'll be able to get even more drive.

As with any piece of gear you'll read reviews on-line of guys that hate the GT-500. I think it's great - YMMV.

Usually we travel by using our van, so even when we can't take the van, we take our cars and still, we take everything we need plus backups. My band mates and myself to some extent, are obsessed with having the best conditions on stage and if we know they can't be available otherwise, we will try our best to take our gear along anywhere.

The AMTs save the day in the worst case scenario, so we may look at the AMT SS20 as the backup of choice for the Days of Confusion crew smile.gif

One of my band mates, has a device from Boss, with which he immediately switches to the AMT if the Mesa goes down - it's this one:

Do you have any recordings where you've used the AMT only?

we opened up for disciple in some Arkansas lake sometime ago , we were the first to go on ,then the middle act, as they started there set the word came down that Disciples bus had broken down and noone knows if they will make it or when. so after an hour after the second band they asked us if we had any more material( we did)we were geting ready to swap gear, when Disciple showed up after a car dealership gave them( on their word) a rental van to get them to the gig, they showed up with guitar picks and drum sticks, walked in, strapped on the gear that was there on stage, tuned up and put on a brilliant show
I gained a whole lot of respect for them that day, no whining -stuck up musicians , no complaints, their attitude was were here, we'll use what we have.
I was lucky enough to run their lights that night and will never forget their example of what music should always be about

That sounds great! Thanks man (one more friggin' piece of gear on the list laugh.gif )

@Gab ... The first example is for a band I only did session guitar work for (technically I don't even know if they're a band - ?).
The second example is with a band I'm in currently (Stand Easy - the Celtic rock band I probably mentioned in another thread or two. Bagpipes and rock and roll). I use the GT with them all the time live.

I used to take all my own Gear to every Gig. As did the other Guitarist, our Bass player and our Drummer. We used to turn up with 2 vans loaded with gear!!!
Just my gear used to be:- Just 5 or 6 Guitars, my Selmer Valve Amp + 2 2x12" cabs, Peavey Renown 2x12" Combo, Boss Pedals in a Boss BCB 60, extra Pedal board with Peavey Footswitch, Boss A/B Foot switch, Zoom Pedals and Zoom Multi-FX, Dunlop Wah and a Volume Pedal. Sometimes I'd even have an Extra Zoom Floorboard to switch my Zoom 9000's and my Zoom 9150!!

I'm jealous! Great, great amps. I was lucky enough to work at a studio that had a 2x12 combo. It sort of sounded like an AC-30/Twin Reverb and an early Marshall (JTM-45) mixed together.

Hehehehe!! A lot of the places we used to play didn't have any decent gear for Bands, plus we used to spend 3-5 days a week driving between shows and so just took all our own gear everywhere we went!!

Mine's an original 1967 Treble 'n' Bass mkII with a 2x12 matching Cabinet and a Laney 2x12. it's very basic, it has 2 Treble inputs and 2 Bass inputs with Volume, Bass and Treble controls on each group. No Reverb or anything else!
This isn't mine but it's the same (without the wheels attached to the cabinet!!):-

The array of amps, pedals and axes is overwhelming innit? smile.gif

Looks like the stuff that vintage dreams are made of... The oldest thing that I played on, is a VoX AC30 from 1962, owned by the PRS dealer here in Bucharest.

It can be, for sure!! We used to play 3 sets a night, one of older covers, one of more modern (at the time) covers and one of our own songs.
For the first two sets I'd mainly use my G&L Tele and my Thinline Tele and for our own stuff I'd use Dean Z Signatures (late 80's Superstrat fitted with a Kahler), I had a sponsorship deal with a local Shop and had 16 of them at one point!! ohmy.gif

Sweet!! I have a Guitar Tech friend in London who has a Basement full of old Vintage Amps and Guitars, it's like walking into an Alladins Cave whenever I go visit him!!!
