Learning The Modes..., Some questions regarding the modes of the major scale... Options

Hey David,

Your lessons are very informative and have helped my guitar playing exponentially. I have a question for you: Now the first scale I learned was the minor pentatonic box pattern in the first position. Now that box in itself kicks ass, you can do a lot with it, there's a lot of licks in there, and it has kept my satisfied for a few years. I eventually learned the entire scale in every key in every position of the fret board, this kept me going for a while longer.
However, after a while it's time to expand and these learning the modes are good place to start, but I find the single "box" or position you show us is difficult to generate licks out of, I find these scales work better when you mix different boxes. Is there any truth to this?
Also, do you know where I find a diagram for playing vertically and horizontally in these modes? Basically I just want to combine all the different boxes of the different scales to make something more interesting.

I understand what you mean....
It's also good to memorize the 3 notes per string patterns.
You should study my Modes and Chords lesson along with the one you're working on now.

I understand your frustration.
It took me a long time to realize how easy it was. It wil come to you suddenly, you'll see!
Modes are a little different and we don't talk in terms of boxes, because all the boxes are actually different modes..
Here are the scales I would recommend to memorize.

Minor pentatonic box 1

Aeolian mode (natural minor scale)
Ionian (Major scale)

Dorian

Mixolydian

Phrygian

Lydian

Locrian


Memorize these and make sure you know their names.
Once you have them nemorized, you'll be more comfortable understanding how to use them...
