Hey mate You probably heard about the TV series 'Quantum Leap' - well, that's where I got the inspiration for the thread name
Well, I am curious to know a bit about your goals and your experience so far before starting out, so that I may know where this thread - which by the way, belongs to you - will be headed
Let's rock!

Thank you, Cosmin! : )
I first started playing guitar at the age of five. My mother is a classical guitar teacher, who tought me to play the guitar and shared with me all of the details, such as hand posture, tone quality, etc. At the age of eleven I got interested in rock and heavy metal. That's when I bought my electric guitar (Stagg Stratocaster), which I've been playing on for about seven years already, but it was not until now, that I decided to take things seriously. I also prefer genres as Blues and Jazz, which is a precondition to improve my improvisation skills. : ) You could check out my videos of Ben's Bushido Tasks here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/dianguitar
Also, I've been playing in a rock group for about 3 months.
Right now I'm struggling to create a convenient system, which would help me to grow as a guitarist. I have several guitar books (beginner/theory/tech/rock/heavy metal/jazz/blues/funk ans so on) and a few DVDs of lessons from guitar players like Michael Angelo Batio, but it's very hard for me to sort it all in the right order. I always take something from here & there and I end up frustrated at the end.
GMC is an amazing place to improve one's skills, but I still have that tendency to "learn it all" and to watch all the videos (which I believe is a truely impossible task).
So I'd be glad to work with you and get some great tips on playing & practicing. ^^ I already started the Bushido classes & Todd's Shredding Journey.
Greetings from Silistra!

Dian I know who you are
Well, my idea is the following - since you are already involved in a serious number of tasks, I would take you on a different path:
- expression - where we will deal with articulation and interpreting phrases so that you may be able to tell a story with your instrument - creativity - I will let my imagination go crazy and ask all sorts of weird musical things from you here - rhythm - a great lead guitarist has a wide knowledge and mastery of rhythm!
What say you my dear neighbor?

I'd say that it sounds amazing! That's exactly what I want to work on. Thanks, Cosmin! Let's get to work. : )

I usually record myself with a camera, which I suppose is unacceptable, because of the poor sound quality. What software do I need to record myself on my laptop? I have read, that it isn't very wise to plug in the guitar directly to the laptop with distortion pedals, because of the powerful signal, that they create. On the other hand, my sound card isn't that good, so I always hear an annoying lag, while playing through the laptop. Any tips on that?

We have two options here - either for the time being until you get your hands on an external soundcard, we use your webcam - no problems, I think that for the tasks here, you can obtain a decent sound, or you could watch this little video here and see if you can make things work like this:
Let me know what you think about this and we can start with the tasks

Alright, I think I've got it. I didn't manage to use the ASIO4ALL driver, as it simply doesn't appear on the task bar, and there's some awful background sound, but I did make a sample recording and I'm learning how to make a video right now.
Shall we begin? : )
PS: Added some noise gate and it's a bit better now, but I can't play pinch harmonics. The hum over the solos is still very annoying though.
Posted by: Quantum Jan 15 2013, 08:20 PM
I finally installed ASIO4ALL, but it doesn't make any difference. The humming's still there. Any ideas? Or is the only solution an external sound card?
Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 15 2013, 11:39 PM
Hey Dian! The best solution out there would be an external sound card - I am not aware of what you could do with the humming though If it doesn't provide the best results, you could start a thread in the Gear section and I am sure that Todd for instance - he is a gear head could help out with this technical sort of stuff.
Now, in the mean time - I would be curious to hear some takes on the following lessons from you, based on what we have discussed before:
For the expression development - I think this one should get you going
Please tell me if they are too difficult so we may try something else.
Let's rock!

Hehe! You are a little classical virtuoso Very nice mate - I had a wonderful experience being present at the classical guitar international olympics held in Sinaia - a mountain resort in Romania. I just went there to watch, as I am no classical player, but I was amazed by what I've seen there
Anyway, I just subbed to your channel on Youtube and out of what I'm seeing there, it's gonna be a pleasure to work with you, neighbor!!

Hey, Cosmin! : )
Here's the video of the first task:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e56v97-j4rc
I'm kind of busy this week, so I'll have to record the rhythm part next tuesday. Is it alright?
Also, I recorded the third part of the 'Soundtrack Homework' for the next videochat.

Hey Dian! This is very good - you nailed those quirky bends that everyone misses on this take Well, I think you are on the right path with this one - only small details (some bends and some notes that were very slightly off time) that need a little bit of polishing, but they will come into place, the more you play it Looking forward to the V-chat homework and no worries, take your time
Hey Dian! It sounded good, but you need to check your guitar as it's a bit out of tune
Now, Out of what I've seen, you need to work a bit more on riffing, just because, even though you played correctly from a technical perspective, you still need to work in order to create a groove, so if it's alright with you, I'd like you to have a go at this:
Hope you're not cursing me or something, but I want to push you higher

Cursing? Nope. I adore playing these kind of lessons. : ) Thanks, neighbour. I'm working on it.
PS: An age-old expression states, that if you love what you do, you never have to go to work again in your entire life. So, it's not annoying for me to push myself higher.

Wise words! I know that one and I always keep telling it to people! Let's rock then and please let me know if you need help with any of these
Tell me if it feels too difficult - the idea here is to get you out of the comfort zone

Hehe, the truth is that that's what I want to play the most. I just don't know any theory about it and don't know where to start from. I have a Jazz book and some DVDs but they explain technical and more advanced material, but not the glue which would stick it all together in a nice good composition.

Hey mate, I don't have too much experience in that myself, but i can talk to you about the whole feel of funky music, as that I know and have played cumulated with Stephane's lessons, I think we can pull out a good job out of this - what do you say?
Posted by: Quantum Mar 31 2013, 09:57 PM
Alright. I'm ready. I'll take that seriously and work on it.

Alright! Let's a recording with this new lesson then in the mean time, after you finish it, I will throw some more stuff at you and urge you to practice it against a special sort of backing track

Howdy neighbor!
I have given the track a listen and here's what I suggest:
- the guitar seems a bit out of tune so, please check it before recording - there are timing issues all along the track, so I'd say you should try the following drill
- reduce the tempo at about 75% of the original one - record the take against a metronome click at that tempo, taking care of timing, accuracy of the notes and articulation
Can you please try this and post the take here?

Greetings, neighbour!
I finally made some time for practice. Here's a video of the last lesson:
Hey neighbor, long time no see! It looks like you are getting closer! As with the thumb tapping - you need a more defined approach on the phrases, as at this point they sound correct but not that 'full' if you know what I mean There are some notes that feel a bit choked sometimes - not bad, but you could try working on it some more, so that the interpretation can be top notch as well Anyway, it's not an easy lesson, so take your time
