I am happy to present this last part of Marcus Lavendell's lesson suite. You might notice how the solo now is heavily spiced up with runs - compare it to the first lesson! When you have had the time to practice this lesson - be sure to give us some feedback so we know what you think about this lesson format!

This new concept is great!!!
I encourage you to keep it for lessons where it's possible. Gives everyone something to work with.

A complaint though - the detuning in these specific videos, normal tuning would be better for anyone playing along. Even worse is it that the backing tracks are detuned. That renders them useless for plenty of ppl here.

There are many ppl with only one guitar and a floyd rose who won't go through the effort to tune down.
I'm sitting with my Ibanez with FR while two of my other guitars both lack the thin E string and one refuse to intonate so I'm pretty much in that situation. sad.gif

Most inconsiderate - it took me nearly 3 minutes to reprogram my Variax for Eb tuning ... of course I have it now and can switch between E and Eb in a second smile.gif

Just kidding - I am really loving this 3 lesson concept - it means that a lesson can work for anyone regardless of level, and there are challenges ahead when it is mastered, a really cool idea.

I think it is great as well. I'm working on the beginner lesson and once I have it mastered I will now have something I can build upon. Great idea!

This was a very good idea definitely! But also it won't be possible in all lessons.

And we should definitely make lessons in Standard tuning only I was pissed off when i saw that the lesson is in Eb tuning. I still managed to play by playing everything i fret lower but hey - it's not gonna work that way always. unsure.gif

For some reason I dont get the point in playing in lower tunings. I know it makes it sound differently, but why cant we all just use standard!! It's too much of a hassle to keep tuning, and detuning my guitar. I know i can just tune my other guitar to Drop D, or whatever, but still it would be hassle always having to change guitars to play that one certain song!!

Drop D is a different story, that has to be detuned to not lose it's point. But not Eb.

I belive I know the reson for playing in Eb though... some gut named Yngwie does it laugh.gif

I never considered the Eb-tuning a problem before! BUT I understand now that it must be troublesome for you guys to change the tuning for each of my lessons here!

Sorry about this! I'm still the new guy here, and it just hasn't crossed my mind that it was a problem.

I'm afraid I already recorded my next lesson in Eb-tuning, but after that I'll go for the normal/standard tuning of course. smile.gif

That's great Lavendell! Can't wait for the next lesson smile.gif

Kris, would it be possible to have the _backing tracks_ run on repeat? Like for this lesson it's all about repeating over and over until it sticks and now when I play the 100 bpm when it's finished the 120 bpm plays and then it stops.
I'd like to set the 100 bpm to repeat forever.

Yeah Marcus it's ok - i understand you! You play all that Yngwie stuff and he probably uses Eb tuning so you stick to it but most of guys have standard tuning.

In my opinion there is totally no point at all tuning down 1 half step huh.gif I mean, what does that half step change? It's ok if you tune down 2 whole steps but 1 half step ???

That's why i am getting a 7-string. I want that low tuning and bigger runs and no tuning changes.

Thats why i want a 7 string as well. I could have the playability of my Ibanez with the detuned riffage of my Washburn/

I agree with pavel, i dont like to change the tunning, i always play in standard, Also, umm a question here, do we just tune down the 6th E string or do we tune down all strings? thanks.

Posted by: Pavel Jun 17 2007, 08:33 PM

You tune down all strings! It's only the Drop D tuning that you have to tune only 6th string.

i think your tuning in Eb gives the solo a GREAT sound....not too much of a hassle for me...i know my guitar very well and can tune it up very quickly

Tuning down only a half step doesn't change the sounding of a solo at all. It would change it if it was tuned down an octave. But a half step is no change especially for a shred solo like that!

Just guessing here but Yngvie tune down and play with thing strings (.008?), perhaps both does their part for adding a little bit of speed.

EDIT: And maybe helps killer vibrato a bit too

That's true, low action also helps

Hey Pavel, promise not to use that 7th string too much in lessons because I have only a six string and that extra note would freak me out! laugh.gif laugh.gif

I am not planning on using 7-string for lessons at all. Maybe one or two lessons for those here who have 7-strings but i don't think there are enough of those so the lessons won't be popular.
