GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Celtic Recommendations

Posted by: rokchik Dec 1 2007, 04:36 AM

Hey everyone. A couple of people have asked me if I'd do a Celtic Music recommendation list so here it is. I've gone with just a few sub genres as most I could have just called "celtic Fusion". But if people come up with more I'll certainly add them. The majority of the bands I've listed are from either North America, Ireland or the UK, however I made note of a few that were from other countries as I know GMC is very diverse. Now some of these bands were hard to classify as they all do a bit of traditional, but hopefully it's a fairly accurate job. Please point out any errors you may see and please feel free to add ones I've missed. Hope you all enjoy smile.gif

Excellent Rokchik, very well done! smile.gif

WOW, I need too much time to listen all these bands laugh.gif

Great list, I love Celtic sounding stuff, but I don't know about any bands.. That's about to change laugh.gif

Posted by: Twibeard Dec 1 2007, 03:28 PM

Thanks! This is really great ...

Posted by: Andrew Cockburn Dec 1 2007, 03:58 PM

Wow, seems like you know your Celtic!

Posted by: tonymiro Dec 1 2007, 05:48 PM

Great list Rokchik,

I'll try to dig out a few more for you later but my wife would kill me if I didn't ask you to add Christy Moore under trad smile.gif . As an aside ,my our daughter counts her blessings, if she'd been a boy she'd have been called Christy - true story smile.gif . Might also be a difference in spelling but also Wolfe Tones under Celtic Rock same as Wolftones?

Anyway I'll look through the albums/cds later.

Cheers,
Tony

Posted by: rokchik Dec 1 2007, 07:48 PM

I'm glad you all like the list smile.gif

Tony thanks for pointing out my spelling error on Wolfe Tones and also for Christy Moore. I didn't realize he did January Man...I love that song...I added a link aswell. smile.gif

EDIT: Also just an FYI...iTunes has celtic Podcasts for anyone who may be interested. I just found this out today so I may have a lot more groups to add later.

Great suggestions Robin....I have taught you well biggrin.gif laugh.gif

I've updated the list to show in green bands I'd recommend as a starting off point I guess for those that may not be to familiar with the genres. All the bands I've mentioned are pretty great but the highlighted ones I think all have a bit of something extra smile.gif

Posted by: tonymiro Dec 2 2007, 05:57 PM

A few more possibles Rokchik - sorry if they're in there already.

Trad - Mary Black, Maire Brennan, Dolores Keene, Dick Gaughin, Dave Spillane, Mary Coughlan, Jimmy McCarthy.

If you want to let Scottish music in then - Boys of the Lough, Capercaille. And Irish/Scottish/English - Five Hand Reel.

Christy Moore - great singer and a good guitar player as well. Very funny to watch in concert -if you can't get to see him live the live cds are still funny smile.gif. Nice touch putting the links in green smile.gif .

Cheers,
Tony

All added Tony. Thanks for the suggestions. Seem you know your stuff too smile.gif Didn't Dick Gaughan play in Five Hand Reel? So can't believe I missed them they are so great. I have a few more to add too now that I've found those podcasts.....so much great celtic music out there. And as for the green....well I just thought it was fitting due to the subject matter biggrin.gif tongue.gif

It a pretty unique name smile.gif These guys are from Toronto, On Canada. I've seen them in concert a few times and they are fantastic. They do a lot of festivals all over the world so keep an eye out. I know they play in Florida all the time.

Absolutely right about Dick G and Five Hand Reel Rokchik smile.gif - he was also in Boys of the Lough with Aly Bain but as a soloist did the wonderful - at least in my opinion- album 'Handful of Earth' smile.gif . (Lots of other great albums but that one stands out particularly.)

I hadn't heard Boys of Lough but I checked them out on youtube...great stuff. I wasn't aware that Gaughan did some solo work. I'll certainly be checking that out. Thanks again.

rok

Oh you should really check out Leahy if you already haven't. Amazing group. They are all brothers and sisters and are from my home province of Nova Scotia. They are just fantastic.

Posted by: tonymiro Dec 3 2007, 01:29 AM

Thanks I'll look in to Leahy.

Wife has made a disgusted noise and pointed out that I've missed out the following:

Trad - De Dannan, Patrick Street, Moving Hearts (I'm embarrassed to have forgotten them blink.gif as ol' Christy Moore was in them and Planxty) and Luka Bloom.

Might not be suitable for the list but maybe worth a mention - Ivor Cutler, the Scottish folk poet who recorded a number of albums including 'Life in a Scotch Living Room Vol 2' and was much loved by the late John Peel (UK Radio1 DJ).

Cheers,
Tony

I'm beginning to like your wife more and more Tony smile.gif

I have Planxty there actually but I'll add the others for sure. John Peel was so great....I'm embarrased I missed him. ohmy.gif I know I've missed a few.....my cd collection for celtic music was a bit larger then I remembered and not all of it is here. But as I remember things I add....like Andy Stewart...how could I forget Andy Stewart....my grandfather is rolling over in his grave for sure. smile.gif

This topic has really brought back some wonderful....and somewhat intoxicating (if you catch my drift wink.gif ) ....memories. I have quite a few more bands to add but I left the list at work (it was a slow day) The podcasts on iTunes are pretty great actually. Some very good indie celtic bands out there that's for sure. I'll update the list very soon.

This band is very good...it may take me a while to get use to Aleksandar Petrovic's voice as not really the style I like for Celtic music but he does a great job. The musicians are fantastic and the fiddle player, Ana Djokic is very talented. I really like their song "Merry Sisters" and their version of "Star of the County Down", which honestly is not one of my favourite songs regardless of who sings it, but they do a great version.

I don't like their version of "Rocky Road to Dublin" though. Amazing video...very beautiful, but this is one of my all time favorite traditional songs and the Irish Descendants version will always be my favourite. All other pale in comparison for me...well except maybe the Dubliners or Chieftans but hey, they are hard to beat smile.gif

Thanks for introducing me to this band Bogdan. I'll definatley add to the recommendation list as they are very good.

No problem Bogdan they are a very good band for sure. Their music is very traditional in nature and sounds wonderful. Like I said I'm not to keen on the voice but I could get use to it. He sounds great on the original music from the band but some of the more traditional stuff...well maybe I'm just use to hearing Irishmen sing them.

They do seem like they'd be a fun band to see live but then again when your playing and listening to this type of music it's hard not to have a great time...for me anyways. (Also a few Guinness never hurt either smile.gif ) Do you enjoy this type of music?

rok

Posted by: Bogdan Feb 11 2008, 02:39 PM

Well actually I do very much! But for some reason I never listened to it at my home...Always seems to be on gigs live.. wink.gif

Well thanks to my good buddy Robin smile.gif I have a new favourite celtic group. The group is the String Sisters and they are amazing. I don't know much about them so maybe Robin can help out in that department but they are amazing fiddle players....I know not guitar but still I love the fiddle smile.gif

My foot hasn't stopped tapping since I started listening to them this morning and I already have them burned on disc for my St. Paddy's Day party tonight smile.gif Here is a youtube link to them. Just great stuff.

If it helps Rok http://www.eirefirst.com/lessonintro.html. Don't use the links in the table (they don't seem to work for me) - use the drop down box at the top of the screen smile.gif .

I had to learn my Irish (a little different to Gaelic) years ago and struggled to pass tbh so best of luck. I've since forgotten an awful lot; funny though that I can remember how to swear and a few songs like Amhán Na bhFiann/the Soldier's Song wink.gif .

Hey GMC'ers in light of Lian's amazing Celtic guitar lesson series I thought I'd rehash this old thread. Been quite a few new members since I did this so it may be new to some. Hopefully you find it useful and please feel free to suggest bands I may have missed as I am sure there are A LOT!! I am still adding some myself but it has been a while since I've looked at this thread. I will add more "samples" and more bands as well as I get time.
