GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Irig

Posted by: Phil66 May 21 2019, 06:23 AM

Hello folks,

I'm thinking of getting an iRig as I've just ordered a travel guitar.

I was initial thinking of the iRig 2 but then got concerns about latency so I then looked at the iRig UA where the processing is done in the unit not the smart device.

Main question :What do you think of the UA and are there any other devices at a similar price point and size? I'd like to be able to play along with YT backing tracks at the same time and it must be able to be used with headphone, must be compatible with Samsung android but having ios compatibility too would be great.

Thanks for your help.

Phil

I don't have experience with phone type devices, but only alternate solution would be getting one of those affordable processors. Korg Pandora is the smallest that I know of.

Phone output will go to processors aux, headphone connected to processors out. Again didn't try this but should work, although it won't be as compact and likely won't sound as good as amplitube.

You're probably better of e-mail'ing ik multimedia including your current phone brand/model cause they'd know best based on their customer feedback.

For the needs you explain here I would also go for Mertay's advice and use an external processor instead - as many of them do have aux in and allow you to mix/blend in a separate stereo signal with your processed guitar tone.

From what I have heard though people seem happy with irig - and I have been look a little on this one:

...as a flexible solution for outdoors recording (using my studio mics, as well as direct plugging the guitar into the phone).

Thanks, that does look a better idea, Pandora hard to get, Korg no longer support it, could buy used but dubious about that.

I'll look around, I think Zoom do something small also the Mooer PE100 wink.gif

Cheers

They still seem to make the bean; https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PocketPOD--line-6-pocket-pod-guitar-amp-emulator

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/amPlugAC30G2--vox-amplug-2-ac30-headphone-guitar-amp

I just remembered these, seems to have aux too. Darious if I remember right had demo's on his youtube channel long ago, you can ask his opinion too.

But also, have a check how strong your phones output backing tracks acoustically. You could also get one of those pocket amps and not worry carrying around headphones.

Hi! I'm here to second Mertay and Kris opinions. I didn't try the new Irig, but I have Irig HD and I don't use it because I hate its latency. The amp emulators are amazing, and the overal phone apps are very inspiring but I get sick of the latency. I can't stand it. I wonder how the new unit solves this issue... I would try it, but the safe choice is to get something like Pandora.

I'm now checking that i/o by IkMultimedia shared by Kris. You should check if it works as a classic audio interface regarding drivers and latency.

Pocket pod can be an option, but I think that this one seems closer to Pandora since it includes Drum loops for practice.

As it usually happens with these devices, high gain tones are not what I would call good. But if you want some crunchs and clean, any of these can be a good option.

Iphone apps may sound better, but you have to be sure that you won't have latency.

Thanks folks,

Yeah I am very very sensitive to latency, it really messes with my head.

I'm bidding on https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KORG-PANDORA-PX4D-ToneWorks-Guitar-Effects-Processor-w-manual/223516340865?hash=item340a9cb281:g:9NIAAOSwHgNc2-lz&frcectupt=true at the moment,, fingers crossed. The Mooer looks a little fiddly to get to grips with.

Cheers

Nice, that's a legendary piece of gear!

Cool Phil! I used to have the first Pandora that came out. I burned it by using a wrong power supply 😱

At the time, I was blown away over the sounds in that unit.

Thanks folks,

The main thing is to get some kinda suitable sound into my ears, I know it's not going to be anything like the Helix and I bet if any of you heard it now it wouldn't be quite what you thought it was wink.gif

I remember my first ever pedal, it was one of http://music-recording.co.uk/amplifiers/korg-g1-guitar-distortion-processor-003063.html I plugged it into my Bandit and instantly hit the arena stage rolleyes.gif It was incredible, but watching YT videos now, not as good as I thought, the rose tinted glasses promptly fall off.

Anyway, hopefully I'll win it, my guitar should be here today, I'm away this weekend until Monday so whether I win or not I'll take the guitar to keep my fingers in tune wink.gif

Cheers

Phil

UPDATE:

Well I won it, £47.50, don't know when I will get it, it is saying next Tuesday (Public holiday here on Monday). Sometimes things come early wink.gif

Make us a video when you can! Love to hear it smile.gif That is a classic bit of kit. If you do find the tones are not to your liking, I"ve tried wads of gear and ended up with the Orange Teleport which works with your phone (android or IOS) and also acts as an interface for a computer ( i know you don't need that, it's just a built in feature). Running Amplitude on the phone. It's the only setup I've tried where there is no perceptible latency. All the other guitar apps had latency.

However, you just bought a device to serve this purpose so this is probably a moot point. If you decide to upgrade at some point, it could work then. Here is a demo.

Thanks Todd but it's past the point of no return now laugh.gif

These things are so cheap though I don't mind changing out soon, basically I just want to be able to hear the guitar with some distortion (blues - metal) and a backing from my tablet or phone.

Cheers buddy,

Cheers buddy,

I'm sure it will be fine, it's only to get some sound into my ears with some distortion. I probably won't use it for recording but you never know. wink.gif
