Let's share the guitar tips/advises you wish someone told you right at the beginning, when you were starting to play the guitar.

Mine is a bit embarrassing : my first contact with guitar was when I was given a beat up second hand acoustic guitar. I was very young and I knew absolutely nothing about it. No one in my surroundings could help me either. What I did was trying out some strumming, random chords fingerings and playing one string melodies and combinations. I got to the point where I found myself playing strictly on the E string and plucking strings with my thumb, basically emulating a upright bass slap type of sound. That is the only thing that sounded good at that time....

Why??? I didn't know that I should and how to TUNE a guitar! smile.gif

Years would pass (abandoning guitar completely) and only after trying to play a friends guitar (in the meantime I found out about few chords but they didn't sound good on my guitar) - I have experienced an eureka moment! smile.gif

I strummed the C and D chords and they sounded absolutely wonderful (guitar was in tune!) laugh.gif
That must be the coolest moment for me ever and those two chords sounded amazing to me.

That is when I got hooked on playing an instrument and performing in a band.

The tip is : always make sure your guitar is in tune (and learn how to do it)

I wish someone had told me about string dampening when I first started playing electric. I really struggled to get my playing clean and without missounds - when all the time it was strings I was NOT playing that made noise.

Well if someone would have told me about Alternative picking...

You know those solos could been easier to learn. Yes try to play Fade to Black solo with downpicking only... rolleyes.gif

Agreed again, but I didn't have anyone to show me anything.... that bad part of that is that you pick up bad habits like down picking for everything and that slowing you down.... A LOT! mad.gif

I wish somenoe told me that I don't need to pick the strings too deeply, when playing licks.
That slowed me down greatly and I was convinced that either my guitar sucks or I suck.
It wasn't until Todd explained that it doesn't matter, when you're just lightly brushing the strings
with the plectrum, because the guitar should be amplified enough to sound great.
And it worked. : )
My motivation and enthusiasm really went up.

Well, I wish someone would have taught me how to record my guitar at home before coming here.

I also wish someone had told me that feeling nervous while recording is normal. I thought only I got nervous and messed up.

Gabriel, Jones, Todd and osiris, they all helped me starting from scratch. I didn't know anything about recording at all, and now I sit at my PC and experiment with different stuff to make tones and its extremely fun and rewarding smile.gif

Ben told me everyone gets nervous when recording but its alright, because if you mess up your playing, just record another take and keep doing it until you get it just perfect. And he said I'll get over the things I'm afraid of once I get used to them smile.gif And thats what's happening now, I'm recording different stuff (at least I try to) and then show people here and I ask them how I can improve.

All of this help has been extremely motivating for me, and I wish to thank everyone here for that smile.gif

Well, I still have a problem with this - doesn't matter that I know, habits die hard :-)

Yeah, try playing sweep picking arpeggios. Disasterous, right? At least for me.
But fortunately, I'm in GMC now. Whew! smile.gif

I would have loved that someone told me that we can move the power chords and find all the chord keeping the same chord shape. I would have been the Johnny Ramone of my classroom! biggrin.gif

Me too! I played for ages struggling to get a clean sound! Could never figure it out! It took so damn long to fix this bad habit!

I wish that I would have learned that there's really no rush to learn anything. It's always better to spend the time to learn one idea really well, rather than skip over a handful of ideas and only half learn them. That came to me later in my development, but was a big step in my learning curve on guitar.

One word: Relax! biggrin.gif

I also would've liked to have someone tell me to alternate pick instead of economy pick.

This is the best thing to know EVER! When I was 17, I thought that awesome chops were the result of a magical exercise that turned you into a deadly shredder over night smile.gif I laugh a lot when I remember myself at that point. The only true source of power is practice and focus! That is to be known smile.gif
