Guitar Tips You Wish You Knew When Starting

Mine is a bit embarrassing : my first contact with guitar was when I was given a beat up second hand acoustic guitar. I was very young and I knew absolutely nothing about it. No one in my surroundings could help me either. What I did was trying out some strumming, random chords fingerings and playing one string melodies and combinations. I got to the point where I found myself playing strictly on the E string and plucking strings with my thumb, basically emulating a upright bass slap type of sound. That is the only thing that sounded good at that time.... Why??? I didn't know that I should and how to TUNE a guitar! Years would pass (abandoning guitar completely) and only after trying to play a friends guitar (in the meantime I found out about few chords but they didn't sound good on my guitar) - I have experienced an eureka moment! I strummed the C and D chords and they sounded absolutely wonderful (guitar was in tune!) That must be the coolest moment for me ever and those two chords sounded amazing to me. That is when I got hooked on playing an instrument and performing in a band. Agreed again, but I didn't have anyone to show me anything.... that bad part of that is that you pick up bad habits like down picking for everything and that slowing you down.... A LOT! That slowed me down greatly and I was convinced that either my guitar sucks or I suck. It wasn't until Todd explained that it doesn't matter, when you're just lightly brushing the strings with the plectrum, because the guitar should be amplified enough to sound great. I also wish someone had told me that feeling nervous while recording is normal. I thought only I got nervous and messed up. Gabriel, Jones, Todd and osiris, they all helped me starting from scratch. I didn't know anything about recording at all, and now I sit at my PC and experiment with different stuff to make tones and its extremely fun and rewarding Ben told me everyone gets nervous when recording but its alright, because if you mess up your playing, just record another take and keep doing it until you get it just perfect. And he said I'll get over the things I'm afraid of once I get used to them And thats what's happening now, I'm recording different stuff (at least I try to) and then show people here and I ask them how I can improve. It's always better to spend the time to learn one idea really well, rather than skip over a handful of ideas and only half learn them.
