GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Which Scales

hey I was just wondering if anyone could explain to me which scales these guys are using to get that sound, reminds me a lot of a Necrophagist sound. Mostly on the solos. Another question for me is how to incorporate them into your sound it seems complicated for me.. any advices??

These guys kick arses , maybe more listenable then Necrophagist, and more like Death. Btw Guitarist/singer looks like Petrucci

Btw. Gabriel also doesn't know these 7-8 string scales

Well, in the riffs they are using Eb minor scale but as the second chord would be Ab major, the scale at that moment is Eb harmonic minor. In the first solo, they the chord that sounds is C dim so the solo there (those tapping arpeggios) have been composed using diminished arpeggios and D harmonic minor scale. This means that minor scales, harmonic minor and diminished arpeggios are used by them, at least in this song.

Gabe is right and in addition to this, I would suggest, getting your ears acquainted to the specific sounds of these scales and arpeggios

Diminished arpeggio formula - 1 b3 b5 - sounds good over a diminished chord or against a riff that is made up using the same notes in the arpeggio formula. These arpeggios are symmetrical on the neck and by that, I mean that they can be played at a distance of a minor third from one another. Ex: if you are playing the C diminished arpeggio (C Eb Gb) the next one will be Eb diminished (Eb Gb A) and so on.
Minor scale - 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 goes will with minor, minor7th, minor9th chords
Harmonic minor scale - 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 usually people use the Phrygian Dominant mode extracted from this scale (starting on its 5th and having a major third instead of the minor third as the normal Phrygian mode)

If we would have C harmonic minor we would have the following notes - C D Eb F G Ab B C and then, the Phrygian dominant would be G Phrygian Dominant (the 5th of C harmonic minor) and it would have the G Ab B C D Eb F G formula - it sounds very good against major chords.

Try out these combinations and see what you get, plus, go ahead and write me if you wish to talk about this some more
