My scale knowledge is pitiful and I think that this just reminded me that I need to know a few more. I never really played scales. I must have discouraged myself thinking I'd find a better way instead of working. When I solo or write a cool lick it seems to be a harmonic minor or Phrygian. Recently I wrote a solo over a rick graham backing and used a whole tone scale to connect 2 parts. I never finished it but plan to hopefully soon. Are there any good lessons you'd recommend that are around the 4-5 range? Hi Jim! We have many lessons based on scales and modes on that range. If you want to work specifically on harmonic minor and phrygian, I recommend you to check these ones: Phrygian: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/phrygi...loing-beginner/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/phrygi...g-intermediate/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/phrygi...ed-with-triads/ Harmonic minor: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...-for-beginners/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Harmonic-Minor-Rocking/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...-melodic-minor/ However, if you want to go deeper with scales and modes, I recommend you to give a try to these threads: Learning Major Scales Lessons How to Solo Over Chords For Guitar -------------------- My lessons

Great suggestions from Ben, Gabi and Todd! I would also like to add a few more to the collection:
Phrygian dominant based riffing and soloing, in the same musical context: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Flamenco-Metal-Riffing/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Flamenco-Metal-Solo/ The Phrygian dominant is pretty much the Phrygian mode with a major third - a very popular tool in metal It is however derived from the 5th step of the Harmonic Minor mode, which you can read more about in here: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=50246 This post has been edited by Cosmin Lupu: Jul 31 2014, 04:56 PM |
