This is great! I'll definitely give it a try! I'm trying to think of some nice lyrics fitting the theme. I'll keep you updated on my progress in the Mentoring Thread. But to be honest, this track would also make a great standalone lesson! wink.gif

You know its been a long time when your DAW resets the timing, warps the background clip, and you don't even notice and record n warped time.

huh.gif

Yeah, that's what I get. Guitars feeling neglected and making me pay for it.

Anyway, I fiddled around with the DAW just for practice to see what would happen if I 're-warped' the clip timing back from 149bpm to 75bpm and then correctly set the Daw's timing from 125 to 75. It shifted things around in my clip a little and I had extra, but I just snipped the end off for fun to see what would happen. Ableton was set for 125bpm and the background clip was warped to 149. Some musical math intervened and the background clip was 'slowed' down.

I like the effect that you are using here, it reminds me to Mars Volta. Is it an influence for you?

You ROCK Cael. smile.gif

Posted by: GeneT95 Mar 27 2019, 12:48 AM

Mars is cool. But I wasn't really thinking about them specifically. I was just messing in the DAW trying different stuff with a mostly dry slight reverb distortion track.

I doubled the track. Applied slight, mostly dry, delay to one and panned it harder to one side. The second one I made the delay really wet and it was mostly centered. Then I nudged it slightly outa synch with the first track although I nudged it all over the place just for fun to see what would happen.

Because everything was having the timing warped, depending on how far out I pushed it, odd warbles popped up here and there.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 27 2019, 02:27 AM

Could you solve that timing issue? Maybe you can convert wav files to avoid any tempo issue...

Posted by: GeneT95 Mar 27 2019, 03:05 AM

Yeah, I fixed it. I just forgot to set the piece BPM first before I started. It defaults to 125. Then for some reason missed the Clip getting warped. I had just forgot how Ableton sets up.

Here's one that I did messing around with a completely clean guitar take and trying to use Ableton to destructively edit it.

Just messing around with stuff.

Would something like this be okay Gab? I'm just using Em pentatonic, not following the chords, that's something I'm just learning wink.gif

There's a terrible bend halfway through part one, I'd been playing a hard tail and switched to a floyd, my fingers weren't ready for the extra movement and my ears heard it when it was too late laugh.gif

Thank you Gene, it is really inspiring when someone notices improvements, I still think I'm as crap as I was four years ago, I guess we don't see our own improvements.

Posted by: GeneT95 Mar 30 2019, 11:36 PM

Usually we don't. Go back and listen to something you posted 4 years ago and then listen to your second take.

You'll hear it. I promise.

Thanks Ben,glad you like it, I wasn't sure and now I hope the real take I do can capture the same feel, sometimes the first takes is the best.
Cheers

Nice! Sounds like the neck pickup? Works well for this and the tone is good as well. I can quite a bit of improvement from your takes a few years ago. Find one of your collab takes from when you started doing them here at GMC I think you'll hear it too smile.gif Your vibrato is much more refined and your note choice is much more deliberate.

Hi Phil!! Thanks for your takes mate!! Except by that bend/note at 00:32 (first take), everything sounds good! I like the phrases and note choices.

The second solo is cool, but it would be interesting to hear a new take in a few days after practicing it, and trying to make it sound groovier and more dynamic.

What do you think?

Posted by: Phil66 Mar 31 2019, 06:58 PM

Thanks Gab,

Yes, that bend is embarrassing ohmy.gif blink.gif laugh.gif I didn't have time to do another take though and as it was experimental I posted the take for feedback.

I'll definitely give them both some practise, how do I make #2 sound "groovier"?

thanks

Phil

Practicing a bit on Section 1. Less notes. More space. On to section two.

Playing without a pick cause I was lazy and couldn't find one close by, so the attack is thicker. Bias 2 Amp free trial vst.

Slightly Different mix

Original Mix. I took out some reverb and dropped the track volume.

Practising it more, to make the rhythm more natural and more connected with the backing track groove. Close your eyes, follow the groove with your body and play the solo. Keep on moving your right hand up and down even when you are not playing. Find which are the notes that sound better accentuated, use different dynamics.

Hi Gene! Nice job here! I think that both mixes can work for this one. You can share with me both processed versions so I can try them in the mix and decide which one fits better with the other takes that we receive.

Your playing is good here, I like the tone that you get with your fingers. Well done mate!!

Posted by: GeneT95 Apr 2 2019, 03:06 AM

I decided on a different take. But can provide the files for the other ones if you think they fit better. I went simpler for the section.

Here is the audio. I'll get the video up before the deadline. (Just have to figure what I played in the second part now that I changed it)

**Edit : I decided to combined the two takes using the first part of one and the second of the other. I deleted the the ones that were posted here originally rather than post again. Anyway, sorry for all the posts. Just working thru stuff. Let me know if you want the filtered reverb on the second half removed. I left it in as it didn't seem to mix too bad with the first section.

When doing collabs, I usually just hit record in the DAW and let the track loop 15 or 20 times. Then I go back and listen to each one of the takes. Typically a lick or two will catch my ear from each take. I'll chop it up for a rough comp and listen to that. If it works, I'll then go back and play the licks as a single take. So it sounds like I've got one good take, but it's really 20 takes that I grabbed bits from then had to go back and re record so one lick flows to the next.

Some folks really do one pass takes. That's a bit rare for me to be honest. I have to build a solo lick by lick and then get it straight in my head, ok so I'm starting with this hammer thing, then the scale thing, in to a pinch, then the blah blah blah and so on.

Getting a good take is often the result of lots and lots of bad takes that had one or two good things in them. Just like learning a song, it takes time. You gotta work through a LOT of bad before you get to the good smile.gif

That"s pretty much what I do Todd, but, sometimes I drop lucky and get something usable in a couple of takes. Don't get me wrong, I know my parts can be vastly improved with time and effort, the effort I have bags of but not so much the time so I end up doing something down that is a three or four out of ten wink.gif

That's sounding good mate!! The only moment that I didn't like is the note at 00:27 that doesn't sound very good over the chord at the moment. I also notice that your guitar has some tuning issues when reaching the higher notes... maybe old strings?

UPDATE:

It's technique buddy, I've checked the high E string all the way to the 24th fret, it goes ever so slightly flat in places, no more than two lights on my TU-3 at the worst. Are you hearing flat or sharp??

Yeah. That and then listening the next morning. I feel that when I give it a rest then listen again I find things that I did not hear before. Like too much time with the headphones on dulls my sense of tone and timing.

It's just I don't always have the luxury of that type of learning, even though it is much more instructive. My wife is away for a while soon, so plan on section 2/3 next week.

The idea is good! but it needs some more practice.

The good side of giving longer deadlines is that you have time to practice and polish your takes.

Is it not smooth enough? ie, not a nice continuous increase in pitch or is it something else?

Cheers

Phil

Yeah, that’s what I feel. It should be smoother.

Concentrated on using less finger pressure, it seems to affect it more higher up the neck.

I took the last part as it looks like most folks are grabbing the first part. I gave my vid a bit of Metallica music vid vibe which I hope works in the final smile.gif The guitar tone in the uploaded solo file has far less FX than the one in the video. I'm using OVERLOUD THU for the first time and it's quite cool. I'm stoked they added rig profiling sorta like the BIAS plugin. Just in case anyone has a copy of THU, I'm adding my preset bank that I was messing with for this one. It's zipped.  Ben_Metallica_Collab.ovp.zip ( 3.08K ) : 6

And the video. All it needs is skulls smile.gif

Messing with the second part. Played the same line with a standard tuned guitar then a baritone long scale tune to B with heavy heavy strings.

Man. I mixed it on my mac. Then ported it over to load up via my Windows box. Listening to the same track on either is such a different experience. So much more bassy on my Windows box. Not certain how that happens.

What is your playback system and daw on the MAC vs what you are using on Windows?

I didn't use the DAW in Windows. I just forgot my password for Soundcloud, so I dropped the file into Dropbox from my Mac and just loaded it up to the cloud with my shop windows box which I had been using more of late for recordings/DAW.

I was commenting on the different tonal characteristics of each system despite using the same headphones - HD6XX. I imagine the mix sounds different to everyone depending on the specifics of their system. I didn't think it would be that wide/obvious.

Hi Gene! I can’t listen to your take well in this mix.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Apr 16 2019, 06:58 AM

That's just it If you are using the same playback software, E.G. Itunes, or what not, on both systems, there should be no difference at all. The Mac OS makes no changes to audio unless requested to do so. Both systems playing back on the same software through the same headphones will yield the same results, assuming the playback sound device iis roughly the same, e.g the built in sound card. If you are hearing a big difference, something else is going on. E.G. whatever you are using for playback is messing with the sound. The operating sytems themselves and the computer hardware should have zero bearing on tonal difference.

Awesome!!! I"m digging your take here! I see lots of bits coming together! Most of all your tone. I hear a great deal of improvement in your overall tone. Most tone comes from the fingers so it's really an improvement in finger control! In addition to that, there are some very good fx and eq tone choices happening. Did you build this patch?

Thanks Todd,

I didn't build it from scratch, it's a modified "For The Love Of God" patch I picked up. I've used it a lot and with that guitar, it's my go to ballad patch so if you've noticed tonal improvements, I'm happy smile.gif I took on board some of your comments in QuickLicks about me digging in. I'm trying to pick much lighter now, not for everything but in the main, could this be part of it?

Cheers

You're very welcome Gab, I hope it's usable smile.gif My favourite part is the long downwards run at the end where I manage to time it right (almost) to the last beat. I usually finish half a bar early laugh.gif

The Steve Vai lead patch is always a good place to start smile.gif Also glad to hear you are not digging past the string threshold as much. Sometimes, a heavy hand is called for in a given lick. Often, a lighter touch works great and prevents the pick strikes from getting in the way of the upcoming notes. Being able to do both is a very good thing imho!

I Like the vocals too! Maybe during the vocal section the lead bits might benefit from some extra ballad fx (delay/reverb) etc. just to sit them back a bit in the mix and feature the vocal and let the lead bits be more of a texture?

It sounds like me and one other person (just guessing) are sharing the last lead. We sort of split the middle as there isn't a good place to cut in and out of my solo. I realize this on listening to it. There are not gaps to do a call and response with the other player. No good place to make the cut really as mine builds to the end but has to be cut at some point or there will be no room for the other player. Putting these together has got to be a serious challenge.

Thanks Todd,

I've always had issues with fret buzz and I think it must have been that I was digging too be, maybe even pulling the string away from the fretboard at times (harpsichord style).

Thanks for the feedback Todd!! Yeah, I have to experiment more with the part that combine vox and lead guitar. Adding more reverb/delay can be a good way to solve it.

Regarding the last solos (your solo combined with Onetabmat). Do you like how both are connected? Or do you prefer to keep both solos complete?

My solo sort of builds to a climax as it's written as a piece of music rather than distinct licks. But whatever works for the song as a whole is what you should do. The solos are really in service to the song itself.
