Quick Licks #27 Less Shred More Vibrato!

INTRO:
Let's take another look at vibrato and this time, I'm going to leave off the complicated bit that lead off QUICK LICK 26. That starting bit is really it's own lick. The point here is to get to you to focus entirely on your vibrato so we will jus worry more about that.

First, here is quote from John Petrucci.
Attached Image

He has a really good point here. It's often the stuff that we don't even think about, controlling the instrument, eliminating string noise, controlling vibrato, that is the core of what we build our playing "style" on top of. Let's look closely at our vibrato here.

Again, make sure to use your entire hand for vibrato, don't use just the finger tip. Focus on up and down motions and try to avoid quick back and forth movements as quick back/forth movement results in a very shallow/twitchy vibrato sound and that alone can wreck how your playing comes across.

*Make sure to watch the vid, don't skip it and just look at the tab, the tab is just where to put your fingers, not the lesson.

*NOTE: It's ok to let your thumb come over the top. This is fine for blues/funk soloing where you need bigger vibraro.

*Try this simple warm up AFTER watching the vid, so that it makes sense.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
This lick, like the previous one, will work on gabes funk collab. If you have not joined, it's a great chance to work on your soloing! It's not a fast backing, no shredding. Just focus on your bending and vibrato. Here is the link to the collab.

I'm hoping folks give this a shot who have done REC takes and gotten comments about working on their vibrato. This is a very simple lick that really just focuses on vibrato technique. In Bootcamp, I've seen people make great gains in ability, but we don't do much on vibrato as it's mostly about learning to shred. I'm trying to use these lessons to try to balance things out as vibrato is a crucial technique and if it's not good, it can kill the listening experience. If you have any doubts on your vibrato, give this lesson a shot.

NICE!!! Yet another amazing take that I hope motivates folks to give this a shot. This is a great example of what can be done once you can control your vibrato. Notice folks how he takes it up the neck and uses the same technique. Also, he has just enough gain on this. Sometimes folks use a pinch to little gain which can sap sustain. Try to have enough gain on your tone to make it sound rich/thick/sustainy, but not so much that it turns muddy/fizzy and hides things. Perfect balance here. Ben is using BIAS so

BEN PLEASE SHARE YOU BIAS PATCH HERE SO FOLKS CAN TRY IT!! PUT IT ON THE TONE CLOUD AND TELL US THE NAME OF THE PATCH!! smile.gif PLEASE!!
Also folks, notice how full and deep and wide the vibrato is. Notice how it adds to the backing. Very soulful and expressive. He varies the speed of the vibrato as well to show how it sound different at different rates of vibrato. Also combines bends with the vibrato which is a crucial skill. Being able to transition smoothly from vibrato to bending to pitch. Another skill on the road to becoming a well rounded player.

In short, this is a great example of how to do this technique in various positions, various speeds. It's much more than I was asking for and above and beyond the call of duty, but I appreciate it!!!! Score!!

BTW I had to create the #27 just for you, as there has never been a #27 in quick licks. Not until you completed this lick. So well done!! You keep the STAR OF HONOR as the only dude to have made it this far.

I just put up a new one today, #28, but you keep the star as you are still the highest rank and I'm guessing I'll be making a #28 quite soon smile.gif

#28 Open String Licks, Alt Picking and Vibrato.

Hello Todd,

This was just a very quick take, vid mic only. I know some of the vibrato on this is a bit scruffy and twitchy but I've had a crazy weekend and am pretty tired unsure.gif

I'm struggling to get the vibrato in, in time, I can do it much better when I have time to fit it in but this is hard for me so any tips would be great. I have the same issue with Bens Phil Collen lesson, some of the notes are very short and by the time my vibrato has got going it's time to move on sad.gif

NICE!!! The camera audio is fine. All I need, ever, is to see both your hands, and be able to hear what you are playing smile.gif Anything beyond that is pure gravy. smile.gif

The first few notes here are exactly what I am looking for. You DIDN"T lift your thumb off the neck, you DIDN"T us lateral vibrato. You DID use solid technique by gripping the neck with your entire hand and using the finger first then wrist to make the string wag! There was a bit of a stumble going up the neck but that was in the "gravy" area as you had already done the Lick.

This is what was hoping to see, grabbing the neck firmly, using the fulcrum created by the hand, and BAM nice vibrato!!!!As you noticed, the same technique works up high as well. Add this technique to your daily practice routine. Also, use it in some solos as you are doing in the vid. Just loop that tune and work on your vibrato!!!!! It's a great way to do it as you are working on it in a musical way by using it with music. IMHO you will get more out of it than playing with just a click. You are training your ear while you work on your technique which is the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned smile.gif

I hope you find time to do the rest of the quick licks a I think you can handle all of them and they will give you a bag of tricks to pull from when improv soloing!

As for this one, stick a fork in it, it's DONE!!! smile.gif

***BONUS POINTS: Keen fashion sense and great taste in guitars. smile.gif

He Shoots he scores!!! This is a very fine example of what I'm looking for on this quick lick. It's all about the vibrato. You keep your thumb planted for leverage just like I was hoping for and you pull on the string with a single finger and still have a nice full sounding vibrato. You avoid any side to side motion which is great news as that's the pitfall I want folks to avoid! It's a fine technique and all, just not what this quick licks is about. For our purposes here, this is exactly what I want to see!!
Good hand control, never goign to sharp, never letting loose of the neck, always in control. You are ready to do vibrato when and where you want to. Your officially ready to dive in to any solo and give em hell!!!!You are set to be the highest ranking GMCer EVER in Quick Licks. As soon as I grade the remainder of your Licks, you will be far and way ahead of everyone else. In other words you just ..
LEVELED UP!!!

You've got a good start on some great vibrato!! It's good to see you really digging in to the vibrato. It's not tepid or shy at all which is what I like to see smile.gif There is still that wash of delay/reverb sorta making it tough to hear, but I can see that your vibrato technique is off to a very good start which is the point of this quick lick so you ..

Bravo for giving this a try! It's got the same issue as other bluesy lick you just did. Your sorta moving your entire hand around and just using the first finger for vibrato. Try to play it more like I'm doing in the preview video. Moving your fingers and keeping your hand in the same spot. I know it's not going to be easy. But it's good to isolate bits of your playing that could use a bit of improvement.

I tried reworking it and it sounds about the same, except it's played with 2 fingers now. I felt too strong grip in this one but if that's how it's supposed to work, I'm fine with it.

This is an improvement Soldier! Super congrats on that. Progress is all we can ask from anyone, including ourselves. I'm liking where this is heading! Let's keep focused on just these two notes. Once these are sorted out, it's just a matter of changing strings. You did much better on this one, let's change just one thing.

The first note on the seventh fret, try putting your first finger on the fifth fret. Your third finger on the 7th fret. Right now it looks like you are using both fingers right next to each other and moving the entire hand down from 7th to 5th fret. Instead of that, keep your hand in one spot. Fret the 7th fret first, then just lift your third finger up and leave your first finger on the 5th fret. Basically just like it is done in the video. Sort of like you were playing just two notes of the blues scale. The only difference is that you are adding vibrato to the notes.

Does this make sense?

Todd

It was much easier after some practice with just the technique but it still needs some work.

BINGO!!! I knew you could do it! It seems much more daunting than it actually is. Like anything on guitar, it can seem to be a really big task until you break it down and work it bit by bit. This drill is the same thing on two strings. Of course, you could play it on every string for practice and at several positions on the neck. Your technique here is much improved. You are using more than one finger and playing like a scale. This is critical to playing bits like number 26, which you also play much better now. Super congrats! You are prepared to hit the next challenges in this series!!

You just..

LEVELED UP!!!
