Quick Licks #27 Less Shred More Vibrato! INTRO: Let's take another look at vibrato and this time, I'm going to leave off the complicated bit that lead off QUICK LICK 26. That starting bit is really it's own lick. The point here is to get to you to focus entirely on your vibrato so we will jus worry more about that. First, here is quote from John Petrucci.  He has a really good point here. It's often the stuff that we don't even think about, controlling the instrument, eliminating string noise, controlling vibrato, that is the core of what we build our playing "style" on top of. Let's look closely at our vibrato here. Again, make sure to use your entire hand for vibrato, don't use just the finger tip. Focus on up and down motions and try to avoid quick back and forth movements as quick back/forth movement results in a very shallow/twitchy vibrato sound and that alone can wreck how your playing comes across. *Make sure to watch the vid, don't skip it and just look at the tab, the tab is just where to put your fingers, not the lesson. *NOTE: It's ok to let your thumb come over the top. This is fine for blues/funk soloing where you need bigger vibraro. *Try this simple warm up AFTER watching the vid, so that it makes sense. I'm hoping folks give this a shot who have done REC takes and gotten comments about working on their vibrato. This is a very simple lick that really just focuses on vibrato technique. In Bootcamp, I've seen people make great gains in ability, but we don't do much on vibrato as it's mostly about learning to shred. I'm trying to use these lessons to try to balance things out as vibrato is a crucial technique and if it's not good, it can kill the listening experience. If you have any doubts on your vibrato, give this lesson a shot.

BTW I had to create the #27 just for you, as there has never been a #27 in quick licks. Not until you completed this lick. So well done!! You keep the STAR OF HONOR as the only dude to have made it this far.

Notice how it adds to the backing. Very soulful and expressive. He varies the speed of the vibrato as well to show how it sound different at different rates of vibrato. Also combines bends with the vibrato which is a crucial skill. Being able to transition smoothly from vibrato to bending to pitch. Another skill on the road to becoming a well rounded player. In short, this is a great example of how to do this technique in various positions, various speeds. It's much more than I was asking for and above and beyond the call of duty, but I appreciate it!!!! This was just a very quick take, vid mic only. I know some of the vibrato on this is a bit scruffy and twitchy but I've had a crazy weekend and am pretty tired  I'm struggling to get the vibrato in, in time, I can do it much better when I have time to fit it in but this is hard for me so any tips would be great. NICE!!! The camera audio is fine. All I need, ever, is to see both your hands, and be able to hear what you are playing
Anything beyond that is pure gravy. The first few notes here are exactly what I am looking for. You DIDN"T lift your thumb off the neck, you DIDN"T us lateral vibrato. You DID use solid technique by gripping the neck with your entire hand and using the finger first then wrist to make the string wag! There was a bit of a stumble going up the neck but that was in the "gravy" area as you had already done the Lick. This is what was hoping to see, grabbing the neck firmly, using the fulcrum created by the hand, and BAM nice vibrato!!!!As you noticed, the same technique works up high as well. Add this technique to your daily practice routine. Also, use it in some solos as you are doing in the vid. Just loop that tune and work on your vibrato!!!!! It's a great way to do it as you are working on it in a musical way by using it with music. IMHO you will get more out of it than playing with just a click. You are training your ear while you work on your technique which is the best way to do it as far as I'm concerned I hope you find time to do the rest of the quick licks a I think you can handle all of them and they will give you a bag of tricks to pull from when improv soloing!
