So far I like M Mangini but I agree that he's no Portnoy,
Drums on the new song sound a bit generic compared to previous albums imo, but I'm waiting for the complete album to give a good listen. -------------------- Visit my:

It sounds different... even more than the studio song that I've heard but he is very good so I think that we will get used to him.

Mike Portnoy is a beast. Immensely talented songwriter and drummer. Yes he started Dream Theater, yes he put in a ton of work, But I think people forget that Dream Theater is not Portnoy alone. LaBrie, Myung, Rudess, and Petrucci all compose Dream Theater as well. Mike wanted a break from DT, but in my eyes, DT was everyone elses main focus, not every side project that came along (Lets face it, Portnoy put a lot of food on his plate within a short time), no wonder he was tired. Mike Mangini is equally talented in technique, and better in some areas compared to Mike, and vice versa. So that area of debate is done for. Songwriting wise it mostly falls on Petrucci, Rudess, Myung, and LaBrie - which is fine by me, has anyone forgotten how AMAZING Petrucci is? Or how incredibly underrated LaBrie's solo project is? Plus, Mangini is just...I mean come on, the guy is an insanely talented drummer, he can do anything. I have no worries. Those are my thoughts anyhow. Yeah you're right. I think the biggest "loss" is on the writing and production as Portnoy is a walking library of music info. But I agree Petrucci is an enormous part of it and you can tell by listening to his solo album and projects. as for recommendations to start with DT, it's really hard as they are sort of like Queen for metal. They cover a wide range of styles, but maybe this: 1991: 2010: -------------------- Visit my:
