GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Looking For That Good Old Tube Fuzz

I currently own an AVT Marshall Head hooked up to a MG Lead cab 120watts amp/cab. It produces a sound that I enjoy (could be better with cash lol) however, it doesn’t produce that good fuzz/distortion as a jcm amp or jvm. I have switched from OD1 to OD2 and it kind of helps however, it gives way to much feed back and is a pain to control while switching from lead to rhythm. Is there a pedal or a type of set up to enhance the fuzz/distortion? I’m looking for a good rock/blues sound. Any suggestions?

Tube, Fuzz? Correct my if I'm wrong but the "fuzz" sound comes from transistors. So if you want to get that sound, get a fuzz pedal.

Hi there
Fuzz is a different effect to distortion , if your after a fuzz sound such as hendrix tone for example then you will need a fuzz pedal.
In terms of distortions pedals there are loads that you can try. I would suggest either a tube screamer or a boss ds 1.
Your best bet would be to try out as many pedals as you can , there are loads of distortion/overdrive pedals on the market.
Although a pedal can never replace the sound of a cranked tube amp but they are a hell of alot cheaper.

One of the classic fuzz boxes was the Arbiter Fuzzface. It's now made by Dunlop http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/8165-dunlop-fuzz-face.html. Quite expensive imho and I don't know how authentic it is but probably worth trying out.
Jesse's suggestion of a Tubescreamer is a good one - there are several different models TS5/TS8/TS7/TS9/TS808 but AFAIK it tends to be the original TS9 and TS808 that people really like. (Not that the new ones aren't any good - just that people seem to prefer the old TS9.) People often want silly money on Ebay for original TS9s and so Maxon and a few other boutique pedal manufacturers now make their own modded versions of the old TS9s.

I have used the dunlop fuzzface and its very good , especially the hendrix signature model which is very authentic in my opinion.
Another pedal i would suggest is the fulltone ocd , one of my favorite overdrive pedals.
I also like indy guitarist pedals , they have a great range that recreate vox and marshall plexi sounds.

- EHX English Muff'in
- Fulltone OCD
- MXR Boost/Overdrive
