Disappointing Concerts, Festivals more often prone to sub par shows

Sometimes concerts leave you unsatisfied and if you paid big bucks for it, you may go home annoyed. I should learn form experience but somehow always make the same mistakes. Never go to übercommercial jazz festival concerts. I listen to all types of music form progressive metal to classic with focus on indie/alternative stuff and jazz. I've seen hundreds of great club concerts and been to huge festivals all over the world. Every time I went to a jazz festival it sucked (including Montreux). It's always boring (not because you are too sober, as opposed at nice rock festivals) and the focus on mainstream (for commercial reasons) leads to often sub par experiences by overly saturated mainstays of the scene. Anyway, you get what you ask for. I've been to the George Benson and Larry Carlton shows at the Stuttgart Jazz festival recently. Benson (as always) bored the hell out of me with his radio pop songs but also played some electrifying funky stuff. As expected the evening was fun despite the shameful synth-pop downfalls. Carlton however was a somewhat disappointing experience. I really dig the guys playing and saw a great concert with the Sapphire Blues Band but this quartet concert in Stuttgart was really not good. The rain came halfway into the set, so thats one problem and we left shortly after, because we were wet and freezing, but even before, it was just such an uninspired experience. Anyway, this mostly only happened to me on festivals (rarely on rock but often on jazz festivals) and I think it is because of the festival experience for the artist themselves. On rock festivals bands at least have some fun (sometimes too much and fall of the stage) so even if there might be some stress involved for the bands, the vibe is right and the connection to the crowd works. On jazz festivals (at least the larger ones) artist often just seem annoyed. This shows on stage.

What is your experience with festivals. Do you like club gigs better ?

That's an interesting observation. I've never been to a jazz gig let alone a jazz festival so I can't add to that but of the 1 metal festival I've been to (Ozzfest) I wasn't blown away. It was just too easy to be distant from the whole thing and they're almost an apathetic vibe..

I can't really say that I've been to an entire concert that was bad, but I can say that I saw a band that completely let me down.

Last September I went to a concert hosted by a local radio station (CPRfest).

I was so excited because usually they get generic, kind of Creed sounding bands, but this past September was completely different. They brought in a bunch of my favorite bands.

They had Bullet for My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Black Tide, Sevendust, Hell of Highwater, Seether, Three Days Grace and last but not least Escape the Fate.

I was excited for Escape the Fate because I've followed them since their earlier years. When they played, everything SOUNDED great, but there was just no life in them. The show was entertaining and their guitarist wasn't even there. They had a stand in. It let me down a lot.

I keep telling you guys that I was disappointed by Blink 182 back in 2005, but they made up for it a couple of weeks back when they were headlining the Southside Festival.
It was the only time though that a festival gig was better than a solo gig by a band.
I have some bands play festivals that I have also seen on their own headlining tour, and with the exception of Blink 182 they all were better at their own tours. To be honest, not necessarily the bands themselves, but the whole atmosphere. I guess it is because at festivals, you always got lots of guys who don't really care for the band or just watch them because they are there. At a tour concert, you've only got the real fans who paid to see just this band, so there is usually more energy.
That's just my observation...

Im not too keen on being outside much so I've never been to a proper festival.
I did get talked into going to a Jazz / Blues 'event' once. Im really not a Jazz fan at all. I felt like I was in that Bruce Lee movie 'Game of death', I had to make it through various rooms while a different band bombarded me with jazz jujitsu smile.gif

At the bottom levels are smooth, easy listening jazz.. you made it through with not too much trouble. As you go up the levels the jazz becomes more hardcore with more notes and weirder time signatures !
