Tone Finger Ease Cleaner, apparent residue

I used it couple of months and started noticing a grayish residue or waxy substance on the fretboard. Tonight i just used it again and i immediately started seeing it turn a grayish color right off the bat. Am i doing something wrong or what? I have heard not use water on fretboards because it could rot it and see that lemon oil is a good product to use. Is this true? Also i don't if this is supposed to happen though but when i spray the can about 3-4 inches away it still seems that it is coming out too fast. Does this happen to you? I just use it when i change strings and clean the whole fretboard, then after i use this and change the strings i put finger ease on it.. What I do before spraying it on is slip papertowels (or some other type of barrier) between the strings and fretboard so the entire fretboard is covered/protected.
