Hello everyone,

I find that when fretting chords I press too hard making them sound slightly sharp. I personally don't notice but instructors and members with good ears have noticed.

I find that because the hand is in an awkward and unnatural position it seems to go tense whilst trying to hold the shape. I even get it with 5 chords (power chords) which should be relatively simple to hold.

Are there any exercises to help?

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Phil

It can be caused partially by the gauge of the strings and height of the frets. Basicly you have to place your fingers as close to the fret itself as possible. It will require less tension to keep proper pitch. Other than this it's just a matter of time and practice (getting used to how much pressure is enough).

There might be also antoher cause. Strings height on the nut. The lower strings are the less pitch difference you'll notice between open string and fretted note. Unfortunately there is no way I could help you with this remotely. Those are too small height values to be precisely figured out without touching the guitar in real life.

Thanks Darius,
I think the action is ok because when I fret a single note it is pretty close to pitch.
I have a feeling it is muscle tension issue. Maybe my muscles aren't developed enough for the chord shapes so it is a strain for them. Hopefully once they get stronger the shape will be easier and therfore the muscles will be more relaxed.
What do you think?
I woke up in the early hours thinking about this rolleyes.gif

Normal reaction if one is used to only play electric, atleast for a long period of time. Since the fretboard is lighter and the guitar has more pick sensitivity, one might use unnecesarry strength with the acoustic guitar.

It might also do with tempo feel, playing chords and trying to keep the metronome feel tight might cause this too.

I guess some slow 1234 type exercise with metronome support+stretching exercise should help. Give short breaks though, until adjusting your pressure your wrist is forced beyond what you're used to and it might damage the wrist or muscles. Even professional guitar players can injure themselves like this while focused.
