Im looking to upgrade my amp... I currently have the line 6 spyder 3 amp... I want something that has a great heavy metal sound out of it... I was thinking of a tube amp, but it doesnt have to be a tube amp... Any suggestions would be appreciated... Also i wanted to keep the cost down as much as possible..

Thanks

I just got back from GC where i demo'd the new Line 6, Bogner designed Spider Valve Tube Amp. I really liked the sound. For $699 I was impressed. Check it out:

One of the cheapest heavy amps is the ENGL Fireball or ENGL Powerball, could happen that they are more expensive in the US compared to here in Europe. Check out VHT Deliverance what the cost in the US!
Marshall DSL modelst are not all that expensive.

The Line6 Valve seems great! Good for versatility but mind it's a modeling tube amp so it will sound like like lots of other brands but none perfectly and has no sound of it's own. Would probably be a great studion amp imho or if you want plety of different sounds.

If you want to go lower in price I'd say Laney. GH50, GH100 or VHT100

...there is a smaller, cheaper ENGL called 335 and I think it's a single channel amp. I've not heard it myself but it's supposed to be real heavy.

i was looking at ENGL's a while ago.. shipping costs a bundle and i can't find them in any stores here in canada.. They were asking like 1700 for just a head to be shipped here sad.gif

biggrin.gif My experience with Krank amps consists of.. "Dethklok dethklok!"

Which is to say, they sound pretty cool and I'd like to have one if not so expensive biggrin.gif Instead I'm still aiming at a laney GH-50L.

Do you listen to Opeth? Mikael uses a GH100L, just the 100w version of the GH50L. And it's a fairly low cost amp, but it sounds great.

Madison Amps are the raining amp for Death Metal at the moment. Arsis, Into Eternity, Deicide, Aborted, Cryptopsy, God Dethroned and other metal bands like Symphony X all use Madison amps. I don't know how much they actually cost but if your truely seeking for a metal amp, be sure to find what kind of amp your favorite bands use.

Michael Romeo from Symphony X uses mostly ENGL amps, with an occasional fender or marshall. I've never heard of him using anything else or what Mike Lepond uses.

ENGL is probably the only other amp that might draw me from getting a laney <3 But we'll see. It's going to be a while before i get anything anyway.

A really good amp is the old peavey 5150, now 6505 combined with a marshall 4x12 cabinet. You'll get the sweet Gothenburg-sound smile.gif . Ex, The Haunted, At The Gates, In Flames etc. the disadvantage is that it's quite expensive.

Yea, I didn't check enough. Mike Lepond uses a Madison Amps. I didn't even know what amps they use so I didn't care much for it at all till I saw there band name on Madison Amp artist users.

If you want a good amp for metal, you cant go wrong with Mesa, ENGL, Peavey (5150 or 6505) or Krank. Laney also makes some good amps for metal like the VHR100. Check them out smile.gif

Yeah, thats why I suggested the GH50L or GH100L, they're basically one channel of the VH100R. Footswitchable gain so you can keep it clean and then get a lotta gain right away tongue.gif I mean come on listen to opeth. And it's one of the cheapest ones in the thread unsure.gif
