Apr 27 2007, 09:24 AM	GMC:er Posts: 4 Joined: 23-April 07	I've learned that it doesn't matter how long you practice if u practice wrong. I used to play for hours and hours (6-8h). Thing is I can learn the same things in 1 hour if I just concentrate and think about what I'm playing. I tend to get "tired" if I play that long and not pay attention to it that much. After I changed my way of thinking I started to learn alot faster. I noticed if I practiced on a lick that I had never played before and If i just memorized the lick first in my head then divided it to parts and slowly started to play it with a metronome, i would get better results and faster. Also sleeping helps I've noticed. What seemed so hard the first day of practice gets easy after a good night sleep. It even surprised me how much it helped. So to answer your question. I play around 1 hour/day depending on if it's weekend or not. I play 3 hours/day on weekends. And I take guitar lessons 4 hours/week. Regular practice is key - the amount you practice is up to you. 1 hour a day is better than 5 hours every friday, getting a regular and structured practice regime together is one of the things that we are keen on at GMC - Kris even has a video on it - here, its well worth a look. Also, practicing techniques to a metronome is very important if you want to develop speed and consistency - there is a lesson here. In the end, how much you practice depends on motivation, and time available - a lot of us work, and manage maybe an hour a night, perhaps more at weekends. Some of us are students and have more free time and practice as much as 8 hours a day. One thing is for sure, as long as you are practicing the right things in the right way, the more you practice, the better you will get. One last thing, if you practice too much and it starts to hurt, then STOP! You can damage your hands if you play through the pain - a couple of people on the sight, including Sean our newest instructor have stories about this, so if it hurts, take a rest!
